    How are school zones determined?

The official zone boundary for each elementary, middle, and high school is established by the Atlanta Board of Education.  Atlanta Public Schools (APS) uses the legal address indicated in tax records for the residence. Students are to attend the school in the zone in which is located the bona fide residence of their parents/legal guardians unless they have administrative approval to enroll elsewhere. A student’s school attendance zone is determined by the bona fide primary residence of the custodial parent/legal guardian.  Locate your zoned neighborhood school using our SCHOOL ZONE LOCATOR.

Frederick (Fred) Newhall Woods (pictured) may soon be out of prison. This 70-year-old man was convicted of kidnapping children from a school bus in California in 1976. After 46 years behind bars and multiple parole denials, his 18th request was this time approved by the parole board. However, the last word remains with the governor of California, who will make the final decision. Fred Woods, having committed an unimaginable crime, entered the history of the United States along with two more of his accomplices.

On July 15, 1976, a school bus with driver Ed Ray and 26 children aged 5 to 14 was taken hostage. All the little passengers were students at a school in Chowchilla, California, and were driving on a country road in Madera County. Around 16:00 they were destined to meet with their tormentors. They were returning from visiting the swimming pool at the exhibition center and, of course, had no idea about the tragedy that they had to go through. Masked kidnappers forced them off the bus and drove them for 11 hours in two different vans. Then, as soon as they arrived at the location chosen by the three suspects, they were put into a furniture van that had been buried in a quarry at Livermore. Later, their bus is found empty, hidden in the bushes in a ditch and covered with bamboo branches.
The find terrified the children’s families.

For 16 hours the children had to endure a real hell. Sixteen hours, during which the victims, buried alive, did everything to get out, digging the ground, until the young 14-year-old Michael Marshall and the driver managed to get to the surface and contact the emergency services. After that, they were all dragged out and early in the morning of July 17, 1976, returned by bus under police protection, safe and sound, to Chowchilla. An investigation at the time revealed that what became one of the most famous kidnapping stories in the US was partly inspired by the movie Dirty Harry. The plan of the three criminals was to keep the children captive in a van converted into an underground bunker until they received a $5 million ransom.

After taking the children to safety, the police returned to their burial site and found that the van had been left there as early as November 1975. It was on land owned by Frederick Nickerson Woods, whose son Fred Newhall Woods IV, then aged 24, had gone missing. The police put Woods himself on the wanted list, as well as his fellow accomplices, 24-year-old James Schoenfeld and his 22-year-old brother Richard Schoenfeld, sons of a well-known orthopedic doctor.

The youngest of the trio of kidnappers surrendered himself to the Auckland police a few days later. His brother was arrested in the city of Menlo Park (California), when he was also about to surrender. As for Fred Woods, he was arrested on 29July in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada), where he managed to escape.
A year later, in 1977, three young men who pleaded guilty to kidnapping for ransom were sentenced to life in prison. In June 2012, Richard Schoenfeld was released on parole, and in August 2015, his brother was also released on parole. Only Fredric Woods is still in the San Luis Obispo County Jail.

But these releases of criminals do not please the victims. In 2015, several of them told CNN that they still feel traumatized by those events. Darla Neil, who was 10 years old at the time, said she had been constantly suffering from “severe anxiety” all these years, which made her life unbearable. “Sometimes I felt so bad that I had to quit my job. I convince myself that I have to get over it. But look at me, how lost I am, ”says Darla Neal. “They stole our childhood. The whole life turned out to be broken, ”in turn, Jodie Heffington-Medrano, who at the time of those events was also 10 years old, admits. Jennifer Brown described her life to Fox News this way: “I’m now 50 years old, but I still have panic attacks, even when I’m in the car with my husband.” And in an interview with SBC TV in 2020, she admitted that during the abduction she felt “like an animal going to the slaughter.” Larry Park, 6, at the time of the kidnapping, also recalled the nightmare moments he experienced at the time on CBS: “Their eyes looked blank. It was like watching death.
