Memorial Hermann The Woodlands is part of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, with more than a 110-year history of caring for the greater Houston area. Memorial Hermann is a 14-hospital system, which includes Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital; both are Level 1 Trauma Centers in Houston’s Texas Medical Center.

2019 Community Health Needs Assessment

As a part of providing Community Benefit to enhance the health and well-being of the residents of the Greater Houston area, Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center is required by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to identify the community’s health needs and strengths by conducting a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) to prioritize health issues, to provide a foundation for the development of a community health improvement plan, and to assist community organizations in their program planning. Parking Information

All parking on the campus of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands is free of charge. Surface parking is available off Pinecroft Drive and off the I-45 southbound feeder road. Visitors may use Parking Garage 2 (in front of MP2) and Parking Garage 3 (in front of MP3). Free valet parking is available on weekdays during peak visiting hours at the new South Tower, main hospital entrance and outside of Medical Plaza 4 (MPA).

Golf carts round the parking lots to pick up visitors and patients, bringing them to hospital entrances and to medical plaza office buildings. There is a smaller parking garage (Garage 1) in front of Medical Plaza 1 (MP1), but this is for patients using services in that building.

This is what the new protected area looks like in summer

A new specially protected natural area (SPNA) of local importance has been created in Perm – the Southern Forest Ecological Park. It is located between the Dynamo sports base and Bratskaya Street in the interfluve of the Bolshaya and Malaya Iva.

Dmitry Andreev, head of the city department for ecology and nature management, spoke about the creation of a new protected area. According to him, the area of the “Southern Forest” will be 218.7 hectares. Part of this territory was previously planned to be given for the construction of a zoo, but in the end a site in the Industrial District of Perm was chosen for it. Now the section between Dynamo and Bratskaya is being returned to the city forests.

— The site has a natural value: ecosystems of dark coniferous forests rare for the city, forests of high conservation value, high recreational value. The territory is actively used by the residents of the city of Perm for recreation and sports,” said Andreev. — This year we plan to develop a concept for the recreational and environmental development of the Southern Forest, aimed at developing recreation areas for residents and protecting valuable ecosystems.

There are 25 specially protected natural territories in Perm, of which two are of regional importance, 23 are of local importance. The total area is 13,235.3 hectares, or 16.6% of the city’s territory.

Previously, the valleys of the Danilikha and Yegoshikha rivers received the status of specially protected natural areas.

Reforestation projects in the USSR and Russia

In the USSR, special attention was paid to forestry. In many ways, care for him was associated with the acute problem of the devastation of fertile lands and famine. Solving this problem, the country not only cultivated crops. It was also necessary to strengthen the soil and retain moisture with the help of trees and shrubs. How was reforestation organized in the USSR? What is the relevance of the new project of the ECA Movement “Southern Forest Belt of Russia”?

Reforestation before the 1950s

In the 20th century, during the wars, the area of forests in the European part of the USSR decreased by 7-8 million hectares. This is almost twice the area of the Moscow region. Uncontrolled felling led to the fact that in 1925 in the western part of the USSR forests occupied only 6-7% of the total area. In the steppe and forest-steppe regions of the European part of the USSR (the Volga region, Western Kazakhstan, the North Caucasus, Ukraine), droughts began to recur, and dry winds, hot dry winds, more actively penetrated deep into the country from Kazakhstan and caused great damage to agriculture. drought is a matter of paramount importance. In August 1923, the Forest Code was put into effect in the USSR.

In accordance with the Constitution of the USSR and the Constitution of the RSFSR, forests are state property – the common property of all the Soviet people. Forests are the exclusive property of the state and are provided only for use (Forest Code of the RSFSR, Article 3).

In 1924, the first plan for the development of the country’s forestry was developed, which included: sowing seedlings, promoting the natural regeneration of the main tree species in each specific area, fixing the sands, and creating shelterbelts. Natural reforestation has worked well under conditions of narrow logging sites, horse skidding (i.e. transportation) of felled trees, when loggers try to preserve young trees, and when some mature trees are left in clearings for seed scatter. Preservation of the undergrowth leads to the fact that the period of forest cultivation on cuttings is reduced by 15-20 years.

Until 1928, Soviet power was actually limited to plans for the future. But in subsequent years, excluding wartime, she made serious efforts to restore forests. So, from 1928 to 1937 in the USSR, forests were annually restored and planted on an area of 100-120 thousand hectares. True, a large percentage of seedlings did not take root. There are many reasons for this: there were not enough good quality machines and forest specialists, not the best planting material was grown, there was no motivation on the collective farms to take care of the seedlings.

In order to solve the problem of poor planting material, in 1934 foresters V.G. Capper, A.P. Pashkov and A.M. Salouhin developed industry standards for pine, spruce and larch seeds and their germination. And in 1939, the Soviet government introduced standards for the production of high-quality seedlings for teams involved in reforestation. Monetary payments were introduced for compliance with the norms. Brigades in the USSR began to be responsible for the entire cycle of growing seedlings.

In the 1950s, a new planting method appeared – aerial seeding. Seeds were scattered with a special device from an aircraft flying at a distance of 30-40 meters above the ground. But this method gave at that time a very low effect – on average, 37% of the seeds took root.

How nature was changed

In 1949-1965, the so-called “Stalin’s plan for the transformation of nature” was planned to be implemented on a gigantic territory of 120 million hectares. It was planned to create protective plantings on an area of more than 6 million hectares: forest belts, plantings on ravines and sands, and on open areas in forestry enterprises. The Agrolesproekt Institute and 500 forest protection stations were established. The plan could not be realized only with the help of the hands of the workers and peasants. Therefore, the forestry and the forestry sector received a large number of new tractors, tractor plows, forest planters, and seeders. Forest protection stations, in addition to planting thousands of hectares of forest, were engaged in the construction of industrial and residential buildings, created workers’ settlements with all the necessary infrastructure.

Until 1965, forestry enterprises planted forests on an area of 2.3 million hectares of oak, birch, ash, poplar, common and small-leaved elm, Norway and Tatar maple, white acacia, Siberian larch, linden, pine and even mountain ash. Thanks to this plan, fruit trees began to grow in the plantings – apple trees, pears, cherries, apricots. However, the plan was not implemented 100 percent. Many plantings perished: growing fruit trees in the steppe is no easier than turning back the rivers.

The total length of protective forest belts was 5320 km. This is the length of the road route from Stavropol to Irkutsk. The direction of these strips was chosen in such a way that they retained water in the fields and served as barriers against dry winds that were terrible for agriculture. The longest forest belts ran along the following sections:

1) along the banks of the Ural River from the Caspian Sea to the Chelyabinsk region – three strips from each bank, 60 m wide, 1080 km long;

2) on both banks of the Don River from Voronezh to Rostov – two lanes 60 m wide and 920 km long;

3) on both banks of the Volga River from Saratov to Astrakhan – two lanes 100 m wide and 900 km long.

Such prominent agronomists as V.V. Dokuchaev, P.A. Kostychev, V.R. Williams. They discovered the grass-field farming system, which allows increasing the growth of grass (forage base for livestock) at times and restoring soil fertility. This system included, for example, the application of fertilizers to large fodder areas and the development of irrigation through the construction of ponds and reservoirs. About 4 thousand reservoirs were created in the USSR. After the implementation of the plan, grain yields increased by 25-30%, vegetables – by 50-75%, herbs – by 100-200%.

“Southern Forest Belt of Russia” – a new global project

Nowadays, Russia needs to solve the problem of desertification, steppe formation and dry winds again in order to preserve the fertile southern lands, support agriculture and contribute to the restoration of nature. To solve this problem, the Plant a Forest project team launched a large-scale project called the Southern Forest Belt of Russia. The forests that will appear as a result of this project will contribute to the creation of a comfortable and soft microclimatic environment, to the reduction of wind force at the level of the surface air layer. By planting drought-tolerant tree species, they can help even out average daily temperatures.

If this problem of steppe growth is not solved, then in the near future it may exacerbate the problem of food security, which will lead to an increase in social and economic tension.
The project “Southern Forest Belt of Russia” differs in concept from the project of seventy years ago in terms of forests. The Soviet project did not have a forest strip 1 km wide and 8000 km long. It did not affect Siberia, and the “Southern Forest Belt of Russia” will affect not only the central part of Russia and the Urals, but also the east of the country. The forest belt, according to the plan of the ECA Movement, will run from the Rostov region to the Republic of Buryatia and will occupy 800,000 hectares.
