Back to Texas.

American Sniper

Back to Texas

I was still nervous about leaving the Navy, but the realization that we were launching Craft encouraged me. When the time came, I couldn’t wait any longer.

Above all, I was driving home. Was I in a hurry? I retired November 4th; On November 6, I was already trampling the Texas dust.

While I was building Craft International, my family was staying in San Diego, the kids were finishing their semester of school, and Taya was getting the house ready for sale. My wife expected to finish everything and pack in January, when we were supposed to reunite in Texas.

They came for Christmas. I missed her and the children terribly.

I dragged Taya to my parents’ room and asked, “What do you think about coming back alone? Leave the kids here.”

She doubted. There was a lot to do, and although she loved our children, but at the same time taking care of them and preparing the house for sale, it was extremely tiring.

I really liked that my son and daughter stayed with me. My parents have been very supportive by looking after their grandchildren during the middle of the week. On Friday nights I would pick up the kids and we’d have a “Daddy’s Vacation” for three or sometimes four days.

People somehow think that fathers are not able to have a good time in the company of their young children. I think this is nonsense. Damn it, I had as much fun as they did! We jumped on the trampoline and played ball for hours. We went to the zoo, played on the playground, watched movies. They helped me make a barbecue. All in all, we had a great time!

When my daughter was a baby, it took her a long time to recognize me as a loved one. But gradually she began to trust me, and then she got used to the fact that I was always there. And now her father was everything to her.

Of course, she wrapped it around her little finger from the very first day in this world.

I started teaching my son how to shoot at the age of two, first with a blowgun. My theory is that children are in danger because of curiosity – if it is not satisfied in time, you will cause serious problems. If you tell about everything in detail and instruct about safety from an early age, you can avoid serious problems.

My son has learned to respect guns. I told him that if he wanted to learn how to use a weapon, he should contact me. I love shooting more than anything in the world. He already has his own lever-cocked .22 (5.6 mm) rifle, and shoots it pretty well. His handgun skills are also impressive.

My daughter is still very young and she doesn’t show that much interest yet. I suspect it won’t be long, but in any case, weapons training will be mandatory for her until she gets asked out on dates… Which, by my calculations, will happen when she turns twenty.

Both children are already hunting with me. While their age does not yet allow for a long time ahead, I suspect that in the near future they will become experienced hunters.

Taya:

Chris and I talked a lot about what would happen if our children chose the military. Of course, we would not want them to be injured or something happened to them, but there are many positives in military service. We will both be proud of them, no matter what they do.

If my son decides to go to SEAL, I will ask him to seriously consider. I will say that he must prepare. I think it’s very hard for the family. If you go to war, it changes you, and you should also be prepared for this. I will advise him to sit down and discuss the essence of things with his father.

Sometimes I feel like I’m crying at the mere thought of him being in combat.

I think Chris has done enough for the country that one generation can miss it. But we will both be proud of our children, no matter what.

After settling in Texas, I became closer to my parents. Since I have been with them again, they have noticed that the wall I built around me during the war has begun to melt. My father thinks that I have begun to rediscover myself. He believes that the hidden sides of my nature will be revealed again, at least some of them.

“I don’t think you could have trained to kill for years,” he remarked, “and I suppose it will all disappear overnight.”
