Broken fortunes of Hollywood: the story of Jayne Mansfield – the main rival of Marilyn Monroe
Jayne Mansfield, 1950
Rapid career rise and recognition of Hollywood, rivalry with the main stars of America of that time, a series of unsuccessful novels, fading fame and tragic death – the fate of Jayne Mansfield can hardly be called happy, but the actress still managed to perpetuate her name on the pages of world history and leave a mark. How a girl from a small American town conquered Hollywood, why her successful career ended, and how the life of a famous actress ended – we tell in our material.
Vera Jane Palmer (real name and maiden name of the actress) was born April 19, 1933 in the small town of Bryn Mar, Pennsylvania. Her father, Herbert William Palmer, was a lawyer, and her mother, Vera Geoffrey Palmer, was a housewife. The profession of Vera’s father was associated with frequent moves, and therefore the Palmer couple regularly changed their place of residence – when the girl went to kindergarten, the family moved to New Jersey, and a little later to Texas.

Then, in 1936, the girl’s father died, and Mrs. Palmer remarried, and the future movie star of the screen was left to her own devices. By the way, Vera did not waste this time in vain and devoted herself entirely to her studies – she received exceptionally high marks in all subjects, played the piano and violin, studied Spanish and German, and also went to dance classes.
At the age of 17, Vera met her first husband, public relations specialist Paul Mansfield – it was then that the future celebrity decided to change her name to Jane and leave her husband’s surname. And six months later, the couple had a child – a daughter, who was named Jane Marie Mansfield.
The couple lived quite an active life – the couple attended acting classes at the Southern Methodist University of Dallas, made big plans for the future and traveled a lot. So, they spent a semester in Los Angeles, where Jane studied at the University of California, then lived in Austin, and then went to Georgia. The couple eventually returned home, where Jane met actor Baruch Lumet, who actively helped the future celebrity master the basics of acting, and also on April 1954 years helped her pass the casting in one of the projects of the Paramount studio.

It was from this small role that Jayne Mansfield’s career began, and in the same year she moved to Los Angeles with her husband and daughter. At first, the actress was not easy – she had to earn extra money as a waitress, cashier, participate in auditions for minor roles, star in cheap commercials, but Jane was confident in her abilities and was not going to give up. A little later, the girl decided to dye her brown hair in a platinum blond, believing that this particular image would bring her success, and she did not lose.
Having developed a new image, Mansfield posed several times for the famous Playboy magazine, and after that they started talking about her as a “stunning blonde” who could outshine Marilyn Monroe herself.
In 1955, the actress announced her divorce from Paul, because he was dissatisfied with her frank shootings and the image that she chose for herself – the actress’s contemporaries believed that the decision to divorce was absolutely correct, since Jane’s first husband was insanely jealous and constantly restricted her freedom, which could put an end to her career.

And the very next year, the film association 20th Century Studios signed a six-year contract with the future star, and this event determined her fate. Jane began to actively act in films and gain more and more fans around the world – the public called her “one of the sexiest actresses of our time”, and critics considered her the main rival of Marilyn Monroe and even called her “Marilyn Monroe for the working man.” However, the famous blonde, according to rumors, did not believe in Jane’s success and spoke of her colleague in the following way:0003
“I understand that imitation is a form of flattery, but she does it so vulgarly and clumsily that I don’t believe in her success.” around their personal lives. The public attributed to Jane novels with Robert and John F. Kennedy, and critics and media representatives wrote that “Mansfield’s personal life is her most striking role.”
Jane Mansfield meeting with Queen Elizabeth, 1957
At the end of 1956, Jane starred in the film “This Girl Can’t Do It Else”, which gained incredible popularity and brought its creators several times more profit than the film “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” with Marilyn Monroe, which was released three years earlier. The following year, Mansfield played in the Lost Bus project and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Newcomer Actress, for which Carroll Baker and Natalie Wood also competed.
From that moment on, Jane was considered one of the most successful representatives of her profession and the sex symbol of Hollywood, and according to representatives of the media, at that time she was the most photographed celebrity and appeared in the press more often than any other media person, and this was the merit of Mansfield herself – according to acquaintances of the actress, she never hid personal details of her biography from journalists and willingly posed for camera lenses not only on set, but also in everyday life.
By the way, it is the role in The Lost Bus that is recognized by critics as the best actress in her career, because there she was able to demonstrate her dramatic talent and move away from the image of a sexy blonde that the studio imposed on her (and which she initially adhered to herself). Nevertheless, her representatives believed that the emphasis on sexuality and “slight stupidity” would be a winning solution, and Jane continued to play the roles of superficial beauties.
Jane Mansfield, 1955 year
In 1958, Jane married a second time – an actor and athlete from Hungary, Mickey Hargitay, became her chosen one. In the same year, Columbia Pictures offered the actress a role in The Book, a Bell and a Candle, but she had to turn it down because she was pregnant.
Unfortunately, this rejection was the beginning of the end – the producers were unhappy with the way the actress prioritized, and the public began to get tired of the image of a beautiful and stupid blonde. Then Jayne Mansfield gave birth to two more children, which also influenced her refusal to participate in a number of projects offered to her (including Kiss Me Stupid, where she was supposed to replace Marilyn Monroe), and at 19In 62, the studio refused to renew the contract with the actress.

However, soon the Hollywood star managed to surprise the audience – she accepted Tommy Noonan’s invitation to play in the film Promises! Promises! ”, where she starred completely naked and became the first actress in the history of cinema who decided on such a risky step.
After that, there were no iconic roles in the portfolio of the Hollywood celebrity – Jane starred in low-budget films, participated in shows and performed on the stages of nightclubs, and then began to rapidly lose the “remains” of popularity due to a sharp weight gain after the fourth pregnancy, and a little later, the actress divorced her husband, which, according to rumors, was a big blow for her.
In 1964, Jane remarried – her third husband was the Italian filmmaker Matt Cimber, with whom Mansfield gave birth to their fifth child, son Tony. However, this union was not destined to last long – soon the actress began to abuse alcohol and openly declare that she does not love Cimber, and also regularly cheats on him. The marriage ended in 1965.
Jane Mansfield, 1955
Jane Mansfield, 1957
After the divorce, Jane fell into depression, which she “treated” with large doses of alcohol and illegal substances, and the former Hollywood star earned her living by performing in second-rate nightclubs. At that time, she began to meet with her old acquaintance, lawyer Sam Brody, who regularly beat her and also showed aggression towards her children.
And on June 28, 1967, her life was tragically cut short – that evening, Jane and Sam, along with the actress’s three children and her driver, were driving to New Orleans along Highway # 90, and at about 2:30 in the morning there was a terrible accident. The actress’s car crashed into a trailer at full speed, killing all three adults in front of the car. The children of the actress, who were sleeping in the back seat at that time, miraculously survived, but were seriously injured.
Jane Mansfield, 1955
The death of Jayne Mansfield, who at that time was only 34 years old, deeply touched the public – the fans of the actress sincerely sympathized with her relatives and mourned for the departed star of the era. She was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Pennsylvania on July 3, 1967, and a little later, her cenotaph was erected in Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Santa Monica Boulevard.
The tragic story of the legendary actress more than once formed the basis of works of art and cinematic projects, and her memory is still alive in the hearts of her fans – so, after the death of Jayne Mansfield, researchers of her biography noted not only her acting talent, but insight and perseverance, thanks to which she was able to create an image that gave her fame and recognition.
Jayne Mansfield, 1958
By the way, in one of the interviews, the daughter of actress Mariska Hargitay, who also achieved success in acting, paid tribute to her mother and said:
but no one really knew her. She had an IQ of 163, she was a very smart woman, a caring mother, and a really talented actress who was able to achieve everything on her own.”

The tragedy of Hollywood’s “smartest stupid blonde” Jane Mansfield
Actress Jayne Mansfield has become no less iconic than Marilyn Monroe. But once Jane was “created” as a replacement for the main blonde Hollywood. It’s hard to name a few of her films right off the bat, but she was a very noticeable figure. Few people can boast an IQ of 163, real talent and perseverance. Although it was not without those who did not love her and even hated her: she was called too scandalous and was accused of speculating a lot on her sexuality. Jane Manesfield lived a colorful and eventful life that ended tragically. Let’s tell you what was one of the most seductive actresses of the twentieth century.
Little Miss Palmer
The future Hollywood star was born in the small town of Philipsburg, New Jersey. At birth, she received the name Vera Jane Palmer. But few people called the girl Vera, preferring the middle name. Jane was the only and very beloved child in the family of lawyer Herbert William Palmer and his wife Vera Jeffery. But when the little girl was barely three, her father was killed by a heart attack. Mother very hard experienced such a blow of fate. Young Jayne Mansfield
The inheritance that the widow and daughter received after the death of the father of the family could slightly alleviate the pain of loss. Accustomed to a rich life from an early age, Jane will always strive for high standards into adulthood. Soon the mother found a new husband, the engineer Harry Pierce became him, they moved to live in Texas.
Charming Jane showed herself as a very talented child from childhood. She studied perfectly, went to dances, played the violin, viola and piano. She was excellent at the exact sciences and foreign languages, she was fluent in five. The girl was not only incredibly smart, but also very beautiful. The burning brunette (she will become a blonde later) was the most beautiful girl in the district, not a single beauty contest was held without her.
Early marriage, a child and the beginning of a journey
But Jane’s extraordinary intelligence did not prevent Jane from repeating the scenario of other much less intelligent girls. Already finishing school, she became pregnant from her peer Paul Mansfield, got married and her life turned from a fairy tale into hell. Accustomed to a life of prosperity, the girl found herself in poverty. Jane Mansfield
The mother of the future actress helped her by paying for her studies at the university in Los Angeles. But the young family had to pay for their lives and provide for the child on their own. Jane had no time for fun: she gave private dance lessons, sold popcorn, filmed for some obscure commercial. At this time, she had already begun her journey to an acting career, constantly going through auditions. At what she went to a variety of samples, it did not matter to her what kind of film it would be.
Such an early marriage, like many such unions, was doomed. The fault of the gap was the constant betrayal of both spouses. Paul also did not like that his wife brought a rabbit, three cats and four dogs to a rented apartment. Very soon, Jane broke up with her first husband, and in fact became a single mother. Although they fought for three years for custody of the child, the court left the daughter with her mother. Jayne Mansfield with her first husband Paul Mansfield
Mansfield understood that she could only rely on herself. Jane needed to act quickly, so she came up with a plan. She dyed her black curls a platinum blonde, took the most revealing blouse from the closet and began to study orders. She didn’t have much luck at first. On TV, her outstanding forms were not very much in demand, since for that time her image was too sexy. Then she got her first role in the movie “Women’s Jungle” and was paid $150. Jayne Mansfield in “Jungle of Women”
Second Marilyn Monroe
In 1956, 20th Century Fox had a falling out with Marilyn Monroe. It was a lucky ticket for little-known aspiring actress Jayne Mansfield. Filmmakers were urgently looking for a seductive busty blonde similar in type. Jane Mansfield (left) / Marilyn Monroe (right)
The fact is that the film studio had already stamped out identical scenarios and it was necessary to film the material. Jane, although she had a very modest filmography, got the role right away. The picture with her participation “This Girl Cannot Otherwise” was received very warmly in the USA, the audience liked the new star.
The actress’s career took off, she was bombarded with offers. And although the roles were of the same type, she took on everything that was brought to her. In 1957, the picture “The Lost Bus” brought Jane critical acclaim – she received the “Golden Globe” as a debutante. Jayne Mansfield in the film “This girl can’t help it”
In addition to film roles, Mansfield played on Broadway: from 1955 to 1956, she appeared on stage as many as 444 times. And, of course, she popularized the then-new Playboy magazine. Issues with her photo were swept off the shelves. Jayne Mansfield in the film “The Lost Bus”
Jane called herself “the smartest stupid blonde in Hollywood.” She was adored and hated. And of course, she was envied, especially by colleagues in the shop. In 1957, a photo spread around the world, in which Sophia Loren herself looks enviously in Jane’s cleavage. And she, for a second, had a 4 breast size with a waist of 51 cm.0166
An ideal husband
Such a luxurious woman has never suffered from a lack of male attention. And after the divorce from her first love, she did not get bored for a long time. Jane Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay
The second husband of the actress was her male counterpart. His name was Mickey Hargitay. He was a bodybuilder, actor, and Mr. Universe winner. Needless to say, how ambitious this man was. The desire for success and love for grand gestures simply captivated Jane. For example, as proof of his love, he gave his beloved a 10-carat diamond ring for $5,000 (about $200,000 in today’s equivalent).
The marriage ceremony took place just a few days after the official divorce from Paul. Many people were invited to the wedding, and the ceremony itself took place in a glass church so that everyone could see and photograph them. Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay
Jane and Mickey have a perfect union. Not only did they love each other, but they were excellent working partners. They starred in films together, traveled around the country with their own almost erotic show.
In it, Hargitay dressed in leopard print shorts, twisted around his waist and tossed his wife, who also had little clothes on. The couple had several joint ventures for two and even a biographical book. They also became the parents of three children. Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay in their own show
Divorces and lovers
The schedule was just crazy, but Mansfield seemed to find time and energy for everything. Moreover, she managed to cheat on her almost perfect husband. Moreover, her adultery was practically public, which definitely did not add points to her reputation. At 19In 62, for example, she had an almost open affair with the Italian producer Enrico Bomba, and in 1963 she left her husband and went to the Brazilian performer Nelson Sardelli. Jane Mansfield
Meeting with other men, she did not stop fulfilling her marital duty with her legal spouse. And when she and Mickey officially divorced, the actress was in for a surprise – she found out that she was pregnant from her already ex-husband. Therefore, in order to save the already tarnished reputation of the mother of his children, he pretended that they were together. Jane Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay with children
The actress eventually broke up with Sardelli. But long after the divorce from her husband and parting with her lover, she did not have to be bored. In the fall of 1964, she married for the third time – to director and producer Matt Simber. Jayne Mansfield with children
Jane’s freedom-loving nature did not allow her to live a quiet family life, so the couple separated after 10 months, and divorced a year later. The reason was the constant betrayal of the actress, which she no longer hid. Mansfield drank a lot, and it began to turn into an addiction. By the way, at the time of parting with her third husband, she was pregnant again. Jane Mansfield and Matt Cimber
Jayne Mansfield was similar to Marilyn Monroe not only in her type, but also in her taste for men. Even before Marilyn’s scandalous romance with John F. Kennedy, the president had a brief fling with Jane. In the series of her lovers, his brother Robert is also listed. Her long track record of victories also includes the names of French restaurateur Claude Terraille and Brazilian billionaire Jorge Guinle. In her bed, the blonde preferred to see status and rich men, and they happily agreed to this. Jayne Mansfield and Matt Cimber
The last love of the actress was Sam Brody, her lawyer, with whom she began an affair a year before her death.

Despite all the efforts of the glory and significance, like Monroe, she did not receive. Yes, and replace Marilyn, no matter how problematic she was, Jane could not. The 20th Century Fox studio, with which the actress had a contract, stopped betting on her and sent her to Europe to star in second-rate films, some of which were not even released.
Mansfield was last mentioned in the context of her acting career in 1963. Then the sensational picture “Promises! Promises! Jane became the first American actress to be completely naked in the frame. The promotional videos promised, “You’ve never seen so many Janes.” Jayne Mansfield
By the end of her career, Jayne Mansfield earned money by appearing for money at various events and performing in nightclubs. Her feminine figure with rounded shapes, which once made her rich and famous, ceased in demand in the cinema of the 60s, a completely different type was needed. It was a thin, sophisticated girl, like Audrey Hepburn.0003 Poster for the film “Promises! How Blonde Changed Culture
Jayne Mansfield was one of the founders of the image of the stupid blonde who understands that brains are not needed when there are curvaceous. Jane Mansfield
And the actress was one of the first stars to understand that the press can be not an enemy, but a source of income. Jane stuck to one rule throughout her career: be as frank as possible. She never refused to shoot commercials, photo shoots and, moreover, interviews. This paid off: at 19In 60, she was named the most photographed celebrity on the planet, and none of her competitors were mentioned in the press as often as she was.
Mansfield was a real newsmaker: she had an affair, then a wedding, then a divorce, then a pregnancy, then a scandal with her ex. But there was another permanent reason for which she was constantly written about in the newspapers. These are her outfits. Every now and then something happened to them: they were torn, unfastened, untied, or even fell down. And there was always a crowd of photographers around. Jayne Mansfield
Real Barbie
It was rumored that Jayne Mansfield was the prototype of Barbie. The very first doll, which has little in common with the replicated image. Like it or not, she had one “doll” passion – pink. His actress just adored. She walked down the aisle in a pink dress, drove the only pink Cadillac in Hollywood, and lived in a real pink palace. Jay Mansfield loved pink
Her house was like Barbie’s house. it had 40 rooms, and there was a fountain in the hall, from which rose champagne flowed on special days. Pink Palace Jane Mansfield
The walls in the bathroom were covered with pink fur, and the bath itself was in the shape of a heart. Jane Mansfield’s house was a real Barbie palace
Tragic departure
At the end of June 1967, the terrible news “Jane Mansfield lost her head” spread all over the newspapers. At what literally. A terrible, irreparable tragedy has occurred. Jayne Mansfield
On the eve of her death, the actress worked two of her shows in a club in Biloxi, Mississippi. Together with her last boyfriend Sam Brody, three children whom she took with her to performances, and a driver, they got into the car. New Orleans was waiting for them, where the star was supposed to have an event the next day.
A Buick with six passengers crashed into a truck at half past two in the morning at full speed. The impact was so strong that the three adults in the front seat were killed instantly. The heads of Jane, Sam and the driver were badly damaged. The wig came off the actress during the impact, so the truck driver thought it was her head. Jayne Mansfield with children
The children in the back seat miraculously survived. Jane Mansfield
