We hired Zoe so we could go on a brief date night to Halloween Horror Nights. Zoe did amazing with our one and only. She was nice and ready to jump in the moment she arrived. Our baby girl took a liking to her right away and we got home, she was fast asleep all snugly in her crib when we got home.We would love to hire Zoe again moving forward….

Lauriel W.

I hired Lauri’el for a day and a half of nannying while I was in Orlando from out of town. Lauri’el was such a good caregiver to my 5 year old son. She did a great job keeping him safe and entertained within our hotel. She took him to the pool and played with him while there, she made sure he wasfed and comfortable, and she regularly checked in with me about how things were going. She also was able to stay later after a last minute meeting and I was very grateful for her flexibility. If I’m in the area, I will definitely reach out to her again….

Alexa, was a good babysitter for the most part. Me and my son loved having her and my son truly adored her as well. I did inform her her services would be used for either having to run errands or date nightsduring our interview and she accepted the offer. As I am a professional and a single parent so I do need at least a few hours to myself to either take care of errands or to be around other adults.
She said she really loved my son and I did admire their connection. I felt so happy because at the moment I felt like I made a great decision for my son. Alexa randomly quit on us for issues she said outside of us and I felt bad for my son because we are already dealing with loss and she did it abruptly via text message without a verbal conversation. However I see she’s still has her job posting on here. It made me realize wow did you really care for my son?
If you hire her I would say look for transparency and honesty mostly being on the same page. Babysitters sometimes never care to realize how parents are the ones who have to pick up the Pieces and trust an entire stranger with their child so consistency & transparency is important. If you’re a parent please make sure you’re transparent with her and there’s a lack of judgement….

Home » Kids » Can’t afford a babysitter ? EIGHT alternatives to paying for a babysitter

I am a stay at home mom (here are my tips to stay home on one income) working one morning a week as a play therapist, so affording a babysitter can be tough.   When do you find that you need a babysitter? Maybe for date night or to run errands?  I find that I need them for a doctor or dentist appointment or even to go on a field trip with an older child.  Whatever the case, we need a babysitter sometimes.  I find that they are really expensive- it just isn’t worth it for me to pay a sitter ($80 for four kids), plus pay for dinner out ($35) plus buying the kids pizza or whatever to make it easier on the sitter ($10).  Our date-night has just become really expensive.

Here are 8 alternatives to paying for a babysitter:

  1. Mothers Morning Out – Our local YMCA offers a Mothers Morning Out program for $5 and the workers at our local YMCA are so wonderful!   My friend and I take our kids there.  They are sweet and so loving there.  They love seeing our kids come through that door!  Plus, they take the kids to the playground, the gymnastics room (to do the balance beam, trampoline, etc…), they do crafts (usually painting), and they have a snack.  It is for four hours in the mornings, so for $20,  you can’t beat it!  Plus, it is an open-door policy, so you can just go without making an appointment.
  2. Create your own Mother’s Morning Out.   Get a group of friends with kids together, find a common place (a church works well) or swap houses.  Each week, one or two parents watches the kids while the rest of us have three hours to run errands or do whatever we need to do.  I participated in a group like this for two years.
  3. Friends- offer to swap with your friends.  I have done this before and will continue to do this.   I will watch my friend’s children for a few hours and then the next week or month, she will watch our kids.  It works out perfectly and it gives our kids an extra play date!
  4. Family- My Mom is so great about helping us with our kids.  She watches our kids for us one day a week already (and she watches my brother’s kids on a different day) while I work as a Play Therapist.   She and my Dad will watch the kids for us if we go out, too.  My in-laws will also watch them when they come to visit, so that we can go out on a date.  My brother and I will swap kids, too.
  5. Churches “parents night out” – I know a lot of local churches that will offer a 3 hour “night out”.  You donate the amount that you feel would be helpful for them (normally they are raising money for a cause).   You can find these by asking around, for the most part.
  6. Your Gym- Our gym has a free two-hour childcare.  I normally just stay for an hour, but it is worth it.  If I have to do reports for work (I have to write up reports for play therapy) or if i want to just run around the track or work out & then take a kid-free shower, I will use this child-care.  Our kids don’t love it, but I take them swimming for 30 minutes afterwards (they have an indoor pool) and they don’t complain about going anymore.  My husband works late, so he doesn’t go to the gym with me, but if he did, I would consider this to be a date.  Walking around the track or playing racket ball or whatever… just having time with the two of us is a date.
  7. Put your kids to bed early.  Our kids are in bed by 7:30 almost every night. This allows my husband and I to have time to ourselves every night for 4 hours before we go to sleep.   We can order take-out, play a game, watch a movie, read, catch up on our DVR’d shows, etc…
ps- check out how I have taught our kids to sleep in later.
  8. Ikea or somewhere similar- Find places that have child-watch.  My husband and I like to go to Ikea because our kids LOVE the play area and we can shop with just our little ones, while the big kids play.  We just walk around, talk and hang out, while we shop.   We can all grab a bite to eat, too.   Our kids literally ask us every week if we can go to Ikea to “play in the kid area and get an ice cream cone”.   (We go every few months because it is still a 40 minute drive).I hope that these ideas gave you a few alternatives to finding a sitter. Ps- are you looking for fun activities for your kids that takes a minute to set up but gives them hours of play time?  Try these!ps- Speaking of being able to afford things, here is my list of great kid FREEBIES!Oh! and here is how I can afford to be a stay at home mom.

Do you really need a nanny? 15 ways to replace it

Natalya Kalashnikova asked marketer and mother-of-two Maria Kochkarina about how a working woman can free up time without hiring a full-time nanny.

You constantly feel tired

Figure out what takes time and effort. Draw a timeline of the day on a piece of paper: mark the start and end times of things, and also remember:

🍒 was there a child with you and what did he do (sleep, scream, eat, torment your smartphone),

🤯 what did you feel, what was your mood at that time (tired, wanted to sleep, was calm and cheerful).

Write down everything you pay attention to. You will have a good basis for thinking about what you want to acquire when “buying” a nanny: time to relax; time for housework; time to work, or you want to buy quality performance of some tasks. Your diary will be useful for changing the daily routine, planning new cases and deciding on delegation.

🍳 You get tired of cooking with the baby at the ready.

Consider convenience foods, buying ready-made foods, a food delivery service, or an au pair.

🗑 You spend the last of your energy on cleaning.

Ask a cleaning company how much it will cost to clean your apartment. Spoiler: is much cheaper than a nanny.

Going to the post office with two kids exhausted you.

Look on YouDo or Avito for a person who will send the package instead of you next time. Or call a babysitter for a couple of hours to go to the post office light.

👿 In the afternoon you become irritable, you don’t feel like doing anything, and by the evening you are ready to kill everyone.

Maybe you should call the babysitter for two or three hours after dinner? Or go to the nearest shopping center, take the child to the playroom there, and sit in the cafe herself?

😩 You are bored with your child when there are so many interesting things around.

Then yes, you need a babysitter.

You have to go to work, but there is no garden and grandmother

🏫 private kindergarten,

🤹‍♀️ daytime kids club,

👩‍👧‍👦 nanny for 2-3 children (you can team up with other moms),

👵Sometimes other people’s grandmothers are not averse to earn extra money as a temporary nanny.

The child goes to the garden and is often sick, you work and cannot often take sick leave

A nanny will help, but there may be difficulties. Some nannies refuse to take care of a sick child: they are afraid of getting infected, they don’t want to take responsibility, they don’t want to communicate with a pediatrician instead of a mother.

⏰ Hire not a permanent nanny, but a babysitter for a while while the child is not in the garden. If you are afraid to leave your child with a stranger for the first time, call the babysitter in advance to play with the child and give them the opportunity to get to know each other.

🗒 Gather a list of several candidates who are ready to sit with a sick baby – there is a chance that one of them will be able to come at the right time.

💻 If possible, arrange with your superiors that you will work remotely with partial load on days when the child is sick. Sometimes employers go for it.

Kindergarten closes before your working day ends

👩‍👧‍👦 You can save if you hire an escort for 2-3 children living in the neighborhood. Or, for a small fee, you can arrange with the mother or grandmother of a child from your group so that she also picks up your baby. Such evenings can be alternated – sometimes you take her child, sometimes she takes yours.

What other ways are there to do without a babysitter?

Three personal stories

“We do this sometimes during the holidays, when there is no money for the camp, and there is nowhere for the children to go. We divide the week into 3-4 mothers, and one takes off every third or fourth day, but on other days my child is busy for free. If there are several children, they, of course, yell and need to be fed. But it’s easier than keeping one of your own who whines or stares at cartoons all day long. But here, of course, it is important that the children know each other and play well.”

“At one time I looked after the old sick mother of my neighbor. I worked at home and could visit the old woman when she did not answer her daughter’s phone call, make sure that she took her medicine on time, let the doctor into the apartment and take his appointments. In gratitude for this, a neighbor sometimes took my daughter to her place and entertained her – she painted her nails, did her hair, taught her to dance. My daughter loved to go to Aunt Galya.

“It is customary in our garden to invite children to visit each other. Thus, it turns out that your child at least once (and preferably two) a week 2-3 hours after the garden plays away. If we cannot in return invite one of the children in the middle of the week, then we invite guests on the weekend – parents are only too happy to relax for a few hours. Another day, my husband or I leave work early, on other days we invite a babysitter.

A house on fire, prophets of Earth’s doom and dangerous technologies. Davos hosted an economic forum

One of the main topics of the 50th World Economic Forum in Davos, which took place on January 21-24, was the need to combat climate change. Greta Thunberg, a 17-year-old Swedish environmental activist, urged politicians to take action, as “our house is still on fire” and inaction “rekindles the flames with every hour.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the fight against climate change “a matter of survival.” US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly made it clear that he does not consider climate change a problem, in his speech veiledly criticized environmental activists, calling for “rejecting the eternal prophets of doom and their prophecies regarding the apocalypse.”

The forum traditionally discussed the state of the global economy. According to IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, the situation is starting to improve as tensions in world trade ease after the signing of an agreement between the United States and China.

A lot of attention was also paid to artificial intelligence in Davos. Representatives of leading technology companies noted that AI will help a huge number of people, although they agreed that this area needs to be regulated. Renowned Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari has warned that AI will allow advanced nations — primarily China and the United States — to make a leap in development that threatens everyone else with bankruptcy or turning into digital colonies.

Babysitters and vacations: what Zelensky offered investors in Davos

On January 22, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky spoke at the forum. He said that the authorities have prepared the Investment Nanny program: each foreign company that invests in Ukraine from $100 million will be provided with a manager who will help her 24/7. In addition, investors who spend more than $10 million during privatization this and next years will be granted tax holidays. For five years, they will not pay income tax. The President also said that a special international arbitration may appear in Ukraine.

Ukrainian businessmen reacted to the idea of ”investment nannies” without much enthusiasm. The owner of Smart-Holding, Vadim Novinsky, called it “quite dubious” and stressed that Ukraine had repeatedly tried to create a “decision institute”, but this approach was ineffective. “Well, we ourselves are not easy guys. We, if anything, organize nannies for ourselves, ”said Alexander Yaroslavsky, owner of DCH, in a comment to HB.

Ukrzaliznytsia and Deutsche Bahn: a memorandum without obligations and a loud statement by the prime minister

On January 22, in Davos, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine and the German railway operator Deutsche Bahn AG signed an agreement on further cooperation in the transport industry and development of Ukrzaliznytsia JSC. The document states that the parties “will explore the possibilities of creating a strategic partnership (alliance)”. No specific obligations are provided for in the memorandum. During the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk said that Ukraine would retain full control over Ukrzaliznytsia, and German specialists would work on reforming the management mechanisms of the state-owned enterprise.

The Memorandum was signed by Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Vladislav Krykliy and Head of the Department of International Relations of Deutsche Bahn AG Jens Grefer / Photo: mtu.gov.ua

But the very next day, January 23, the prime minister announced that Ukraine wants to transfer the railway to the management of Deutsche Bahn for 10 years. The German state-owned company promptly denied Honcharuk’s statement. But by evening, another statement from Deutsche Bahn appeared. It says that the involvement of DB in the operational management of the Ukrainian company is still being discussed. Sergei Vovk, director of the Center for Transport Strategies (TsTS), said in a commentary to NV Business that the memorandum and Goncharuk’s statement are only an intermediate stage. Finalization of documents should take place in February.

Ukraine borrowed 1.25 billion euros at a record low rate

€1.25 billion). This allowed the Ministry of Finance to reduce the rate from the expected 5% to 4.375%, which is a record for Ukrainian government bonds. Timothy Ash, strategist at Bluebay Asset Management, called the placement “outstanding”, and Alexander Parashchiy, head of the analytical department at Concorde Capital, noted that the Ministry of Finance chose the right time to enter the external borrowing market.

    Ukrposhta changed losses to profit

Ukrposhta reported this week that, according to operational data, in 2019 the state-owned company received UAH 600 million in net profit against more than UAH 500 million loss in 2018. Net income from product sales increased by 20.6% – from UAH 6.8 billion to UAH 8.2 billion.

In addition, the head of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia, Evgeny Kravtsov, said that this state-owned company managed to significantly improve its financial results last year. According to preliminary data, in 2019-m she received 2.5-3 billion hryvnia profit. In 2018, its net profit amounted to UAH 203.0 million.

The main events of the outgoing year in photos: a difficult 2016

“2016 turned out to be a harder year than the previous one,” the president said at the Kremlin’s New Year’s buffet. And you can’t argue with that.
Only now it turns out that exactly the same was the year 2015. And 2014 was harder than 2013. And so on… At least another five years.
It does not add optimism. But “difficulties harden”
and the Russians are already world champions in everyday hardening.

How much does it cost to find a good nanny in Nur-Sultan – Family Notes

If grandparents live in another city, and the kindergarten is still far away, then there is only one thing left – to look for a good nanny. And nannies in Astana, firstly, are “not cheap”, and secondly, it is difficult to find a good specialist.

The editors of Family Notes went the way of a mother who is looking for a nanny. So we hasten to share our experience.

How much does it cost to hire a nanny?

Half day – 50,000-60,000 tenge , and this applies only to weekdays. But a full day, including games with a child and training, will cost from 100 000 tenge . A nanny will be more expensive – a housekeeper. Her services – from 120 000 tenge .

But a full day, including games with the child and training, will cost from 100 000 tenge . A nanny will be more expensive – a housekeeper. Her services – from 120 000 tenge .

Method No. 1. The first thing that comes to mind

    • OLX — here you can find any specialist, including a nanny. The minimum payment for placing an ad is 1,400 tenge. If you also need advertising, so that as many people as possible see the request, you will have to pay at least 1,200 tenge.
    • naimi.kz is a good site and application for hiring a nanny. But placing an ad is the same as on OLX – 1400 tenge. Additional advertizing of the announcement — 1266 tenges.

Method No. 2. Card file of specialists

http://supernanny.kz/ – a large number of nannies are presented on this site. True, there are more offers in Almaty than in Astana, but it’s worth a try. You can place your ad for free and wait until the nanny herself responds. Or refer to the already posted questionnaires on the site.

As you can see, the questionnaires are quite detailed:

    • have a photo
    • age
    • rating
    • reviews from verified users
    • salary level
    • specialization is indicated

However, in order to talk to the nanny, you must first pay 1990 tenge for her number. Even if the nanny is not suitable for some parameters, the payment for the contact is not refundable. Therefore, before paying, carefully read the questionnaire.

Method #3 Hello from the 90s

Once upon a time, only the “elite” could afford domestic staff. To do this, they turned to special agencies for the selection of domestic staff. Such agencies still exist. For example, the Dobrodeya agency. The agency commission is 50% of the employee’s monthly income, one-time.

Method number 4. You can’t do without Instagram

We are talking about special Instagram accounts that post resumes of nannies in Astana. You can view the resumes of nannies or advertise yourself. The price for placing an ad pleases: 200-500 tenge. The main thing here is to understand – are the subscribers real or cheated? To understand, see how many likes and comments are under the posts.

Here is the address of one of these accounts @nyani_v_astane. which was recommended to us by mothers according to the results of our survey. (The survey was conducted in public FB groups)

Method number 5. FB also rules

Another true Internet method posting on your personal page on Facebook, VK or Instagram. If you do not have many subscribers, let your friends come to the rescue. Ask them to share your post, and maybe the right person will be found.

Method number 6. Whatsapp mailing made easy

WhatsApp messaging is a great free option. Send messages with a detailed description of your request to the chats of kindergartens, schools, residential buildings, and just advertising chats someone will certainly respond.

This is an example of a good announcement.

It is important to compose the ad text correctly. It doesn’t matter if it’s a WhatsApp mailing list or a post on social networks. Try to write as much information as possible: child’s age, gender, address, work schedule, salary, document requirements, education requirements, skills, responsibilities.

The more accurately you write everything down, the faster you will find the specialist you need.

Method No. 7. Pass it on to another

Word of mouth is the good old fashioned way. But even here there are pitfalls. Let’s figure it out.

    • Most of all, a nanny is needed for those mothers whose children have not yet grown up. So before taking advice, weigh the pros and cons. If the children of your friend have already grown up and do not need the supervision of a nanny, you can contact the teacher. And if the children are small, and their mother is happy to share the contacts of the nanny, think about it: is this help disinterested or is this an attempt to send you a bad specialist?
    • “There is no comrade for the taste and color” – very good folk wisdom. What may be normal for one mother may be unacceptable for you. Get all the details from your friends. Let’s say you need an active nanny, a typical extrovert in temperament. She will be able to cheer up the child, and feed, and read a book. And your friend prefers that the nanny does not raise the child, but simply looks after the child while she is away for a few hours. Because she is convinced that only a mother can develop a baby and teach. Such a mother hires an introverted nanny who will not actively impose her parenting methods. And you are advised such a nanny, but she does not meet your requirements. And no one is to blame: you just need to clarify all the details and make it clear what exactly you expect from the teacher.

These were all the ways to find a nanny that we tried on ourselves. Do not forget that you can write anything on the Internet, but what kind of nanny will be in practice is a big question. Therefore, carefully prepare for the interview: make up questions in advance, do not forget about the sanction book and certificates, and do not neglect the reviews of the nanny’s previous clients. If possible, even call them. All these measures will help you find a worthy specialist .

    Nursery accessible

    Affordable crèches

Every child aged 1-3 should have a place in a free crèche

For many mothers, having a quality crèche can be a defining factor for their entire lives. The nursery, and then the kindergarten, give the mother an opportunity not to give up paid work – to remain financially independent . Not surprisingly, after 3 years of absence from work (or even more), it is extremely difficult to return back. Therefore, mothers often do not return, becoming dependent on other people’s sources of income.

Financial dependence of a woman on a man significantly increases the risks:

    • Poverty, especially in case of divorce
    • Domestic violence
    • Committing crimes
    • Alcoholism
    • Addictions
    • Negative effects on the child

Often the situation is such that a mother simply has no choice – she needs to return to a paid job immediately after giving birth. This happens, for example, in 90,005 low-income families or single mothers . Where to leave a child if nannies and private gardens are not affordable? After all, the allowance for a child after a year and a half is a penny that is impossible to live on. In this case, reliable, free nurseries are vital.

“Creating an enabling environment for reconciling family responsibilities for raising children with work is seen as an important part of the policy”
    National Strategy for Women

It is important to note that the level of education of Russian women is very high. There are more women with higher education than men. According to Rosstat, 58% of Russian women have a higher education , for men this percentage is much lower – 42%. That is, a woman in most cases can get a job that will provide at least a minimum standard of living for her and her child.

In a good nursery, the child will fully develop without negative consequences

    Nursery.

    At what age?

Formally, preschool education in Russia starts at 2 months and ends with school (7 years). In groups for children under 3 years old, the development, improvement, supervision and care of the child is carried out, an educational program is carried out. In practice, nurseries (now called early development groups) take children from the age of 1 or a year and a half.

“Educational organization provides preschool education, supervision and care for pupils aged from two months until the termination of educational relations”
Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia dated 08.30.

You can often hear psychologists recommend not to send children to kindergartens until the age of three. Moreover, a child at this age still does not know how to adequately serve himself, he may not tolerate a break with his mother and going out into society. This is not the case if the nursery groups in the kindergarten are organized correctly, taking into account all the characteristics of the early age, and highly qualified specialists look after the children . In many countries, children are given away from the age of 1 without negative consequences.

We wanted the best, but it turned out as always

But the main problem is not even whether a mother wants to send her child to kindergarten from an early age or not. There are practically no full-fledged full-day nursery groups left in Russia, not to mention their quality. Oddly enough, presidential decree No. 599 of May 7, 2012 (one of the so-called “May decrees”) added fuel to the fire, which set the goal of ensuring 100% access to preschool education for children aged 3 to 7 years.

The decree specifically refers to children aged 3-7 years and says nothing about children under 3 years old . Proceeding from this, officials rushed to solve the task in many respects due to the liquidation of nursery groups . But even due to this, they could not solve the problem of the queue for children aged 3-7 years. According to Rosstat, at the beginning of 2016, 192,800 children aged 3 to 7 were still on the waiting list for kindergartens. At the same time, the queue of children under 3 years old was 2,818,800. Thus, the problem of some children is solved at the expense of other children.

As a result of an ill-conceived frantic struggle of officials with a queue of children aged 3-7:

    • Liquidated nursery groups
    • Regular groups were overcrowded
    • Buildings in disrepair still in operation
    • In violation of the current legislation, 10,300 employees of kindergartens do not have secondary vocational and higher education
    • Complicated registration rules – often require permanent or temporary registration
    • Officials purchased buildings that were not suitable for accommodating children for kindergartens

The number and ratio of age groups of children in a preschool educational institution is determined by the founder – the municipality / city authorities. They decide for themselves who to take to kindergarten and who not. So we liquidated nursery groups quickly and without hassle.

“The availability and free of charge of pre-school education in state or municipal educational institutions are guaranteed”
Constitution of the Russian Federation. Article 43 Paragraph 2

The situation with places in nursery groups varies greatly from region to region. But none of the problems have been solved. As a rule, even if a mother gets in line before the baby is born, this does not guarantee a place. In some regions, the queue will never fit , since almost all nursery groups have been eliminated.

According to Rosstat, at the beginning of 2016, only 18.4% of children under the age of 3 attended nurseries in Russia, and 48.8% of children of this age were in the electronic queue for the nursery. The parents of the remaining 32.8% of children under 3 either did not want to use the nursery, or were not satisfied with the quality, or did not see the point in enrolling in such a huge queue.

According to the OECD, Russia has people to look up to. For example, in Denmark 65.2% of children under the age of 3 attend a nursery, Norway – 55%, France – 51.9%, Sweden – 46.8%.

Officials promise that the problem of a queue of children under 3 years old will also be solved. The government is even preparing a separate program to introduce new nursery groups. But for now, these are only plans that, against the backdrop of cuts in social spending, may remain on paper.

“Expected results: universal access to pre-school education for all categories of children”
    National Strategy for Children

    Example – Moscow

With the beginning of the execution of the May decree, the Moscow authorities simply changed the form for registering for kindergartens on the public services website. It has become technically impossible to enroll a child under 3 years old in kindergarten . Nursery groups were abolished in many Moscow kindergartens in the fall of 2013.

For children under three years old, only “short stay” groups are provided – 2-3 hours three times a week. Therefore, they do not create any conditions for mothers to work. This is just an example of one of the regions – many others have done the same.

“More than 60 thousand rural settlements (with a population of up to 5 thousand people), where almost 400 thousand children of preschool age live, do not have kindergartens. Due to the lack of transport accessibility, many children living in rural areas do not attend preschool organizations at all”
    Accounts Chamber

    Babysitters and private kindergartens

The lack of nurseries is solved by hiring a babysitter. But there are many complexities here. First, babysitting is expensive , especially for a full day. As a result, the salary of a nanny can be equal, or even exceed the salary of a working mother. Secondly, it is extremely difficult to find a proven qualified nanny – even at a high price, they are in great demand, literally worth their weight in gold. At the same time, no one trains 90,005 professional nannies 90,006. Many try to find a nanny with a higher pedagogical or medical education, but this is extremely difficult.

It is the huge industry of nannies, with their low qualifications, that demonstrates precisely the terrible state or complete absence of nursery groups in kindergartens. For example, in Norway, the babysitting profession has practically disappeared as a result of the effective work of nursery groups.

The second option is private kindergartens. For a full day, they will cost less than a nanny, but they will also cost a lot. At the same time, a private kindergarten may be very far from home, and its quality may be doubtful .

The third option is the child’s grandparents. But we do not consider this option as a solution to the problem. There can be different situations in families, it is difficult for older people to take on such a load, many grandparents, who still have a lot of strength, often continue to work themselves.

    What to do?

    1. Build the required number of kindergartens with nursery groups. Eliminate the queue for children aged 1 to 3 years
    2. Provide full day (12 hour stay) and extended day (13-14 hour stay) child care
    3. Establish and enforce quality standards for nurseries
    4. Provide training for highly qualified social nannies

    Share the initiative:

    Other program initiatives

“Nanny work is the lot of women who have nothing else to count on”

Still from the cartoon “The Kid and Carlson”

Our country, together with the whole world, has been discussing for several days now a nanny from Namibia, who beat a child and threw him against the wall. Me too, exotic! We have such news several times a year. At least the Namibian nanny didn’t cut off the baby’s head, but in Russia it happened.

Babysitting does not come from a good life

Today, in our country, work as a nanny or governess has become a kind of main profession. This means that women who go to babysit other people’s children either do not have other qualifications, or they do not have other prospects. It was the same before the revolution: babysitting became a lifelong occupation.

In the 1990-2000s, we had a period when students and pensioners took care of children, just like in the West. To define this employment, the English word babysitter began to be used. And it means a qualified person with a good past and / or a promising future. Babysitting is for a while.

Babysitting is destiny. And in recent years, it has become the lot of women, who, for the most part, have nothing else to rely on. This is probably due to the fact that, on the one hand, when choosing nannies, parents look more and more at recommendations and choose the most experienced ones. On the other hand, the nanny profession was overrun by a business that entered the market for these services in the form of recruitment agencies. Well, on the third hand, the state is running out of nannies, trying to regulate their qualifications more and more. All this is slowly pushing amateurs and enthusiasts out of the market and replacing them with professionals.

And who goes to babysitting? Since tsarist times, this work has been almost the last refuge of a woman. Peasant women went to nannies out of hopelessness, and educated young ladies suddenly orphaned, matrons who were widowed and lost their homes, or European immigrants who did not settle in a new country, suddenly left for governesses. Few people went to this job from a good life.

In Soviet times, it was exactly the same, only babysitting ceased to be a profession, that is, the main, for life and the only way to earn money. Girls-children went to nannies, because there was no other work for them, and they had to earn money or get off their parents’ necks early. Girls were willingly taken, because they were paid little, besides, they demanded little food and space, which is important – they lived in a family. Sick pensioners and disabled people went to work as nannies, but only if they could not get a job as watchmen or cleaners. Because, contrary to today’s stories about the Soviet socialist paradise, pensions were meager. And because the work of a nanny, if done in good faith, is very difficult. Even not all mothers can be alone with children without disruption all day long.

With such complexity, the work was paid little, because this profession did not officially exist and they worked as nannies illegally.

    Nanny is a hopeless profession

Now that nannies are legalized, for many it has become a profession. And who is a professional nanny? Most likely, she did not find another job, she became a nanny, say, at the age of 25 and will work like this until her old age. It is almost impossible to grow in this profession. Unless you manage to get a governess in the house of the oligarchs or open your own agency. Both are incredible. And returning to a good job after working as a nanny is also not easy.

Today, child care is paid much better. But it was the growth in the salaries of nannies that played a bad joke on them. The fact is that today the wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers is increasingly narrowing. As a result, spending on a nanny has grown faster in 10 years than the salaries of parents. Why families are forced to look for a cheaper nanny. And cheaper means unreliable and illegal.

Still from the film “Mustached Nanny”

Now there are two categories of nannies. The first ones work with children for a long time, they have many recommendations, they are checked in agencies (sometimes only for appearances), but at the same time they are considered professional nannies, that is, they have no other career prospects, which is a tragedy in itself. The second category of nannies are women of different ages and with different professional activities in the past. But for some reason these women agree to illegal work and low wages. The low income and lack of a bright future for the nanny make her not the best companion for children.

It’s no surprise that nannies often lose their temper. Beat, of course, units. But indifference and cruelty among nannies is the norm

Especially towards children who cannot speak. It is almost impossible to control work with a child under two years old. Even if there is a surveillance camera in the house, it will not track whether the child was fed and changed his diaper on time. If at home, with the camera turned on, the nanny will not give the baby a tablet or turn on the TV, then on a walk she can safely do this and relax herself.

Problems are not removed when the child grows up and learns to speak. Yes, he can tell his parents about everything, but keep in mind that for children, a nanny is the person with whom they spend the most time, on which their food, hygiene, and walks depend. Therefore, a nanny can easily intimidate a child, persuade him, and even turn him against his parents. Which often happens. Babysitters sometimes have a complex psychological trauma: even if they do not love the child and their work, they feel jealousy towards his parents. The nanny sits and thinks: “I invest in him to the last strength, I don’t sleep because of him, I clean up after him, wash, feed him, and it’s all for a penny, and when he hears the turn of the key in the door, he rushes to his mother! “. I heard more than once from my friends and read on the net that nannies turned the child against the mother, inspired him that she did not love him and exchanged for work and money.

Another point: many nannies despise the women they work for. Especially if the nanny raised her own children herself. Simply because she knows perfectly well how she actually performs her duties. And he knows how others do it – nannies constantly communicate with each other: on the playground, in the clinic, in the kindergarten. The nanny knows for sure that she does not love the child. Yes Yes! If the situation in the family is hopeless, the nanny can maintain a neutral and even sympathetic attitude towards the mother. But if she was hired so that the mother simply had more free time or could earn money for a new car, the nanny’s attitude is often quite different.

The nanny is unlikely to love the child (even Arina Rodionovna is questionable)

Children who the nanny takes to her home are especially vulnerable. Firstly, parents cannot install cameras or a voice recorder there. Secondly, on their territory, any person, not excluding the nanny, feels more confident and, alas, with impunity. And if, at the same time, the nanny has her own small children in the house, then the child accepted for earnings will feel discrimination every minute. They don’t kiss him, they don’t lisp with him, they don’t stroke him on the head as often as relatives.

But even if we exclude cruelty and beatings, the main argument against the nanny remains – in comparison with her mother, she is cold and indifferent. Even when a nanny has been working in a family for many years, she, as a rule, will gladly refuse this family if she is offered a better job or her own housing. By the age of 4-5, a child is able to understand this. And understanding the truth of life does not brighten up his daily routine.

Therefore, if you can bring up children yourself, bring them up. Buying a new car or summer house can wait

Giving your child to a stranger is scary. Because a stranger doesn’t love your child the way you do. Even if the nanny raised five children herself and worked in a kindergarten all her life. Or, on the contrary, she always dreamed of her own children, but could not give birth to them. Everyone is aware of this fact, but some can cope with it, while others cannot.

Parents who leave their children with nannies are of two types: the former constantly worry and suffer from remorse, the latter distract themselves from the experiences with more pleasant thoughts. I think there are no parents who would completely trust nannies. Because, whatever one may say, the child spends most of his wakefulness with a strange woman who does not love him, who can hardly be controlled.

Supposed portrait of Arina Rodionovna, Pushkin’s nanny

What about Arina Rodionovna, you say? Loving, devoted, patient? You know, Arina Rodionovna was a serf who was taken into the Ganiballov-Pushkin family in her youth. She raised several generations of the poet’s relatives to the detriment of her own four children, whom she was not even allowed to feed.
