They are patient about some of the habits he has that might frustrate other caretakers (picky eating, trouble sharing, crying at drop off). Eboni Robinson, his main teacher, is an absolutely rockstar. I can’t emphasize how good she is with my son, and how much she goes above and beyond. He loves seeing her everyday. Della Olupona is another rockstar in his classroom. She knows so much about child development, and also always makes a point to ask me how my day was at pick up time. They’re truly outstanding people and I feel very comfortable trusting them to care for my child everyday.

Why Bowie Matters

David Jones will forever remain in the history of pop culture as its most changeable hero. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, The Gaunt White Duke are just a few of his names and guises. But who was he really? What is the logic behind the succession of images and albums? What clues to his fate are hidden in the streets of his native Bromley, English cinema and texts by Mikhail Bakhtin and Gilles Deleuze?

British professor of cultural studies (and devoted fan) Will Brooker studied the artist’s work and conducted an unusual experiment: in one year he “lived” the career of David Bowie, imitating him down to the smallest detail, in order to better understand the motivations and character of the eternal chameleon.

Why Bowie Matters is a declaration of love and a guide to the genius of David Jones.

Brief history

The publishing house was founded in 2015 in Moscow by Alexei Dokuchaev and Mikhail Vrubel, who set the course for the “Individual” to publish “adventure” non-fiction literature. In 2017, a merger with the Bookmate company took place, within the framework of this cooperation, the Popcorn Books brand was created, thanks to which a new direction appeared – youth literature from foreign and domestic authors (but that’s a completely different story!). An interesting plot, a reflection of past experience and reflective authors – all this remains immutable. No wonder the “Individual” has developed a reputation as a translator of a wide variety of personal views and true stories – from the world of cinema, photography, dance, fiction, the surrounding life, music and journalism. Felix Sandalov, editor-in-chief, argues that it is very important for a publishing house to produce “saying books” that radically refute existing stereotypes.

Persian carpet of plots

As you have already understood, the assortment of the publishing house is motley, like a Persian carpet. These are guides for novice musicians, manuals on how not to lose yourself during repairs, and secret stories about the world wide web and hackers. There are also interdisciplinary studies, as well as books at the intersection of genres: for example, memoirs and journalism (“Nelli Bai. Profession: reporter”) or sociology and art (“Pina Bausch Dance Theater: The Art of Translation”). The personal involvement of both authors and readers is present. From afar, the stylish cover seduces, but inside it fascinates the non-triviality of the story and the hidden gifts of lived experience.

Why are we crazy about “Individual”?

We all subscribers are passionate fans of the literary experiences of directors published by The Individual: from Charlie Kaufman’s Ant to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Before costumed corporate parties, we study Will Brooker’s experiments in getting used to the role, and the next morning we put a cool volume of Shaughnessy Bishop-Stone called “Hangover” on our heads. And the voluminous work of Robert Garaev about Tatarstan “The Word of a Kid” has been coming to us for a year to read the same regular customer: here we feel completely interested and are afraid to imagine what will happen when the book is finished. Books of the “Individual” are in almost every department of our store, which indicates a balance between diversity and bright individuality. For this we love.
