Do you want to grow a plant from the cypress family on the site? Pay attention to the cypress tree: planting and caring for it is not difficult, while the tree is frost-resistant and has many varieties with different needle colors and needle shapes.

Cypress is often confused with cypress or thuja. This is a tree that can reach 70 m in height. Its branches are flatter and smaller than those of cypress. How to plant

You should not fool yourself with growing a seedling from a seed – this is a “long game”. Seedlings must be taken from a trusted nursery.

Choose a semi-dark area for cypress. He does not need too much light, especially if the needles are bluish or warm green. For light green varieties or cypress trees with a yellowish crown, you will need a lighter place. Do not plant this tree in the lowlands. The soil is loamy. The plant does not tolerate alkaline soil. Prepare for planting in April, when the snow has melted and the ground is already warm enough. The hole should be dug in advance, as an option – even the previous autumn. The fact is that the cypress root system does not like the subsidence of the earth, so let it sag before it is planted. Dig a hole about a meter deep. Lay a thick layer of drainage on its bottom, and then fill it up to half with a mixture of humus, peat, sand and soddy soil. Before planting, moisten the hole, and water the seedling well with root. The seedling is lowered into the hole, the cover is removed from the roots already in the planting hole. Shake off the ground to straighten the roots. Fill the seedling with earth and tamp it down so that the tree does not fall. Experienced gardeners advise planting a cypress so that the root neck peeks out of the ground by 10-15 cm. After a few hours, when the earth sags, it is necessary to cover the root neck with a new layer of soil and mulch. It would be better to tie the seedling to the support – so the trunk will form more evenly. From the cypress, dense green hedges are taught. If you plant more than one plant, but a group, the distance between them should be at least a meter: the roots of this tree grow more to the sides than down.

Attention: cypress is a rather heat-loving plant. It is worth growing in open ground only in the southern regions of Russia. In the central part, in the Urals and Siberia, he feels great in a large tub, which should be brought indoors for the winter.

Taking care of the cypress tree

A young cypress seedling will need top dressing. A little nitroammophoska can be added at the planting stage – add to the soil mixture to fill the tree. The first self-feeding will be needed in 7-8 weeks. Take a universal fertilizer for cypresses and dilute half of the “adult” rate. If we write about the rest of the conifers – the plant needs moderate watering, then we will say unequivocally about the cypress: it is a big lover of water. It needs to be watered abundantly and regularly. In the warm season, once every 7 days, a bucket of water on a bush – this should become your habit. If the summer is dry, water the tree more often. In addition to watering once a week, spray the cypress leaf with water. Young trees and seedlings need to be sprinkled every day.

Keep an eye on the condition of the mulch and water the tree when the soil has dried under the mulch layer. If, for some reason, you do not mulch the trees, loosen the tree trunk after each watering. Exactly one year after planting in open ground, start pruning the plant. Cypress needs both sanitary and formative pruning. In the spring, you need to remove from him all the branches that have dried up, affected during the winter. After that, inspect the tree from afar – you will see which branches prevent it from maintaining the correct shape of a pyramid or cone (depending on the variety). Carefully cut off the extra shoots, just don’t get carried away – you can’t cut off more than a third of the green mass at a time. If you want to do everything scientifically, after the first shaping pruning, measure the length of the branches. At the end of the season, re-measure and cut about a third of the growth before wintering begins. Then, at the beginning of the new season, the cypress will already have a well-groomed appearance, and there is less chance that the tips of the branches will suffer from frost. nine0013

Speaking of wintering

Cypress suffers greatly from sunburn: it will lose all its attractiveness! Therefore, trees wintering in the open ground are covered with a spunbond or treated with a solution of antitranspirant Purshat-O . The latter option is much easier to implement, while trees will stand on the site in winter, and not wrapped pyramids. Treat those plants that winter indoors, because after the next “exit” to the street, they may turn yellow out of habit. If you want to replant the tree in the spring, carefully dig it out, keeping in mind that the roots grow sideways. Transfer to the prepared hole and care for the first year like a seedling. nine0013
