  • As new schools are built, the Fayette County Board of Education’s School Zoning Committee considers changes in attendance boundaries to even out the student population. This work typically involves parents, teachers, FCPS administrators, two school board members, a district Equity Council representative, a city planning official, a home builder, and other community stakeholders. The committee’s meetings are open to the public, and community input is welcome throughout the process.

Project idea

An interesting look at schoolchildren’s acquaintance with world geography is presented in this design project. The positioning of the various continents of the Earth occurs through the world famous mountain formations. Tops and peaks are unique objects to study in their own right. Through them, you can understand a lot about the history, culture, beliefs of various peoples inhabiting the Earth. In addition, the symbol of a high mountain successfully correlates with the metaphor of education as a process. The mountain inspires to reach the top, that is, it awakens interest in learning, symbolizes the desire for success in life.

All mountain peaks have a clear geographical reference by floors and are grouped in different parts of the world. The painting is four-level and includes a neutral background and color layers that divide each mountain formation into three main parts: wooded hills, the rock itself and the glacier. This allows you to make the painting more voluminous. The silhouettes of the ridges correspond as closely as possible to their real relief on a scale of 1:3000. Each floor has its own leading color of the painting, but all of them are tied to the main theme. Next to the name of each peak, we marked its height above sea level.

This interior solution allows zoning the school space in an original form, opens up wide opportunities for holding events and open lessons right in the halls of the educational institution. The project is ideal for schools with in-depth study of the humanities, as well as for any school that pays attention to expanding the horizons of its students.

Rhythm by floors

On the ground floor we have breathtaking views of the famous African mountain ranges. That is why the yellow-beige palette of the savannah scorched by the sun was chosen for the entrance group. The wall painting on the second floor tells about the mountain peaks of North and South America and is done in green and pale brown tones. And the cool turquoise third floor is dedicated to Eurasia, and this is no coincidence: it is on our continent that the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest, is located. On the same floor, we can see the famous mountain formations of Russia.

Development of the idea (rhythm on the floor)

The very structure of the ridges, their ascending broken outlines set the rhythm of the entire composition. The peaks are the climax of each section of space, they fill the longest corridors and spacious halls. The background and support for them are the flatter silhouettes of mountains and landscapes, which fill the space of the floor with conventional geometric shapes. In areas where visual accents are not needed, the intensity of painting is reduced.

Solution on the stairs

On the stairs, we deliberately abandoned the three-level execution of mountain ranges and limited ourselves to a two-dimensional flat picture, only figuratively hinting at the main theme of the painting. This is done so that schoolchildren do not have a desire to linger for a long time in the passages and look at the wall painting. However, we left color matching to make it easier to navigate between floors.

Solution in the bathrooms

Here, wall painting is present as a support for the entire floor ensemble, but does not come to the fore. It only slightly refreshes the interior of the restrooms without attracting much attention.
