They often work with preschool teachers and teacher assistants to teach children through a structured curriculum. They prepare daily and long-term schedules of activities to stimulate and educate the children in their care. They also monitor and keep records of the children’s progress.
Family childcare providers care for children in the providers’ own homes during traditional working hours. They need to ensure that their homes and all staff they employ meet the regulations for family childcare providers. They perform tasks related to running their business, such as writing contracts that set rates of pay, when payment can be expected, and the number of hours children can be in care. Furthermore, they establish policies including those regarding whether sick children can be in their care, who can pick children up, and how behavioral issues will be dealt with. Family childcare providers may spend some of their time marketing their services to prospective families.
Nannies work in the homes of the children they care for and the parents that employ them. Most often, they work full time for one family. They may be responsible for driving children to school, appointments, or afterschool activities. Some live in the homes of the families that employ them.
Childcare workers hold about 992,400 jobs. The largest employers of childcare workers are as follows:
Child day care services | 28% |
Self-employed workers | 23% |
Private households | 20% |
Elementary and secondary schools; local | 9% |
Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional, and similar organizations | 8% |
Family childcare workers care for children in their own homes. They may convert a portion of their living space into a dedicated space for the children. Nannies usually work in their employers’ homes.
Many states limit the number of children that each staff member is responsible for by regulating the ratio of staff to children. The ratios vary with the age of the children. Childcare workers are responsible for a relatively few number of babies and toddlers. However, workers can be responsible for greater numbers of older children.
Childcare Work Schedules
Childcare workers’ schedules vary, and part-time work is common.
Childcare centers usually are open year round, with long hours so that parents or guardians can drop off and pick up their children before and after work. Some centers employ full-time and part-time staff with staggered shifts to cover the entire day.
Family childcare providers may work long or irregular hours to fit parents’ work schedules. In some cases, these childcare providers offer evening and overnight care to meet the needs of families. After the children go home, family childcare providers often have more responsibilities, such as shopping for food or supplies, keeping records, and cleaning.
Nannies work either full or part time. Full-time nannies may work more than 40 hours a week to cover parents’ time commuting to and from work.

Education and training requirements vary by setting, state, and employer. They range from no formal education to a certification in early childhood education.

Education for Childcare Workers
Childcare workers must meet education and training requirements, which vary by state. Some states require these workers to have a high school diploma or equivalent, but many states do not have any education requirements for entry-level positions. However, workers with postsecondary education or an early childhood education credential may be qualified for higher level positions.
Employers often prefer to hire workers with at least a high school diploma and, in some cases, postsecondary education in early childhood education.
Workers in Head Start programs must at least be enrolled in a program in which they will earn a postsecondary degree in early childhood education or a child development credential.
States do not regulate educational requirements for nannies. However, some employers may prefer to hire workers with at least some formal instruction in childhood education or a related field, particularly when they will be hired as full-time nannies.
Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations for Childcare Workers
Many states require childcare centers, including those in private homes, to be licensed. To qualify for licensure, staff must pass a background check, have a complete record of immunizations, and meet a minimum training requirement. Some states require staff to have certifications in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.
Some states and employers require childcare workers to have a nationally recognized credential. Most often, states require the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential offered by the Council for Professional Recognition. Obtaining the CDA credential requires coursework, experience in the field, and a period during which the applicant is observed while working with children. The CDA credential is valid for 3 years and requires renewal.
The National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) offers a nationally recognized accreditation for family childcare providers. This accreditation requires training and experience in the field, as well as a period during which the applicant is observed while working with children.
Childcare Worker Training
Many states and employers require providers to complete some training before beginning work. Also, many states require staff in childcare centers to complete a minimum number of hours of training annually. Training may include information about basic care of babies, such as how to warm a bottle, and customer-service skills.
Advancement for Childcare Workers
Childcare workers may advance to become a preschool or childcare center director with a couple years of experience and a bachelor’s degree.
Important Qualities for Childcare Workers
Communication skills. Childcare workers must be able to talk with parents and colleagues about the progress of the children in their care. They need good speaking skills to provide this information effectively and good listening skills to understand parents’ instructions.
Decisionmaking skills. Good judgment is necessary for childcare workers so they can respond to emergencies or difficult situations.
Instructional skills. Childcare workers need to be able to explain things in terms young children can understand.
Interpersonal skills. Childcare workers need to work well with people in order to develop good relationships with parents, children, and colleagues.
Patience. Working with children can be frustrating, so childcare workers need to be able to respond calmly to overwhelming and difficult situations.
Physical stamina. Working with children can be physically taxing, so childcare workers should have a lot of energy.
The median hourly wage for childcare workers is $13.22. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $8.91, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $17.99.
The median hourly wages for childcare workers in the top industries in which they work are as follows:
Elementary and secondary schools; local | $14.35 |
Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional, and similar organizations | $12.93 |
Child day care services | $11. 43 |
Pay varies with the worker’s education and work setting. Those in formal childcare settings and those with more education usually earn higher wages. Pay for self-employed workers is based on the number of hours they work and the number and ages of the children in their care.
Childcare workers’ schedules vary, and part-time work is common.
Childcare centers usually are open year round, with long hours so that parents or guardians can drop off and pick up their children before and after work. Some centers employ full-time and part-time staff with staggered shifts to cover the entire day.
Family childcare providers may work long or unusual hours in order to fit parents’ work schedules. In some cases, these childcare providers may offer evening and overnight care to meet the needs of families. After the children go home, childcare providers often have more responsibilities, such as shopping for food or supplies, doing accounting, keeping records, and cleaning.
Nannies may work either full or part time. Full-time nannies may work more than 40 hours a week to give parents enough time to commute to and from work.
About 150,300 openings for childcare workers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
Employment of Childcare Workers
Much of the projected employment growth in this occupation is due to recovery from the COVID-19 recession that began in 2020.
Parents or guardians who work will continue to need the assistance of childcare workers. In addition, the demand for preschools and childcare facilities, and consequently childcare workers, should remain strong because early childhood education is widely recognized as important for a child’s intellectual and emotional development. However, the increasing cost of childcare may limit demand for childcare workers.

Careers in the child care industry
With American parents working harder than ever to make ends meet, it’s imperative for families to have access to qualified child care providers they can trust. In order to fill these positions, many people pursue degrees in child care, which help them learn how to properly take care of children, as well as run child care facilities.
Types of child care degrees
Child development degree programs prepare students for a number of positions in the industry, including careers in education, social services, and government. Students who earn bachelor’s degrees in child care typically pursue entry-level positions, while those who want to enter administration, supervisory, or research positions are generally required to obtain master’s or doctoral degrees.
Similarly, child care management degrees are for those interested in not only working with children, but running child care facilities. In these programs, students explore topics such as business accounting, marketing, parenting, child development, nutrition, child safety, and first aid in order to give them the knowledge and skills they to manage a child care facility. Graduates can pursue a number of careers, including daycare manager, preschool teacher, or child care worker.
Careers in child care
Child care worker – Child care workers are responsible for the basic needs of the children in their care. The duties of these professionals include preparing meals and snacks for children, changing diapers, ensuring that children maintain good hygiene, and determining when they should exercise or take naps. In addition, child care workers are responsible for engaging children in educational activities, monitoring their emotional and developmental progress, reporting any abnormal behavior to the parents, and helping children develop their interests.
There are a number of different kinds of child care workers, including family care providers, nannies, and babysitters. These professionals work in several settings, including families’ home, preschools, public schools, and child care centers. The education requirements of child care workers depend on where they seek employment. While some in the field can get a job with a high school diploma, many workers are required to obtain at least an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. In addition, some states require that child care workers earn a certification to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Also, these professionals may be required to be certified in CPR or first aid, depending on the requirements of their employer.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of child care workers is expected to increase by 2 percent nationwide between 2019 and 2029.
Preschool teacher – Preschool teachers work with children, generally between the ages of three and five, to introduce different subjects to them — such as science, reading, and writing — that they will learn when they go to kindergarten. In addition, these professionals organize daily activities for their students so they have periods to learn, play, and rest. Preschool teachers are also required to plan and develop a curriculum for their students that monitors their motor, language, and social skills; inform parents when there are signs of emotional or developmental problems with their children; and keep records of how students are progressing in class. Preschool teachers work in a variety of settings, including charitable and religious organizations, as well as public and private schools.
Those who want to pursue a career as a preschool teacher are generally required to earn at least a bachelor’s degree, although some employers will hire workers with just a high school diploma. In addition, some states require preschool teachers to earn national certifications, such as the Child Development Associate (CDA) or the Child Care Professional (CCP).
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there will be a 2 percent increase in the amount of jobs available for preschool teachers in the United States between 2019 and 2029.
Preschool or child care center director – Preschool and child care center directors are responsible for completely running their respective child care programs. Duties of these professionals include hiring, training, and supervising staff; creating budgets and ensuring those budgets are adhered to; developing policies for their facilities and communicating them to parents and staff; and ensuring that the facility is in compliance with state laws.
Preschool and child care center directors generally earn at least a bachelor’s degree. In addition, depending on what state they live in, they may be required to obtain a license, as well as various professional certifications. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for these professionals is expected to grow by 1 percent nationally between 2019 and 2029.

Babysitting career | ||||
Level | Name | Description per week | Uniform
1 | Amateur nanny | Not everyone can withstand children’s whims and crying. Non-professional nannies think that children just need a little care. But what if you need to keep up with two children at once? Stock up on baby bottles and toys for an unforgettable adventure! | $100
2 | Caring Heart | Caring for children requires some skill, and the more you are trusted, the better you need to work. Another family wants to ask you to look after the baby. This means that you have to take care of three children at once! | 200 $
3 | Care machine | What a fuss – such a profession is not taught in school. You should probably buy more toys and start developing new skills in toddlers. Now you take care of four children at the same time, and their parents may well ask you to work on weekends too!
Congratulations, you have gained access to your new uniform! In addition, now you are able to tell fairy tales to children. Parents can even thank you with a gift for a job well done! |
$300 | |
4 | Skillful caretaker | You have survived several kids, but can you take care of schoolchildren? You will have to adopt a couple of strict parenting techniques so that the children do their homework. So, are you ready to take on five kids, work weekends, and work with schoolchildren?
Congratulations, you have gained access to your new uniform! Thanks to your professional experience, you can now invite the children to go play. |
$400 | |
5 | Master of Education | Are you ready to give up some of the joys of life? Teachers of this level do not have much free time. Now you will take care of six children, work on weekends, take care of schoolchildren and sometimes difficult children. Congratulations, you have made great progress!
You have reached the highest level in childcare. You already know that children are happiness, and you know how to reprimand a child. For your outstanding service, you get a personal van! |
$500 |
A feature of the nanny career is that you can work at home, that is, you do not need to waste fuel or run on a winter morning along a slippery road for a bus. And since you are going to arrange a kindergarten at home, you should take care of a suitable room. It is best if it is a spacious room not far from the front door, since parents do not bother to take their children to the room intended for them, but leave the children right in the hallway. Sometimes they can leave the kids in front of the door without even bringing them into the house. It is not recommended to use rooms in the upper floors or in the basement (that is, where the stairs lead), otherwise the children themselves will not be able to crawl to the toys and they will have to be carried one at a time, which takes time. And you will have time … that is, you will not have it at all. So do not forget to visit the restroom before the start of the working day and eat properly – the day is going to be difficult!
So that the kids do not get bored in your kindergarten, it is recommended to place as many toys as possible from the section for children, children’s books, if desired, a feeding chair (although you can do without it!), a pot. Additional objects from the Store will decorate the room even better and the kids will feel at home! Do not forget to build a playground on the site, because soon you are expecting schoolchildren, and they will not play with teddy bears and cars.
You can put a stereo system in the room and turn on children’s music. The TV will also give you a few free minutes when the kids watch the Detsky Mir TV channel.
But now everything is ready. You woke up, got dressed, had breakfast, lunch, dinner and are expecting babies. The clock struck 09. 00 and immediately the doorbell rang – your working day has begun, as the pop-up message reminds you. Also during working hours, in map mode, you can see that now is not the time to chill – work is calling.
As an amateur nanny, you will be left in the care of two babies. Your task is to cheer up the kids, cheer them up and, of course, satisfy all their little needs. Surely the parents did not even feed the kids, but simply threw them into the kindergarten and left on their own business. (Judging by the uniform of one of the mothers, the parents are really busy with work that they simply cannot do without your help!)
You can find out the needs and mood of the children by the pop-up window if you hover over the baby.
As you can see in the image, there are five “states” of needs and moods. The first phrase tells us about the mood of the baby, and the second about his needs.
Condition | Examples |
Excellent |
|
Good |
|
Satisfactory |
|
Poor |
|
Terrible |
|
If you want to succeed in your career, then it is recommended to achieve a “pink” combination – which means that the baby is dry, he is fed, drunk and having fun with might and main! Categorically avoid the “red” combination.
The most stressful working time will be in the morning, because all the kids are in a bad mood and you need to get it up as soon as possible, but once you cope with this task, things will go easier. From time to time, observe the desires of the baby and satisfy them. Bottle feed your babies, change their diapers, play the xylophone or the blocks with them. Scare the kids with clawed paws, throw them up, tickle them (how is this word spelled correctly …).
If you have a minute or two of free time, read books with the kids or play a performance with teddy bears. You can teach toddlers to walk, talk, or use the potty, but all this will not affect your career progression.
At the end of the working day, you will receive a report on the work done. And if all the kids are happy and happy, then you have nothing to worry about! But if you showed insufficient attention or forgot to feed the children, then do not expect a high salary. You didn’t deserve it!
By fulfilling your duties of caring for children, you will gradually increase your career growth so that you will be offered to become a “Caring Heart”. At this second career level, you will get another baby under your care – now you have to take care of three children. And if you coped with two “with one left”, now you will have a hard time. If you are not coping with your duties, then there is nothing wrong with that, just call your household members for help, who will willingly share the care of the baby with you.
In a babysitting career, you need to be prepared for anything, even the fact that parents can not always pick up their children on time. Sometimes they may ask you to keep an eye on their children while they finish their quarterly report or are stuck in traffic. Of course, you will be paid for this work.
At the third level of your career, you will have more worries, because now you are looking after four babies! In addition, parents who are crazed from children or work may ask you to sit with their offspring on the weekends while they go to the theater. But if someone called you with such a request, then be sure that the news will spread throughout the town and other parents will certainly call you with the same request. The day in this case will be marked as a working day, the working time will be as usual from 09.00 to 19.00.
From time to time, grateful parents will send you gifts. The salary is, of course, a good thing, but gifts warm the soul so much!
Also now you can tell fairy tales to children. To do this, click on the character and select the desired action. The nanny will find a spacious corner and call all the children who, after looking up from their studies, will come and crawl to listen to fairy tales about pirates, queens and wizards. (The Tell a Story action stays with you for life, even if you change careers or retire.)
Having reached the title of “Skillful guardian” you take care of five children – a junior schoolboy will be added to the kids. But since schoolchildren need to attend school, he will come to your kindergarten only after three in the afternoon, when classes at school are over. To this you must also add the road to your garden, so it may well be that you will see it only at four o’clock. Schoolchildren also have their own needs – fun, hunger (it’s good that they themselves can visit the restroom), and besides, they need to prepare homework, in which you can be useful to them, as soon as you choose the appropriate action. Homework is completed much faster than your own children, and then you can invite the child to “Go play” so that he has a little fun. This is where the playground comes in handy, the child himself will go to swing on a swing, play in the sand, a tree house or splash on a water slide.
And now you have reached perfection, that is, the highest level in the career of a nanny – you have become a Master of education! The reward will not keep you waiting, it is already in your family luggage – you get a personal painted van!
Now you have six children, toddlers and younger schoolchildren in your care. But having reached the top of your career, do not think that now you can do everything. A “difficult child” may be added to your wards. You will be notified in advance of his arrival, so get ready.
You will recognize a difficult child by the message in the window. Such a child loves to break objects, frown and oppose education in every possible way, but you really try. You can “Reprimand the child” after his pranks or just “Talk about problems”. Try to make the child trust you, make friends with him.
When attending your kindergarten, children grow up very quickly, which you can observe on the dating panel. Here the baby wears diapers, then attends first grade, and now he has grown up and became a sweet and obedient teenager. If you managed to raise such a child, be proud, then your work was not in vain!
True, not everything is so rosy. If you begin to neglect your duties, do not feed, do not water babies, mistreat children, skip work, then do not expect positive feedback. (For these troubles, I couldn’t take my character, he’s a good one, but I chose Christopher Steele from Sunset Valley.)
When you receive such or similar feedback from your parents, think about it, reconsider your attitude to work. After all, if you urgently need to leave the city, then you can, as usual, take a vacation for one, three or five days. But if you’re just being lazy, the next step is to have a social worker come to you. You don’t think that social services will turn a blind eye to your attitude towards children, do you?
The arrival of a social worker is accompanied by your removal from the case, your license will be taken away. Without it, you will not be able to babysit until you restore your reputation, that is, until you visit the “Childcare Penalty Class” in the town hall, which costs 1,000 Simoleons.
By the way, every working day, until you visit the penalty class, you will receive a reminder.
When you successfully complete a rehabilitation course, learn to be smart and feel responsible for your children, you can open your kindergarten again.
So be careful, conscientiously fulfill your duties and do not bring the case to court.
To make your garden look prettier, the Sims can draw portraits of the kids or hang pictures of them around the room so they don’t forget their wards. Raise children and shape personalities! Good luck to you!

A quarter of a millennium to gender equality.
Why it is more difficult for women to build a career
It is difficult for women to become successful in a man’s world. On the way to success, they are pressured by stereotypes about the “weaker sex”, imposed self-doubt, “glass ceiling”. If they decide to start a family, then the burden of household duties. PhD in Economics, Professor and Director of the Center for Economic Research and Development of the Russian Economic School Natalya Volchkova told Utopia how to equalize the chances of men and women in management and in the market.
First, let’s define what is gender inequality in the economy? How does it manifest itself?
Economic gender inequality has several definitions. The most basic are inequality in participation in the labor market and inequality in wages. The first comes from the fact that women and men are equal in the world, but at the same time, women are less represented in the workplace. Similarly, in wages – a difference of 30% with equal professional characteristics, without correction for hours of work, experience, education. There are other indicators, such as the time women spend on unpaid work, housework and childcare.
How many jobs are held by women?
On average, women hold 37% of all jobs in the world. In the countries of the Middle East and in India, the percentage falls below twenty. In the countries of Eastern and Western Europe and in China it rises above forty.
The well-known research McKinsey shows that if gender inequality is eliminated, then in ten years, world GDP could increase by 28 trillion dollars, or by 26%. Moreover, even if the gap is not eliminated, but at least reduced, this will in any case lead to a tangible increase in GDP. Why does the gap still exist?
First, who should fight him? This is not an easy story both in execution and in terms of resources. The eradication of gender inequality does not have many stakeholders – not even all women want it.
Second, even if equality ultimately brings economic benefits, it can be very expensive to get there. Funds are needed to bring women and men equally into the labor market, to pay them equally, to provide equal opportunities for childcare and the availability of kindergartens.
In Russia, it is now difficult to get inexpensive and full-fledged child care – access to babysitting services and kindergartens – therefore, predominantly women take maternity leave and stay at home with the child. This pushes them out of the labor market and career ladder.
To put it bluntly, is the state sacrificing the benefits of the women’s labor force in order not to spend money on fighting inequality?
The role of the state in this process, of course, is – both funds are needed, and a certain rhetoric of the state as a regulator of the acceleration of movement. But world practice shows that now the leading role in this is played by business. He began to understand the benefits of women’s equal participation in both the workforce and consumption. From a consumption standpoint, the story is more clear—women make the majority of purchase decisions. Those who create products and services without considering women are losing income.
Women in 94% of cases choose furniture, in 92% – the direction and method of travel, in 91% – real estate, in 60% – a car and in 51% – electronics.
So the business is investing in the development of women’s career prospects so that women can spend money on products and services?
Yes, a woman is also a consumer, and business understands this. In addition, the labor market for managerial talent is quite limited. There are no studies showing that women are less talented than men. Therefore, if fewer women are represented in the labor market, this means that business does not use their potential. Creating conditions that are no worse than those of men leads to the fact that a more talented team manages the business.
In Russia, management positions are dominated by men, but 40% of small businesses belong to women. Can this be considered a good sign?
Yes, but this will not help to improve the situation as a whole, because in order for someone to be invited to leadership positions in large and medium-sized businesses, you need relevant experience.
Are there areas in which it is profitable to underpay women and not hire them?
I have not heard of such studies. Even when women are bottled into sectors of the economy traditionally represented by men, they show quite successful results.
But what about the list of prohibited professions, consisting of hundreds of items?
It really exists, but it is not known how adequate it is in the face of changing technologies. Some of the points there are very clumsy, because women can also perform physical labor, but the decision to introduce such prohibitions was made by men. The roots of this go far back when the industry was a zone of great burdens and long distances. Now everything is so automated that it no longer requires such heavy loads, but the approach to prohibitions remains at the same level.
Most of the currently banned professions are not hard physical labor, but work with chemicals that are equally harmful to both men and women. As far as I understand, women are banned so as not to harm the reproductive system
I would let women decide what to do with their bodies. I think they are able to take care of themselves, their health and decide what they need and what they want. I see no reason to close their access to the chemical industry. The list of prohibited professions is a confirmation of the opinion that a woman is not able to make an adequate decision herself.
The USSR gave women almost equal access to the labor market, because there were not enough workers to build a new socialist world. Was it a good experience? And was there really equality in it?
Yes, women were given jobs, but sometimes the empowerment took radical forms. Women who wanted to stay at home with their children could not do this – they were immediately referred to as parasites. They were required to enter the labor market after a rather short maternity leave, and the situation with kindergartens in the country was very difficult.
Also, women were still denied access to managerial positions and important decision-making. During Soviet history, there were only three women at the top of the Central Committee of the CPSU. Despite this, the gender policy of the USSR to provide women with jobs led to an economic breakthrough, and this scheme was used by other countries, including capitalist ones: the USA, Europe, Scandinavia.
“Utopia” investigated the number of women in power already in modern Russia and found out , which is only 20.5% on average in the country. Transparency International showed that the majority of the lower-level officials are women. That is, the higher the position, the fewer women. Why is this happening?
This happens everywhere, in all countries of the world. This is a question of women’s career growth – “glass ceiling” and “leaky pipe”. There may be more women than men at the entrance, but the higher the rung of the career ladder, the fewer women there are, both in government institutions and in business.
This is one of the reasons why businesses in a competitive environment are interested in advancing women in this career. There are more talents, and this helps to win the competition. Companies need to break down stereotypes and informal mechanisms that make women’s careers less successful than men’s.
Is quota included in the concept of equal working conditions?
The Swedish experience shows that after the introduction of quotas for women in the leadership of the country, it was precisely the effect of talents that worked – both the quality of laws and the level of politics increased. Talented women have simply replaced average men. At the same time, it is clear that any mechanism can be spoiled by corruption and lack of transparency, for example, they will take their wives, sisters, daughters and mistresses to preferential places. We need good mechanisms that would allow women to take positions based on their abilities, and not on acquaintances or kinship with men.
Opponents of women’s quotas say they will lead to economic decline because less qualified workers will get jobs just because of their gender. Does this argument have a right to exist?
Why less qualified? The point of the quotas is to equalize the opportunities for women to get high positions corresponding to their qualifications, and to equalize the likelihood that they will actually get them.
Why can women have less opportunities than men with equal professional qualities?
There is an old boys’ club problem. For example, if it is necessary to replace a member of the board of directors, the rest begin to look among their friends and acquaintances from the business sphere. This is logical – you can’t take a man off the street, but the problem is that men’s informal business communication takes place in those circumstances from which women are traditionally excluded (on golf courses, in baths, country clubs, on fishing, sports matches). Therefore, the sample usually consists of men.
Also, the likelihood of career growth depends on the gender of the boss: a woman is less likely to get a high position with a man leader. When we analyzed why this happens, we found out that one of the factors is spending time together “in the smoking room” with your boss, a kind of team building. The business that understands this is trying to build gender-neutral relationships in the team.
Which countries are currently closest to achieving gender equality?
There is an index of the World Economic Forum, it has four components: participation of women in the labor market, life expectancy, education and managerial positions in the state. According to these indicators, the Scandinavian countries are more advanced. In Russia, the situation in education is above average, the situation in the labor market is not the worst, and in terms of life expectancy, Russia generally belongs to the top 30 – Russian women have a much higher life expectancy than men.
The same World Economic Forum calculated that the pandemic has delayed gender equality by another 136 years. Will this happen with every crisis? Why are women’s rights more affected by crises?
Because when unemployment rises, men fill open vacancies faster than women, and not only in specifically male areas. This happens, among other things, because women evaluate themselves worse because of the message that society has been broadcasting to them since childhood.
The specificity of the coronacrisis is that the sectors most affected this time are personal services, in which women are represented in the majority. In addition, children, adults, and kindergartens have gone remote – this has increased the burden on women in terms of unpaid domestic work. Also, due to the fact that people were locked up with each other, the level of domestic violence has increased, also to a greater extent against women. And finally, migrants who left to work in other countries returned home and forced women out of their positions.
Suppose there is not a crisis, but technological progress, and jobs will be occupied by robots and artificial intelligence. Will this also hit women harder?
Yes, there are such concerns. This is due to the fact that in areas of education called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), on average, gender inequality is also not in favor of women, although they are more likely to receive higher education. That is, in a field that will have more weight during the technological revolution, women are less represented, and therefore less likely to benefit from this revolution.
But technological progress is objectively good for mankind, and it would not be very desirable to avoid it for the sake of gender equality. How to equalize positions in this area?
Eliminate stereotypes that are imposed on girls early in life and lead to unequal distribution, with more women in the humanitarian sectors and more men in technology.
Is it possible to equalize men and women in a natural way without introducing quotas and changing the rhetoric of the state?
Gender inequality is due to so many social and historical reasons that it is almost impossible to eradicate it naturally. The same McKinsey study says that if nothing is done, gender inequality will disappear in 250 years. And during this time we will suffer colossal economic losses that can be avoided.
Child and work: a quest for progress
The most effective advice about working at home in the presence of small children comes down to attracting external resources: nannies, relatives, kindergartens. But in this article we will talk about how to cope without helpers.
Probably, there is no such working mother who is not tormented by this question. In my experience, working from home provokes this internal role conflict with a vengeance. On the one hand, the fear of not being able to do the job, not being able to complete all the tasks because of the child, and on the other hand, the fear that the son or daughter does not receive maternal attention and care.
Unfortunately, there is a strong opinion among applicants that a mother is persona non grata in the labor market. In fact, no, cases of discrimination are rare, and 67% of employers are waiting for the return of their employees from parental leave.
“Of course, not all young mothers are ready to immediately join full-time employment, such specialists can work remotely, work with a free or shift schedule, part-time work, project work. There are a lot of similar vacancies on hh.ru, you can see them by setting the necessary filters during the selection.
At the same time, a mother can stay at her main place of work on parental leave for up to three years and work part-time somewhere else or work part-time while retaining her right to receive child care benefits.
Plus, remember your rights in accordance with the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, for example, young mothers are entitled to additional breaks for breastfeeding or, if a woman cannot perform her previous job, the employer is obliged to transfer her to another, with payment not lower than the average salary for the previous one. work (Article 254 of the Labor Code).
Another thing that worries the employer when it comes to hiring a woman after the decree is the obsolescence of her knowledge. If for some professions, like cycling, it is enough to learn once and you can continue to work quietly, then most require constant involvement and the need to keep both hands on the pulse of change. But this does not mean at all that a woman needs to immediately run from the hospital to work in order not to lose her qualifications. For a year and a half, you can definitely completely immerse yourself in the joys of motherhood, since our world is not so dynamic that your qualifications will be reset in a year. But then it’s worth supporting the expertise with the help of additional education, reading specialized literature, project work – all this will later help convince the employer of the relevance of your knowledge.
In any case, if you have the slightest doubt about discrimination based on the presence of small children, you should contact lawyers, for example, by calling the hotline of Rostrud or the Labor Inspectorate. ”

Most often, a woman is a hostage of mindsets, and she reduces her ambitions, is too worried about public opinion and is very afraid of losing her job. All this increases anxiety, leads to mistakes, the blame for which can be transferred to the “bad” boss or, which is especially bad, to the child. But if you have already been accepted into the company, it means that the employer needs your professional skills and is not embarrassed by the fact that you have children.
“When a woman with a small child is looking for a job, in fact, the main thing that worries the future employer is what the employee will do if the child is sick. Considering that there are many mothers, and few qualified specialists, one should not be afraid of job refusals solely because of the presence of children. It is enough to discuss with the employer at the interview how you plan to organize your working day in case of frequent illnesses of the child, how you have resolved the issue with nannies / grandmothers / kindergartens, etc. Thus, you will remove his doubts and emphasize the seriousness of your mood.

During the pandemic, our consciousness has changed, including our attitude to work and work interactions. Many of your colleagues probably have children, and everyone is already used to their unexpected appearances in the frame and in most cases they are sympathetic. Many employers have introduced flexible scheduling for telecommuters with the promise that employees have time to do urgent family or personal matters during the day, of course, expecting the employee to find time to complete office tasks.
Often, along with the experience of a working mother that she does not meet the standard of an exemplary employee, there is a feeling of guilt that a child / children have to be entertained with computer games and cartoons. What to do?
First, forgive yourself. Take an example from Elon Musk’s mother, who in her interviews says that she always worked hard and did not worry about it. In addition, scientists from Harvard found that the happiness of children does not depend on how busy the mother is.
To a large extent, guilt lives only within us and is conditioned by social stereotypes. Despite the fact that busy mothers have long been a trend in large cities, our psyche is very passive in its restructuring.
Secondly, let’s be honest, most likely, even without your work, the child would still be sitting on a tablet – this is already an integral part of modern life. In addition, there is a lot of educational content on the Internet, and if you approach its selection carefully, then the time spent by a child on a gadget may not be useless at all.
Forget multitasking.
Neuroscientists deny it, arguing that the brain is capable of keeping only one task in focus. When it seems to us that we are doing a lot, in reality we are wasting resources and doing less. As a result, anxiety rises and productivity drops even more.
Follow the principles of time management.
The simplest and most effective recommendations:
- Set yourself clear goals for the day and act strictly according to the plan. Let you have a minimum of tasks, but you will definitely complete them.
- Don’t forget about breaks, for example once an hour. You can use the already legendary “pomato method” – 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes of rest.
- Put your smartphone away and turn off all notifications except for work and vital ones. Every day we spend about 7 hours on the Web, most often being distracted from work by “time wasters” (social networks, off-topic conversations, online shopping). Switching to a smartphone is a false appearance of rest, much more effective is a warm-up or a short walk.
Believe in your child.
With a child over three years old, it is already possible to negotiate and develop norms of behavior in a playful way. For example, come up with a warning sign when mom should absolutely not be distracted. It can be a timer signal or a certain color ribbon on the door handle – whatever. Another option: take the child as a “partner”, “involve” him to work – write / draw / speak a list of tasks that he must complete while you are busy. This can be turned into a quest, as a result of which he will receive a small prize.
Delegate.
Another life hack is to team up with two or three working mothers and take turns looking after the children. Here both communication and socialization, besides, you can periodically exchange toys with friends – children will appreciate such a cycle.
Don’t forget about yourself.
Working mothers are especially prone to burnout, because by default the child takes attention even in the passive mode. And if, after business tasks, you immediately run to solve everyday problems, then you run the risk of quickly burning out. Therefore, it is very important to learn to find time for yourself, sometimes to get rid of household duties, not to be shy about asking for help from your family. It is enough to take the child after the completion of work and go for a short walk with him, and not rush to clean up the nursery.
Do not forget a simple truth: the behavior of children depends greatly on the condition of the mother. The more calm and confident you are, the less the child will interfere with your work. Remember the rule of the oxygen mask: first on yourself, then on the child.

Tatyana Kostenkova: Making a career, a woman protects her children
According to the Research Center of the Superjob portal, 42 percent of today’s youth turned out to be convinced careerists and only then parents. Is it really? Why do modern women tend to return to work without waiting for the end of the three-year parental leave? Is it true that a career and children are incompatible? The correspondent of “RG” interviewed famous and unknown mothers and concluded: the impossible is possible.
So far, most Russian mothers are timidly trying on the role of a careerist mother, reluctantly parting with the role of a stay-at-home mother. For example, the mother of five-year-old Varya and eight-year-old Masha, Natalya Kuleva, chief specialist in the advertising department of the largest telecommunications company, admits that she does not have the opportunity to think about a career.
“Only work,” she clarifies. A job and a career are completely different things.
At the same time, Natalia does not exclude the possibility of combining her career with raising children.
– Unfortunately and fortunately, it is possible, she says. – Unfortunately, because sometimes life leaves no other choice – just remember the famous film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears”, the heroine Alentova made an amazing career, being also a single mother. Another option for combining upbringing and career is happy when a woman has the opportunity for self-realization and when someone can help her. But this option is more theoretical, because children always remain the main responsibility of a woman.
The mother of 12-year-old Andrei Natalya Musikhina, an employee from Nizhny Tagil, is convinced that “children always need a mother.”
– When children are small, they tend to get sick very often, what career? If only sometime later, she suggests timidly.
This position is shared by 31 percent of our compatriots (data from the Superjob portal). Arguing that “no one can replace a mother for children,” Russians believe that careers and children are incompatible.
– A career in its literal sense, like steps up the stairs, is possible for me, probably, only when the children have already grown up, or at least went to school, – the mother of two-month-old Zhenya, journalist Maria Nabirkina, suggests.
According to sociologists, 22 percent of our fellow citizens support the idea of climbing the career ladder after the birth of a child.
– Freelance work is possible, but it’s not a career anymore, continues Maria. – In general, it all depends on the mother, on her vision of life and relationships with the child. And by the way, the fact that a mother goes to work, a successful career in the presence of a baby does not mean at all that a mother is bad. It’s just that some people are good and some aren’t.
One third of the Russian mothers surveyed believe that the opportunity to combine a career take-off with children depends on the woman herself and her environment.
– It all depends on the wishes of the mother and the scope of her activities, – the mother of seven-year-old Timofey, psychologist Larisa Sorokina, agrees with this. – Of course, if a woman is engaged in her own business, it is very difficult to find time for a child – business requires maximum return. But if the mother considers communication with the child important, she will definitely find an opportunity to carve out an hour or two. And it’s not at all a fact that non-working stay-at-home moms do more and better work with their children. How many times have you seen a picture on the playground: moms are chatting on a bench, and the kids are busy with themselves until someone hits the head with a shovel.
However, in practice, not all mothers succeed in carving out an hour or two for a child.
– It is very difficult to combine career and children, – admits the mother of 16-year-old Yuna, the famous circus aerialist Yulia Volkova My parents helped me. I left my daughter with my mother and went to rehearsal or work. Without help, you probably have to be Julius Caesar, then maybe something will work out.
– I am engaged in the construction of individual residential buildings, – says the mother of six-year-old Ira and nine-year-old Kirill Anna Ivanenko from Kaliningrad. – You can consider that I have made a career, given that I have no construction education. But to be honest, I do not manage to be in time on all fronts. You can combine a career and children, but somewhere there will definitely be punctures. Unfortunately, my family is “sagging”. And despite the fact that my business is going well, I’m thinking about quitting my job. And let the husband build houses.
Competently
Tatyana Kostenkova, mother of 3-year-old Vika and 11-year-old Dasha, is a tireless careerist. When the first daughter was eight months old, she entered the University of Manchester. At 32, she became vice president of a large international holding. Soon she will have to defend her PhD and diploma in Russia and Switzerland. Therefore, Tatyana, like no one else, knows the answer to the question: do children suffer from their mother’s career?
Just 30 years ago, young mothers were not particularly interested in career growth. They calmly sat at home, cooked borscht, and only in extreme need went to work, handing over the baby to a nursery.
Tatyana Kostenkova: The fact is that before a woman thought of herself only in the family. Of course, in that life there were nuances. For example, a husband could not live without borscht, no one ate in restaurants then, no one could afford an au pair either. But the woman understood that she had a reliable rear in the person of her husband, and if suddenly her husband decided to leave, she could contact the trade union committee. That is, there was a certain economic model of a woman’s life in society. Now it is collapsing, two-thirds of marriages are breaking up, and those who counted on this model are becoming socially unprotected. Alimony is clearly not something you can live on now. Therefore, in our time, it is economically wrong not to pursue a career.
The second thesis in favor of a career is personal growth. Remember the famous biblical quote “by childbearing a woman will be saved.” This was the main spiritual path of a woman. Now there is a change in the role of women in society. So far, a woman who chooses the old path is supported by everyone, but she herself is already striving for something else besides motherhood and housekeeping. We still have a patriarchal society – a man is still a breadwinner, so a woman who does not make a career is still comfortable with us. But every year, those who are fixated on only one aspect (on the family) will be looked at with great misunderstanding. This is a global trend.
Would you like to say that modern mothers are forced to turn into careerists?
Tatyana Kostenkova: It is obvious that today, apart from raising children, a mother needs something else. Please note: if earlier the wives of rich husbands sat at home and did nothing, now they invent something for themselves. Because society is already incomprehensible to the fact that they do nothing. These women begin publishing books, opening schools and teaching courses in the castles of England. For example, Daria Zhukova (wife of oligarch Roman Abramovich – Ed.). With that kind of money, you can definitely sit and do nothing, but she has an ambitious art project “Garage”. Or Nika Belotserkovskaya (married to businessman Boris Belotserkovsky – Ed. ), who publishes the Sobaka.ru magazine TimeOut, writes cookbooks, and teaches cooking courses in France.
But it’s one thing when you invent an occupation for yourself simply because your soul or society requires it, and another thing is to climb the career ladder with a three-month-old baby in your arms.
Tatyana Kostenkova: It’s very hard. It turned out that the traces of emancipation had more influence on the woman herself. Our women’s work of raising children is not delegated, it cannot be left to nannies. Repairing a faucet can be dumped on a plumber, but the formation of a child’s soul cannot be dumped on anyone. Therefore, it became much more difficult for us. If the male breadwinner comes home, takes off his shoes, puts his feet on the table and waits for dinner to be brought to him, then the female breadwinner quickly takes off her clothes, grabs the children, begins to teach them, love, kiss, and at the same time cooks, washes and cleans. At the same time, no one forces her, she strives to do it herself. For example, I believe that education and training is still on me.
What else, besides upbringing, does a careerist mom have strength for?
Tatyana Kostenkova: Of course, when you work, it becomes possible to shift a lot of obligations onto someone, to give everything that is not a pity. Grocery shopping, ironing, laundry. Keep for yourself what brings pleasure (I love to cook), and what cannot be given away at all – raising children. And here the amount of time spent with the child does not always affect the quality. Very often I met non-working mothers; However, I can not say that they are engaged in children. They run the household. So that the child does not interfere, they pour out pots for him, occupy him with a TV. Therefore, if the mother does not work and is immersed in everyday life, I do not see much benefit for the child.
How did you spend last Sunday, for example?
Tatyana Kostenkova: In the morning I went with my eldest daughter to the Titian exhibition, then we went to a cafe, had a heart-to-heart talk, went to a shop – we had a sort of joint shopping, I spent the afternoon with my little one. In the evening I tried to combine them. If I still had the usual Sunday duties – washing, ironing, I probably would not have been able to devote so much time to the children. I think a full two days is better than an incomplete week. As Steve Jobs said, “You need to work not 12 hours, but with your head.” Therefore, it does not matter how much time you spend with your child, what matters is the quality of the time spent. The task of a careerist is to bring results, the task of a good mother is to give the maximum to children.
So the children still don’t see you on weekdays?
Tatyana Kostenkova: I adhere to the well-known rule: “first a person works for a name, and then the name works for him.” If the first part of my career was “disappearing” at work, now I have already chosen a flexible schedule that allows me to watch my youngest daughter grow up and enjoy. Without material damage. I escaped from office slavery, now I don’t disappear at work from nine to nine, like all careerists. But to get away from this, it was necessary to work for 10 years.
So, our young people think correctly: career first, and children after?
Tatyana Kostenkova: I don’t think so, it’s just more difficult for my mother. If she did not have time to earn credibility at work before the birth of the child, she will have to sacrifice something. I didn’t have any assistants with my first child, we lived in a one-room apartment. But at work they made concessions to me, made a flexible schedule. When my daughter was eight months old, I entered the University of Manchester. It was distance education, but with sessions, study papers. It was very difficult, but I do not think that you need to work until the age of 30, and then have children. “Later” may or may not work. A career is a career, and children are happiness and joy.
Do you think your mother spent more time with you than you did with your children?
Tatyana Kostenkova: My mother sent me to a nursery when I was a year old.
