Direct Hire: What It Means & How It Works

What is direct hiring?

Direct hire jobs are typically long-term, salaried positions with benefits. A direct hire is a position that reports directly to the employer, not to an agency. After accepting a job offer, a candidate becomes an employee of the hiring company and goes on their payroll and benefits immediately.

Candidates for direct hiring may be recruited by an agency or directly by a company. When you use an agency to fill a position, it’s known as direct placement hiring. The agency handles recruitment, but when a job offer is made the candidate becomes a permanent employee of the employer.

Pros and cons

Is direct hiring right for you?

Yes, if your goal is to add permanent staff and attract qualified employees who want to feel like part of your team. There are costs whether you do a direct hire or use contract hiring, so your decision will be a matter of weighing the value each would bring against the expense. Here are some considerations.

Benefits of direct hire

  • ✔ Attract a broader pool of qualified candidates, many of whom are more likely to choose a permanent position over a contract job.

  • ✔ The long-term nature of the position leads to higher commitment and employee retention.

  • ✔ Direct placement hiring using the services of a recruitment firm means you don’t have to use your own resources to source and screen candidates – unless you want to read 200 resumes to find 10 good ones!

  • ✔ A recruitment firm that serves your industry not only has access to a large pool of qualified candidates, it has the expertise to screen them to find the best prospects for your company’s needs far more quickly than you could do it in-house.

  • ✔ The new hire is on your payroll immediately, so you save the costs of contract hiring.

Disadvantages of direct hire

  • ■ Cost. A one-time fee that is a percentage of the employee’s first-year salary is typical, plus ongoing costs associated with putting the position on your payroll.

  • ■ Relocation expenses. For a permanent position you may find your perfect hire in a location far from yours, which means getting your employee and his/her family moved and settled.

  • ■ Longer hiring process than for contract work.

The direct hire process

  1. 1. Source candidates from networks. Agencies have extensive networks beyond the typical HR department in a single company, so you’ll have a much broader pool from which to choose, which makes it more likely that you’ll find the perfect candidate.

  2. 2. Review applications and screen candidates. Ensure that not only are all applicants qualified, but they’re a good fit for the company culture.

  3. 3. Submit applicants for final interview. Your agency will give you insights they have gathered so you have all the background you need to make a good decision.

  4. 4. Make an offer and fill the position. Congratulations! You have a new employee.

Guide Overview

Direct hire in the workplace

Direct-hire jobs are usually the most desirable job types and mean that an employee will be working permanently with benefits for an organization. These jobs come with many benefits, including a secure position and a better opportunity to further your career. Here we explore what direct hire means, examples of jobs that offer this type of position, benefits of direct hires, and tips for finding a direct-hiring job.

Direct hire defined

Direct hiring is when a person is offered a permanent job with a company without the use of a third party, such as a staffing agency. Other types of positions include contract-to-hire, contract hiring, temporary hiring, and part-time hiring, all of which do not include a full-time, permanent job. Companies that directly hire individuals will often put more investment into these employees than employees who are working on a temporary or part-time basis.

When a person is directly hired for a position, they are hired by the company itself rather than a staffing agency. While a staffing agency may have initially connected you with the position, you’ll report to the company after accepting the offer.

Permanent positions often take longer during the process of hiring because the company is making a long-term investment in the person. Whereas part-time and temporary positions are often filled quickly, it can take weeks or months to fill a permanent job.

Companies directly hire for positions for several reasons, including:

  • To find candidates for executive or management-level jobs.
  • To elicit more loyalty from permanent employees.
  • To find higher-quality talent to fill positions.
  • To remove the middleman and simplify the hiring process.

Examples of direct-hire jobs

There are several positions that candidates are directly hired for more frequently than others. These positions include:

  • Management and executive positions: Companies typically want employees in executive and management positions to stick around for a while, so they will directly hire these employees to foster trust and promote longevity.
  • Positions that require a high level of education or knowledge: Some positions, such as those in the engineering, science, technology, and mathematics industries, require a high level or education or training to perform. Many employers want to keep these employees in their positions long-term to avoid having to find someone else with as much experience or education to replace them.

Benefits of direct hiring

There are several benefits of being directly hired for a position, including:

  • They offer a permanent and secure position with a company.
  • They often come with benefits packages that include health insurance, paid-time-off, sick days, and other attractive offerings.
  • You have an increased opportunity to pursue your career goals in a permanent job.
  • You and the company time and money from searching for new employment on a regular basis.
  • Direct hiring offers a great opportunity to build on your experience in one position.

Tips for finding and getting direct-hire jobs

The following are several tips to consider to help you find permanent jobs:

  • Work with a recruiter. Some recruiting companies specialize in helping candidates find jobs that are directly hiring. Working with a recruiter can save you a significant amount of time during the job search and help you get matched with jobs that are most related to your skills, experience, education, and interests. Plus, most recruiting companies are free to use for people seeking employment, so you won’t have to pay anything throughout the process.
  • Attend employer recruiting events. Larger companies will often host recruiting events or attend career fairs where they will offer top talent direct-hire packages. These are great places to discover new job opportunities and potentially get a job, or at least an interview, on the spot.
  • Apply directly to an organization’s website. If you find a permanent position available on a job search website, consider applying to the job directly on the company’s website rather than through the job listing. This could increase your chances of getting your application into the hands of the hiring recruiter and boost your likelihood of getting the job.
  • Look at a company’s social media. Some companies will post about open positions on their social media or LinkedIn page, giving those who follow the company early access to the position. Follow companies you’d like to work for and keep an eye out for any postings about permanent position openings.
  • Ask for referrals. When a company is looking to hire someone permanently in a position, they want to hire someone who is reputable and equipped to handle the job. Having someone refer you, such as a current employee, to the hiring manager is a great way to your foot in the door and interview for a permanent job.

Frequently asked questions about direct hires

Here are a few frequently asked questions related to permanent positions:

What are the other types of hiring?

There are several forms of hiring that you can participate in depending on your needs and preferences. The most common forms of hiring include:

  • Temporary: This is when a person fills a short-term need with an organization. For example, you may work for a company for three months to help it complete a project. Temporary hiring includes seasonal hiring, or hiring employees during busier seasons to accommodate increased business.
  • Contract: Contract hiring is when an employee works temporarily for a company based on a contract. For example, a company may hire an engineer for a 10-month contract, and after the 10 months is complete, the engineer will seek employment elsewhere.
  • Contract-to-hire: This type of hiring is when a company uses a temporary employee for a set amount of time and then offers them a permanent position based on their performance.

What does direct hiring mean in government positions?

This type of hiring means something entirely different in the federal government. Government entities consider direct hiring to be when the entity requests a direct-hire authority to select candidates for jobs without first going through the typical hiring process. This happens most often when there is a small amount of candidates for a position or several positions or there is a major hiring need.

What Is Direct Hire? Definition, Examples, and Tips

The Pros and Cons of Direct Hire Staffing

What is Direct Hire Staffing?

Direct Hire Staffing, often referred to as permanent placement, headhunting or direct placement, is when a staffing firm recruits on a permanent add-to-staff position for a client.  The staffing firm or staffing agency takes lead on all recruitment activity, coordinating with the hiring team, and the client takes control of offers and onboarding as they identify the ideal candidate. The client will be the permanent employer of record.

This differs from temporary staffing and temp-to-hire staffing because contract positions often include a probationary period in which companies can test out employees before hiring them permanently. In many cases, companies use varying staffing services, and often don’t realized the direct benefit of Direct Hire staffing.

The Benefits of Direct Hire Staffing

Quality of Candidates

Using direct hire placement attracts the top talent to your open position because candidates are being head hunted from jobs they are currently working, meaning they’re employed and likely a higher quality candidate. Your team might be afraid of permanent placement fees, but will save money in the long run by increasing efficiency on the hiring process and hiring stronger, quality candidates that reduce turnover and time to train; saving you more soft dollars than hard.

Staffing firms cut out the need to sieve through mountains of resumes and weed out the candidates that otherwise won’t be a good fit. Staffing firms have their recruiters source and interview passive candidates so when they present the candidates to the clients, the candidates presented are short-listed and should be upwards of 80% the perfect fit. Although it may be a slower process, the efficiency and quality hired will delight your team.

Retention

In many cases, Direct Hire placements perform at higher success rate because they feel stable and invested in their career. Direct hire roles are attractive to candidates, and they have a higher commitment to work and performance, proving the investment in their employer made to their employer.

By working with a staffing firm, you are able to work with the recruiter to set parameters on the “must haves” and “nice-to-haves” for the recruiting process, which narrows greatly the irrelevant candidates from the hiring process and eliminates risk of a new hire quitting because it wasn’t a good fit. Additionally, most recruitment agreements include a guarantee period in which if the candidate doesn’t work out because of something on their end, or your end, the recruiter will replace the hire free of charge.

Peace of Mind

Hiring permanent employees saves companies time and money while ensuring you have the best person for your opening. Staffing firms offer a guarantee period on your new hire, acting as insurance you made a good hiring decision. This means that if for some reason the candidate ends up not being a good fit then you have “X” days to refill the position with no additional cost. If your current staffing firms does not offer this, I would strongly suggest revisiting and ensuring this is in the contract.

What are the disadvantages of Direct Hire Staffing?

Slower Process

As mentioned above, the process may be slower than temporary or contract to hire services. There is additional time that is associated with sourcing passive candidates and allowing for adequate notice for employed candidates to make a transition. The client may take extra time with making a decision before hiring to ensure the right skillset/cultural fit. Ultimately, set expectations on a realistic hiring timeline at the beginning of your search to ensure both the recruiter and hiring team are held accountable.

No Probational Period

A lot of clients/hiring managers like having the ability to have a “trail period” with a candidate. This makes them have the ability to see if the candidate would be a good fit for the role before making them a full-time employee. While a guarantee period does give you wiggle room on your fees paid, you will ultimately be the employer of record.

Employer of Record

Direct Hire staffing means once the candidate is hired, they are your employee. You take on the new hire expenses which include onboarding, training, benefits, insurance, etc. These costs are standard and should be noted in advance when making a new hire.

Partnering with the right staffing firm is critical to your success when using a third-party staffing supplier. Take your time to do your research on a company to find the right staffing firm for you. Suna Solutions has been offering direct hire staffing since 2008. Unlike other firms, we take time to get to your business goals and company culture so we can help make the fit for your roles. We request an intake meeting for every requisition requested and want to help you grow your organization successfully.

Camera rental is convenient. This service allows you to always have “the latest technology” at hand. You do not need to bear the cost of purchasing expensive equipment, to engage in the selection of related accessories. We took a comprehensive approach to this issue so that our customers can find everything they need in one place.

Rent a video camera or rent a camera, what to choose?

When choosing equipment for certain purposes, many people wonder what equipment is better to rent? Especially if the budget does not allow you to rent both a photo and video camera together. Of course, it is worth choosing a more priority shooting direction, despite the fact that modern SLR cameras also shoot good video, nevertheless, their purpose is photography. The reasons for this are poor focusing when shooting video, a large matrix, fast battery consumption, manual zoom control. Of course, professional cameras are quite suitable for shooting amateur videos, but for shooting important events, celebrations, you should definitely opt for a video camera.

Why rent a photo and video camera when you can buy it?

Photo and video camera rental – allows you to save significant money, especially if you need a one-time use of equipment for a specific project. The concept of renting things came to us from capitalist countries, where it is customary to count money. The formula is quite simple – “you use – you pay.” It is difficult to argue with the effectiveness of temporary use. But who wants to do this, here are a few facts:

– we are buying, which means we currently have big expenses, we take money from circulation
– we bought, we are thinking about arranging a storage space
– we store it, which means we need to ensure security
– we use it, therefore the equipment is losing value, depreciation occurs
– for a long we use it – equipment becomes morally obsolete, new models come out, old ones lose much in price and capabilities

What are the advantages of renting cameras and camcorders?

– we pay only when we use it
– we choose any model of equipment, depending on the upcoming tasks
– we don’t think where to store and how to guard
– depreciation of equipment is not terrible
– any modern model and novelty is available to you
– responsible for the performance of equipment supplier

Almost every person has items used in his life a couple of times and lying on the far shelf. However, there comes a time when the acquisition of this or that thing becomes a necessity. But this time, a rental service can come to the rescue. After all, before spending a significant amount on a good product, you can test it and determine the appropriateness of the purchase, technical properties, and personal compatibility.

Rental of video and photo cameras at the Kinozavod company.

Direct box office advertising

Direct advertising is the simplest type of advertising on the radio, which consists in the fact that live during pauses between musical compositions or between and within programs, commercials are broadcast in commercials. This is the least expensive type of advertising on the radio with fairly large budgets for radio advertising. The most popular for placement were radio commercials with a timing of 20-30 seconds.
