Meet Blanca Flores! She is the Center Director at Murrieta KinderCare in California. Blanca attended Argosy University, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Education. She has been with KinderCare since 2007. Every day, Blanca enjoys helping children learn and discover their true potential. Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Before- and After-School Programs (5–12 Years)

You can count on us to provide reliable care for your school-ager while you’re
at work, with safe transportation from our center to your child’s school and
back! Whether your child wants to start a drama club, build a volcano, or
create a comic book, they will have a place to follow their dreams. Your child
will start and end the day with a whole lot of fun!

School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)

Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun. We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

Spanish

Spanish Adventures provides young learners with a foundation for later success with
the Spanish language. Music, games, children’s Spanish literature, and other tools give
children multiple opportunities to hear, practice, and see Spanish language to develop
vocabulary and conversation skills. Curriculum includes lessons on greetings, numbers,
colors, animals, family, body parts, and pets, as well as how to engage conversationally
during common scenarios at home, a restaurant, or at the zoo.

• Our family has used KinderCare’s services for almost seven years now and for two children. My older child has been attending since she was three months old, and now does the after school program. Since she’s been in kindergarten, I’ve seen how much KinderCare helped her reading, writing, and math skills. My youngest, who is 17 months old, loves it. Does my child need to be potty-trained?

Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest, we’ll discuss how to work together to encourage toilet learning.

Australia’s highest paid motorcycle racer, Team San Manuel rider Chad Reed can once again feel like the king of World Supercross.

Today we will have to make a choice, as in childhood: who we are for. For whites or for reds? With the season in mind, it’s time to join the party of white wine lovers.

The genre of our notes allows me to express my own opinion on the topic under discussion, which does not pretend to be complete or to be a boring ultimate truth. I proceed from the idea of ​​placing some beacons, fairways for you, indicating addresses and appearances even in those areas that, at first glance, do not seem to be topics and essentials. Yes, our notes are not about how to survive, but about how to enjoy. Rejoice and enjoy what Spain gives us, its winemakers and chefs. Enjoy without wasting time and effort. Today, in this vein, we will try to reveal the topic of white wines, so that you can not only drink your rice with seafood without even looking at the label of a bottle of white wine, but order something worthwhile and memorable. Together we will reflect on white wine in Spain, and I will also tell a few stories – quite happy and almost fabulous.

Introduction to the topic

Several decades ago, I walked around the Moscow Manege, where one of the first gastronomic exhibitions in the country was held. The Manege is located in such a place, and it was in such distant years, that there were many random people at the exhibition, not too well versed in the production of wine and products. There was also a category of citizens who were in a state of slight euphoria due to the sudden, but promising discovery for themselves that they pour absolutely free drinks at such exhibitions. “But for me, here’s a light and a little dark” – this is how people roughly formulated a request to pour wine. And rightly so – the terminology was borrowed from the beer lexicon, which was much closer and more understandable to our people. Since then, we have gone very far ahead and can afford to talk quite seriously about the white wine of Spain.

Many people think that red wine is such an older serious brother in the family, and white wine is a slightly infantile younger sister. In fact, such an opinion is not based on anything serious. It’s just from a lack of awareness. For example, if you ask a random person about the famous Georgian feasts, then red wine will be implied, although in Georgia almost 90 percent of the wine produced is white wine, and it is this that is mainly drunk at feasts and holidays. So many people imagine Spain as a country of red wine, but in reality this is no longer the case, white wine can also be considered the face of Spanish winemaking. In terms of quantity, it is the undisputed leader, and in terms of quality, we have questions about the white wine of Spain. But we will definitely find answers to some of them today.

Place in the international arena

In the segment of the best wines in the world, with such recognized leaders as Burgundy Chardonnay, German and Austrian Rieslings and French Sauvignon Blanc, other countries can only line up. That was the case with Spanish white dry wine until last year, when there was a bit of a sensation: Parker awarded the 1986 Castillo YGAY wine of the Marques de Murrieta bodegas a perfect score of 100 points. Well, to make it clear to a normal reader who has not sold his soul to the wine devil and alcoholic demons: this is approximately as if our Russian football team won the World Cup. That is, the success of the Spanish white wine was, as well as the Soviet and Russian national teams. But from success (of which we, of course, we’ll talk more) to the championship – a huge distance. Moreover, the wine is from a bodega in Rioja, which has already established itself as a producer of red wines. This wine is made like this: the grapes are harvested from the site of pago Capellania, planted in 1945 year. Grapes: 97 percent biura and 3 percent malvasia. The wine was aged 252 months in American oak barrels and 67 months in concrete tanks. In 2014, it was bottled and quietly awaited its sensational success. Luis Gutierrez (Robert Parker’s “nose and mouth” in Spain) said it was one of the best whites he had ever tasted. And this is not the only such story in Rioja: a real white wine revolution threatens to break out there. There is even talk of spinning off new D.O.s from the Rioja zone. for the production of white wines. But even now the potential of the viura variety is obvious. And, of course, after this success, ambitious white wine producers will try to gain a foothold in the international market. Good chances for wines from Somontano, Navarra, Galicia.

The role of white wine in Spain

With the exception of this outstanding wine from Rioja and some others, it must be admitted that so far the niche of Spanish white wines in the world market is strong middle wines, an excellent combination of price and quality, but no more. In the cards of an American or French star restaurant there will be, to put it mildly, not too many Spanish white still wines. The Spaniards themselves are not very worried about this, white wine producers feel great anyway. But they still produce few serious wines. Let’s try to understand the reasons for this.

This story is often attributed to the hot climate in Spain. Of course, this is one of the reasons why great white wine is not easy to make. It is hot during the day, stuffy at night, there is not enough acidity in the grapes, there is not enough rainfall. Making great whites is hard. It is necessary that several factors come together: the right microclimate, a well-chosen variety, the desire and ambition of the winemaker to make a great white. And here the second factor comes into play: for a long time, the Spaniards did not have such a desire. The fact is that, as I said, in the hot summer, Spaniards and tourists drink a huge amount of white wine. The current harvest of the sought-after bodegas is drunk before next year’s wine is made. Distributors sometimes just have nothing to sell. Why, in such a situation, think about great wine or about aging in oak for years, and in the cellar for decades? Wine is made in a completely different style. The best drink in hot summer is water. Therefore, it is no coincidence that many complain that Spanish beer and white wine are too, to put it more delicately, inexpressive and pale in taste. Of course, this is not an English ale and not a Bavarian heavy beer. Not French Viogniers or Sicilian Chardonnay. I repeat, winemakers did not strive for this, and many do not strive to this day. After all, the conveyor: circulation – sale – new circulation – sale, and so every year – this is the dream of a winemaker-merchant. But there are pleasant exceptions, and it’s time to tell our stories.

First story: Belondrade and Lurton. D.O. Rueda. Berdejo variety

Victor Hugo once said that God invented water, but man invented wine. But Didier Belondrade, a Frenchman by birth and a wine romantic, believes that the main thing is to guess with the variety and site, and then just let the grapes express themselves. Many people think that making white wine is easy, but this is deceptively simple. Delonrade tasted verdejo for the first time at 1993, when he was already an elderly man (42 years old) and for some reason immediately felt that he could make excellent wine from this variety. The estate now has 30 hectares in 19 different plots and makes two white wines from berdejo and one rosé from tempranillo.

These are basically the two main varieties for the D.O. Rueda, which is not yet the Atlantic, but it is no longer Castilla and Leon. But the philosophy of the economy is significantly different from the philosophy of most bodegas in this region. I will try to explain my thought: if you try Rueda for the first time, you will surely like it. Fresh, brittle, a taste so necessary in summer. Plus a very pleasant characteristic fruit variety. But after a couple of years, if you drink a lot and understand wine, you will notice: there are many brands and brands, but sometimes it seems that one big cooperative operates in Rueda. The wines in Rueda are different – mediocre, good and even very good, but in my opinion, they are all somewhat obsessed with similarity and a single style. But Belonrade says: “I didn’t want to make white wine, I wanted to make good wine. It is clear that my wine is white. But it is unlikely that they will order it when you just need young white wine to the table.” Belondrade’s style is a strict selection of ripe berries, aging for about a year in oak barrels. The farm started working at 19In 1994, in 1999, the team was joined by oenologist Marte Baquerizo, who studied in Madrid and Bordeaux, and underwent an internship with Christian Muex (Château Petrus). It was here that the efforts of the team, the grape variety and the microclimate of the zone were formed. Belondrade doesn’t make a lot of wine or chase huge profits. As he himself admits, he is a little sentimental and a little socialist in the sense that he does not want rapid growth and unnecessary risks for the business, but it is more important to keep close contact with his team and his client, be responsible for every harvest and be sure that there will always be money to pay employees salaries at the end of the month.

In any case, Didier Belondrade, his wife Bridget Lurton, his family and team manage to make an exemplary and stylish berdejo and still work, so to speak, as the locomotive of the zone and variety.

Our history is connected with the coincidence of the grape variety, the place of its birth and the people who believed in them. Didier Belonrade succeeded, but the first was Marques de Riscal. Until now, Spaniards of venerable age in the store are looking for a bottle of this wine with their eyes, because it was Marques de Riscal who opened “white” Spain for them. This more than successful bodega in Rioja searched for land and grape varieties, experimented with biura, chardonnay and riesling, but settled on berdejo in Rueda. They were not afraid to make a new wine under their big name and developed the project as Marques de Riscal, which turned out to be fully justified in this case.

In our second story, there are again three participants: first of all, the territory, the terroir D.O. Valdeorras in Galicia, secondly, the very famous Palacios family of winemakers, and, finally, the godello grape variety.

Galicia is located in the northwest of Spain, hanging over Portugal. The region for the Spaniards is synonymous with quality (seafood, meat, wine), but the beauty of Galicia is harsh. It is not easy to survive there and in difficult times people abandoned entire villages, migrating around the country in order to survive. Viticulture is also not easy, given the hilly terrain, fog, heavy rains that lead to diseases of the grapes, and frosts in winter. Many bodegas are still handcrafted the old fashioned way, producing 10,000 bottles or more. What kind of economy can there be with such tiny print runs and low prices? But slowly Galicia is developing. The commercial powerhouse is one of Galicia’s five D.O. subzones. Rias Baixas and the most famous Albariño variety, which has even managed to become international. But albariño has the same drawback as berdejo: it is a fresh, pleasant, fruity variety, but now winegrowers are afraid to experiment with the taste of wine, they do not want to risk sales by deceiving consumer expectations. Therefore, many wines from different bodegas are like twin brothers. And experts pin their hopes on another variety, godello, which at one time was almost forgotten.

José Palacias Remondo, winemaker from Rioja, had nine children. The most famous of them can be considered a star winemaker, who became Decanter’s Person of the Year in 2015, who made several legendary wines – Alvaro Palacios. And the youngest of the sons was Rafael Palacios, who also decided to connect his life with wine, studied in Bordeaux and Australia, and after studying and working in Australia in 1994 returned to his native bodega. During these years, Alvaro in Priorat began to make his Ermita, which would soon become one of the most famous wines in Spain, and Rafael creates Placet, a white wine from Rioja, fine and fresh, from biura based on local traditions, but taking into account Australian technologies, because it is there Raphael became particularly interested in white wines. He managed to make a wine that reminded many of the potential of the Riojan white wines. The death of his father, changes in the family and in the wine market led to a kind of family reshuffle: Alvaro Palacios returned to Rioja and headed the family bodega, and Rafael went to Galicia, to D.O. Valdeorras, believing in granite soils, the Atlantic climate and the Godeyo variety. Of course, everything was still very provincial compared to Rioja winemaking – for example, there were only 7 local winemakers working with godeyo, but Rafael succeeded. It was not easy: a forgotten, almost extinct variety required care and development, 20 hectares were made up of 26 small plots, it was also not easy to draw attention to the wine. But success came: Jose Penin, the most famous wine critic, immediately declared the wines of Rafael Palacios a sensation. Flattering comparisons with Burgundy began. Rafael himself formulates his goal as working on creating a wine of complex taste, with hints of sea freshness and soil minerals. He says that it is very difficult to work with so many small plots: each plot is controlled separately, with different periods of maturation, manual grape harvest and vinification. Rafael says that even for pruning vines, if you do everything the way he wants, you need to hire 5 seasonal workers, whom he simply will not find in his area. And, of course, his farm is very much looking forward to how the wine from godeyo will develop over the years in bottles. We choose wine in a restaurant

It is very difficult – classification, and even in between times. But let’s try: for me there are three main styles. Fruity, there is enough of it in Spain and it has completely taken place (moscatel, berdejo, …). In principle, Albariño and many acidic, fresh varieties also produce quite fruity wines. In this style, the main thing: aromas. The second style is more difficult to define: you can call it more neutral. Without a sharp fruity aroma, more dry and austere. This group includes wines ranging from a sea of ​​hectoliters of arneis wine, the most common in Spain, to excellent wines from the rare and capricious garnacha blanc, for example. The best wines of this group can be recognized by the core chill, some pleasant bitterness that this wine leaves in the aftertaste. In this style, the main thing is the style itself and the main taste, which remains in memory for a long time. Often this taste is a varietal characteristic of a particular variety. For example, garnacha blanca or palomino. And the third style, let’s say, the most complex for Spain, mineral, with complex aromas and shades. In this style, the main ones are: terroir and aftertaste, which are called mineral, marine, Atlantic. How many times have critics promised a new Chardonnay in Navarre, a second Burgundy in Galicia and other sensations in Spanish winemaking – but in practice Spain has not yet been given this high style, and the peaks that are conquered by the best Riesling and Chardonnay wines. More precisely, it succeeds, but only a few – about this and our notes today.

The promised blitz, or how to become an expert on the first try

This story began a long time ago, in 1870, when the brothers Jaime and Miguel Torres started building their winery in Vilafranca del Penedès. Even people who are not very interested in wine know the Torres estate. It must be admitted that this is the case when the quantity did not hurt the quality. And the current head of the family clan, Miguel Torres, got into our notes precisely for his touching attitude to still white wines. The fact is that I was a little cunning: in Spain there are great white wines, very long and well known to the whole world. This is, firstly, the culture of sparkling wine cava, the main competitor of champagne, and, secondly, a variety of sherry wines from the south of Spain. These two stories deserve separate articles, and I deliberately omitted them – today we are talking only about still white wines. So, Miguel Torres, being a Catalan who was commanded by God to develop projects with cava sparkling wines, and being a Spaniard who can’t help but look at sherries, for some reason focused exclusively on still white wines. He recently said in an interview that his daughter Mireia is finally preparing a project with kava, and also that he is considering projects in Jerez. But so far these are only projects and promises. The journalist asked Miguel Torres why he and his team are, to put it mildly, in no hurry with sparkling wine and sherry. Miguel Torres said it was more important for him to know exactly how Milmanda 2009 behaves in a bottleyear than to fuss and start something new.

So, if we say that there is no excellent chardonnay in Spain, then this is not the exact wording: the choice is small, but you can always buy Milmanda Torres or Chivite Collecciin 125 wine from the Chivite bodega, which is just below. Wine Milmanda was born as a result of long experiments with plots and aging in oak barrels. The style of wine is quite dense, concentrated, you will find both “toasted bread” and other shades of chardonnay. Torres also made excellent Sauvignon Blanc Fransola, Gewurztraminer and other white wines. Wines have received well-deserved recognition around the world. I have tried these wines from vintages of different years. The disadvantages include the relatively high price for Spanish white wines and the unequal quality of different vintages. But the same thing can be fully attributed to the best French and Italian competitors: a rather high cost and dependence on the harvest. One well-known critic wrote that no one would tell the buyer this sad truth, but winemakers all know it: in France, only every third year is unconditionally good, and in Spain every second. The rest of the years are difficult for the winemaker. In a good year, the harvest pleases and the wine too, but in a bad year, you have to try very hard. In California, the weather situation is much more stable. Perhaps that is why Miguel Torres’ sister Marimar Torres has been successfully developing the project there for a long time, releasing serious chardonnays and pinot noirs, very worthy. I also mentioned the outstanding project in Navarra Chivite Coleccion 125. It was made by the bodega Chivite in 1985, having managed to fully realize the potential of their land and Chardonnay grapes. As I already mentioned, great hopes were pinned on Navarra in terms of white and rosé wines, but so far they have only partially materialized: if you want a decent inexpensive wine, you can’t go wrong choosing something from Navarra. Last chapter: practical

Here are some arguments in favor of white wine, so that you do not neglect it:

– Wine, as the French joke, cures all diseases except one: alcoholism. But in this sense, white is preferable. A hangover from it is easier, that is, you can drink more without fear of consequences. Less oak, less tannins, less degree of alcohol – no headache in the morning.

– Combination with food. Not only seafood and fish, but also any white and pink meat (rabbit, turkey, game, …), pasta or pies, but you never know what. Look for your combinations: sometimes red wine is contraindicated, but white will help out.

– It is difficult to quench your thirst with red wine. It is no coincidence that the Germans and Spaniards carbonate, dilute with water and cool red wine. But isn’t it easier to order a bottle of white?

– You will discover a lot of new things: on those wines that we have mentioned today, the light has not converged like a wedge.
