Autumn houseplant care

The last warm summer days have flown by and ahead of us is a beautiful and, at the same time, difficult for indoor plants, autumn time! The change of seasons has no less effect on indoor plants than on all living things and plants in nature, despite the fact that they are “under the roof”.

It gets colder outside the window and daylight hours are significantly reduced – new environmental conditions trigger new biological rhythms in plants, after the vegetative growth stage comes the dormant stage, which imposes other requirements for care. nine0003

It’s time for everyone to go home!

Summer is the time for “green” balconies! If your plants spent this summer outdoors, then it’s time to return them “under the roof.” Most of our domestic “green” pets are tropical inhabitants of the equatorial belt, who do not tolerate low air temperatures. Therefore, as soon as nighttime temperatures drop below 12-13 degrees Celsius, it is urgent to return all the “greens” home! Before returning, carefully inspect each for the presence of pests. Even if you don’t find anything, it’s still best to give all your plants a small spa – a warm shower and treatment with any biopesticide (for example, neem oil). nine0003

Closer to the light!

In autumn, the days become shorter, the sky is increasingly covered with clouds, the angle of incidence of the sun’s rays also changes – even hot southern windowsills, on which only succulents and cacti could survive in summer, become an excellent place for plants that prefer diffused sunlight with the beginning of autumn! Autumn is the time when you need to do a little rearrangement and rotation of the “greens” in your apartment. There is only one principle – we move everyone closer to the light source. Remember to rotate the plants every week with a new side facing the sun so that the foliage grows evenly on each side and the plant does not lean to one side. nine0003

We water abundantly, but rarely!

The sun is getting smaller, which means that plants receive less food and, accordingly, their growth slows down. During the dormant period, plants should be watered abundantly, but not as often as in spring and summer. The frequency of watering each type of plant in winter is indicated on our tags, which we supply to each plant. Be sure to water the plant until the water flows into the pan so that the earthen ball is completely saturated with moisture. After that, remove excess water from the pan so that the roots do not rot. nine0003

Raise the humidity!

We always look forward to the start of the heating season, because it gets so damp and cold outside! But hot batteries are fraught with danger and stress for our moisture-loving “green pets” – a sharp drop in air humidity leads to falling and drooping foliage, dryness and spots on the leaves. Plants, as it were, signal to us that they are uncomfortable in these conditions and that they urgently need to save the situation. There are many ways to increase the humidity of the air – put the plants on a pallet with wet expanded clay / pebbles or use humidifiers. The second method is more efficient and beneficial for us, because it is also useful for us to breathe moist air, in which the concentration of bacteria, viruses and allergens is much lower than in dry air. We also advise grouping plants with similar conditions together – moisture-loving ferns located nearby will maintain a stable microclimate and “take care of each other.” Try not to put plants very close to heaters and avoid drafts. nine0003

Stop feeding!

With the beginning of the cold period, all plants go into a dormant phase – growth slows down or stops. At this time, the plants do not need additional nutrition, there is enough light and water to safely survive the winter. Top dressing is resumed with the beginning of spring.

Leaf fall is normal!

As soon as we returned our “green” pets back “under the roof”, they begin to actively shed some of the old foliage. No need to sound the alarm – this is normal, because they adapt to the lack of sunlight in the apartment. Try to help the plants by removing a few old leaves yourself. New ones will grow in their place, and your pet will retain its thick and lush hair. nine0003

We are doing the last transplants!

Most likely, one of your “green” pets has grown significantly this summer under bright sunlight and needs a bigger “house”. Autumn is the time when it is advisable to carry out the last seasonal transplants.
This of course does not apply to newly purchased plants, they always need to be transplanted into a permanent pot and substrate, regardless of the season!

Let’s get creative!

All plants “returned home”, which means it’s time to find them a permanent place in your apartment for the autumn-winter period.
