Teaching vocabulary in middle school can be quite challenging. Not only are the words becoming more difficult, but students are also becoming less and less interested.

Creating and finding activities that will help to keep kids engaged and excited about vocabulary instruction is vital to having a successful classroom community. It’s also important to switch up the activities from time to time.

Therefore, having a strong foundation of vocabulary activities in your teacher toolbox is crucial for a year of successful instruction of vocabulary.

1. Vocabulary Quilts

All-Russian verification works are one of the assessment procedures of the Unified System for Assessing the Quality of Education. The VPR in English in the 7th grade is designed to assess the level of mastering the course in this discipline by schoolchildren. Particular attention is paid to communication skills in various types of speech activity: speaking, reading, listening, as well as language competence.

Variants

Starting from 2023, each school will have an individual set of VPR variants in English. This is done in order to avoid leakage of tasks from one educational institution to others and the possibility of preparing answers to them in advance. So, all schools will be able to receive their control measuring materials on the eve of work through a personal account on the website of the Federal Institute for Educational Quality Assessment.

Variants are formed from the bank of tasks for the VPR and are the same for all schools in terms of complexity.

Assignments (demo versions)

VLOOKUP in English in 7 classes consists of 6 tasks: oral and written. Oral tasks include speaking and reading, and written tasks include listening, grammar and vocabulary. The time for performing oral tasks is strictly fixed and incorporated into the computer program. It takes into account the time for checking the sound quality of audio recordings and preliminary preparation for the task.

In task No. 1, you must carefully listen to the conversation or statements of people, and then insert words and phrases that are appropriate in context into the proposed text. The audio recording lasts about one and a half minutes and is played twice. Task number 2 is reading aloud in English. The text must be read as expressively and meaningfully as possible, pronouncing each word correctly. The student is given 1.5 minutes to prepare. During this time, it is recommended to review and whisper each sentence. Then, for the same time, it is required to read the text passage aloud using sound recording equipment.

3rd task tests the ability to speak a foreign language: the student must choose one of the three photographs, and then, using the provided plan, compose a coherent story based on it. For example, describe the person in the photo. The student’s voice is recorded by special equipment, and then the recording is checked by the teacher. It assesses the vocabulary, pronunciation, lexical and grammatical skills of a seventh grader.

Task No. 4 is aimed at testing the ability to understand the main meaning of the read text. Here it is necessary to establish correspondences between the five texts and their themes. Task number 5 tests knowledge of English grammar. After reading the text, the student needs to insert words in the correct grammatical form instead of gaps.

In task No. 6, you need to read the text and insert words from the list that are suitable from the point of view of vocabulary in terms of vocabulary.

Preparation PR, you need to pay special attention to vocabulary and grammar. They are necessary in order to, in addition to the correct pronunciation and understanding of words, be able to correctly build sentences.

The best way to develop grammar skills is to do as many exercises as possible. They should be different in complexity and grammatical constructions, and also contain the simplest examples and situations. And to expand your vocabulary, there is only one advice – practice! It is important to communicate as much as possible, to correspond, read and write essays in a foreign language. This is the only way to speak English, because words and grammatical constructions are the basis of the language.

Reading is not only a fluent pronunciation of the written text. Reading is also oral speech, therefore, in it, as in speaking, sounds and intonations are important, that is, phonetics. For reading and pronunciation skills, of course, multi-day practice is also important. But it is more convenient to train like this: first listen to the text several times, then repeat it after the speaker and then read it. This will require combined materials, such as textbooks with discs, when some of the exercises are translated into audio format. With this approach, three skills are worked out at once: reading, pronunciation and listening comprehension.

Evaluation criteria

For task No. 1, a student can receive a maximum of 5 points: 1 point for each correctly established correspondence. Successful completion of task No. 2 is estimated at 2 points, and task No. 3 – at 8 points. Tasks 4, 5 and 6 are worth 5 points each. The number of points awarded for these tasks depends on the number of correctly selected answers.

In total, 30 points can be obtained for the VPR in English in the 7th grade. According to the recommendation of Rosobrnadzor, the primary scores are converted into regular school grades on the following scale:

from 0 to 12 points – score “2”;
from 13 to 20 points – score “3”;
from 21 to 26 points – score “4”;
from 27 to 30 points – score “5”.

Valeria Volkovets, English teacher of the first qualification category; professional experience 13 years :

– Successful completion of the VPR in English in the 7th grade, in my opinion, requires knowledge of the language at a level not lower than A2. That is, the student should be able to talk about himself, conduct a conversation on various everyday topics (interests, food, weather, cinema, work, and so on), confidently read and understand the speech of native speakers.

To prepare for the listening task, you need to listen to as much English as possible. These can be movies, audiobooks, or podcasts. However, it is important not just to include foreign material as a background, but to listen to sentences, memorize words and extract the main meaning.

The purpose of reading assignments, as a rule, is not the understanding of every word or the literal translation of the entire text into Russian. It is necessary to extract the main essence of the passage in them, therefore, as a preparation, one should read more, find the main idea of the texts, its key phrases and key words.

To prepare for the task with the description of the picture, I advise you to prepare templates in advance, which you can rely on during the test work. This will help you not to get confused, not to miss important details and keep within 1.5 minutes.

As for grammar, you need to repeat plural nouns, comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives, personal and possessive pronouns, the correct form of the verb to be in the present and past tense.

The last task is one of the most difficult in the test work. It often contains similar-sounding words with different meanings, such as then and than. To successfully complete this task, you need to remember as many homophones and homographs as possible, work on expanding your vocabulary in general, and perform vocabulary exercises.
