Appearance:
The yellow mongoose has short and rounded ears, the tail is very fluffy. The color of the coat differs depending on the distribution area. The southern subspecies have a reddish-yellow coat, while the northern ones have a yellow-gray one. Some animals have a seasonal change of coat: in summer it is reddish, in winter it is paler. The underside of the body and the tip of the tail are white. In winter, the fur is long, thick and smooth, while in summer it is short and thin. On the front paws, 5 fingers each (the thumb is small and does not touch the ground when walking), on the hind legs – 4 each. The claws are not retractable. Females have 3 pairs of nipples.

Habitat:
Endemic to South Africa – found in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, southern Angola.

Lifestyle: Yellow mongooses are diurnal. They go into their sleeping burrows closer to sunset. These are excellent “burrowing machines”, but still prefer to occupy other people’s holes (mostly built by gophers or striders). Sometimes found in the same burrows with ground squirrels. They live in colonies in complex complexes of underground tunnels, interconnected, occupying an area of ​​​​up to 50 m2 or more. To hide the entrance to the hole, mongooses bury their excrement in secluded places. During the meal, they do not go far from the holes. They hunt alone or in pairs. Mongooses can move at high speed and are very agile. They rest and bask in the sun, standing vertically (in columns). At the slightest sign of danger, they go into burrows. When the animal is frightened, it growls and releases an odorous secret from its prianal glands. Yellow mongoose are social animals living in family groups of 5-20 individuals. The core of the colony is an adult breeding pair and their young, as well as sub-adult or adult pairs. The rest of the family members do not have close ties to the core.

Food:
The main part of the diet of the yellow mongoose is insects and their larvae (coleoptera, termites, locusts, ants), small mammals (mice), birds, reptiles and amphibians, cereals and seeds. Reproduction: Mating lasts 30-60 seconds, during which the male makes soft purring sounds while the female continuously bites or licks his ears and neck. The breeding season depends on the habitat – in South Africa in December-January, and in Botswana – throughout the year (with a peak birth of cubs in October-April). Puberty ends at one year of age. Pregnancy lasts up to 45-57 days. The female gives birth to 1-4 cubs in a hole devoid of any bedding. Lactation lasts up to 10 weeks, but from 6 weeks of age, the cubs already begin to try solid food.

Our pets: One yellow mongoose named Ryzhik lives in Swarm Creek. He got his name for the characteristic red color. The baby was artificially fed by the park’s specialists and looked like a miniature fox cub as a child. For his sociable and meek disposition, he became a favorite of workers. He has maintained his friendly attitude towards the staff to this day.
