#Work4UN: UN Volunteers | United Nations

The UN is the world’s largest universal international organization with representation in 193 countries and 37,000 employees. The UN inspires people from all over the world to join its ranks to preserve peace, advance human rights, and justice, equality and development.

Finding a job with the organization may seem like a daunting task, but because the scope of its operations is global and multifaceted, there are many options for candidates with a variety of educational backgrounds and professional backgrounds.

UNAI has developed the #Work4UN series to help you learn about the UN, its structure and some of the most accessible opportunities to become part of the organization. In the last article in this series, you will learn about the UN internship program. Today’s article is the fifth in a series and is dedicated to UN Volunteers.

Who are UN Volunteers?

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) is a program that helps promote peace and development through volunteering around the world. This program, run by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), brings together qualified, highly motivated professionals with a good knowledge base who work in various UN agencies, and promotes the values and global recognition of volunteerism.

In 2018, there were 7,201 UN Volunteers worldwide, and 81% of them were from the Global South. This program is directly responsible for the actual recruitment and assignment of volunteers who, with their skills and talent, contribute to UN activities in the field, at regional agencies and at headquarters, while gaining UN professional experience.

Volunteer work is a great opportunity for students and professionals to engage in important tasks, educate themselves in the spirit of global citizenship and develop useful skills. With their knowledge and enthusiasm, UN Volunteers contribute to the promotion of the goals and principles of the UN, as well as to the principle of multilateralism and sustainability through concrete practical work.

Application process

There are two main types of volunteer opportunities: volunteering abroad and in your own country. In both cases, the application process is the same: those interested in becoming UN Volunteers must first register on the Volunteer Management Application website and fill out a profile, which will be added to the “List of Highly Qualified Personnel from Around the World”. It is a list of people interested in the program. It is necessary to provide as many details as possible regarding relevant qualifications, skills and professional experience.

In accordance with the rules and regulations of the UN Volunteer Programme, the minimum age for volunteers for overseas assignments is 25 years and for national assignments is 22 years. Basic requirements include a university degree or a technical diploma (a master’s degree may be required depending on the nature of the job), two years of relevant work experience and a good working knowledge of at least one of the 3 working languages of the UN Volunteer program – English, French and Spanish. No confirmation or test is required to test the level of knowledge of any of these languages

The UN Youth Volunteer Program is also looking for motivated and talented young people between the ages of 18 and 29 (applicants must be under the age of 29 for the duration of their career). The level of education and required experience varies depending on the assignment, but as a general rule, no one expects a candidate to have more than two years of work experience.

Once a candidate completes their profile, they are selected in two ways. In the first case, when assignments are loaded into the system, profiles matching the requirements of the assignment are searched in the list of candidates, and then qualified candidates are contacted. In the second scenario, a person can apply specifically for a “special announcement”, where it is usually necessary to engage a volunteer as soon as possible. All “special announcements” can be found here. Each position has a “Job Description”, which fully describes the details and requirements.

Selection Process

Whenever this program considers a potential individual for a national or international appointment, the candidate will receive an “Appointment Offer” and must send an email confirming their interest in the position. Next, the candidate’s name is entered on a list that is sent to the host agency. This agency, based on the assessment of various profiles, determines which candidates will be included in the final list or will go to the next stage of selection, where they will be carefully evaluated.

Usually assessed on the basis of the results of the written and oral stages. The written exam is not mandatory, but if necessary, it is conducted online. It includes the main technical questions within the scope of the assignment. With or without a written exam, the most important part of the selection process is the competency-based interview. The interview, lasting from 30 minutes to 1 hour, is conducted by a team of interviewers, consisting of staff from the UN Volunteers program and the host institution. Both the written exam and the interview are usually conducted in at least two languages.

Recruiting and Jobs

Successful candidates remain on the team and receive a Letter of Offer, which is conditionally subject to government, medical and security screening, as well as verification of the information provided in the profile, in particular recommendations from higher education institutions (including university diplomas) and recommendations from work. When all requirements are met, the offer must be signed to start the registration process. The last step is signing the actual contract.

Volunteers are governed by the Terms of Service for International and National UN Volunteers. Once selected, they receive online training and on-site training provided by the UN Volunteers program and the host institution. UN Volunteers are accorded the same privileges and immunities as UN officials required to carry out their duties. Although their selection process is carried out within the framework of the UN Volunteers program, in the day-to-day work of UN Volunteers, the activities of UN Volunteers are regulated and controlled directly by the host agency or partner.

Online volunteering

UNV also runs a special program for those who wish to contribute to the UN system remotely from home via PC or laptop. This program, called UNV Online Volunteering, allows more than 12,000 people to volunteer every year and apply their skills in research, graphic design, editing, translation and other work for various organizations in the UN structure, as well as non-governmental organizations. Interested candidates can register an account to join the global community of online volunteers and view all available opportunities.

UNAI conducted a series of interviews with UN staff to provide additional information about working for the UN and to enable staff to share their professional and personal views on working for the organization. In this video, Fiorella Triskritti, Assistant Political Affairs Officer at the UN Department of Political Affairs and Peacekeeping (DPPA), and Omar Hernandez, Communications Officer at the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC), talk about their work as former UN Volunteers and how this experience led them to a career at the UN.
