Today, April 10, the grand opening of the International School for the Treatment of Congenital Heart Diseases took place.
Leading American experts in pediatric cardiac surgery and cardiology have come to the Kaliningrad Center for High Medical Technologies to share the latest advances in pediatric cardiac surgery, cardiology and postoperative care with their Russian colleagues. This visit is the fourth within the framework of cooperation between the Center and the International Medical Alliance “HearttoHeart”, known in Russia for more than 20 years.
The theme of the International School in 2017 is the treatment of congenital heart disease – Ebstein anomalies. Such a large-scale thematic school is unique for Russian pediatric cardiac surgery. Ebstein’s anomaly is an extremely rare, but very complex congenital pathology, which periodically occurs in children of the Kaliningrad region. At the same time, this defect requires accurate diagnosis, complex and verified surgical intervention.
Patients with this disease have an abnormally formed right ventricle and tricuspid valve.
The severity of the defect may vary from patient to patient; symptoms may appear at various times in their lives. Some have symptoms at birth; such patients require surgical treatment already in the neonatal period. However, many with Ebstein’s anomaly can go many years without surgery without experiencing problems such as heart failure, arrhythmias, or cyanosis. Timely and accurate diagnosis of the disease ensures that surgical treatment will be carried out at the right time. With the help of the operation, it is possible to restore or prosthetize the abnormal valve and improve the patient’s quality of life. However, because the defect is rare, few surgeons are experienced in the surgical treatment of Ebstein’s anomaly.
One such surgeon is Dr. Joseph Derani, Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. The surgeons of this clinic have been performing surgical treatment of patients with Ebstein’s anomaly since 1972.
Joseph Derani, as well as a number of well-known American specialists representing the team of the From Heart to Heart alliance, will give lectures, master classes, clinical training on such topics as: making a diagnosis; approaches to making a decision on surgical intervention; care of patients in the intensive care unit in the postoperative period, as well as postoperative treatment and observation of patients.
American doctors, together with Russian colleagues, will examine about 30 patients with Ebstein’s anomaly. In addition to Kaliningrad children, patients with this pathology from other regions of our country – Ufa, Kazan, Rostov, Ulyanovsk, Volgograd – specially arrived at the Center for High Medical Technologies for examination consultations and possible surgical treatment.
More than 60 doctors from many Russian clinics: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Rostov-on-Don and others became participants of the International School.
