Alternate antonym version: Play the game brainstorming words that mean the opposite of the word that was named.
Affix Activity: Using newspapers, magazines, cookbooks, or storybooks, have the child search for words with a targeted prefix or suffix, writing the words found on a piece of paper. Once several words have been found, work together to break the words into the affix (prefix or suffix) and root word and explain what the word means (e.g., “I found the word unthinkable! If I break it into the root and affixes, it is un-think- able. That means that if something is unthinkable, you are not able to think of it.”).
Word Categories: Play a word association game with your child. Call out a category name, and take turns brainstorming other words that make you think of the category word (e.g., “The category is weather.” “Thunderstorm!” “Snow!” “Cumulus Clouds!” “Typhoon!). Afterward, have the child sort the words into other categories, based on their similarities. Have the child explain what is similar about all of the words in their new categories (e.g., “I put train, monorail, boats, and strollers in the same category because they are all types of transportation people use at theme parks.”).
Sharing Our Writing: Consider connecting your child with a relative or pen-pal as a meaningful opportunity for your child to practice their writing skills. This could be through email or hand-written letters. Encourage your child to add descriptive words throughout and to incorporate new vocabulary they have been learning.
H, H, & H: Take notice of the three unique word types listed below while the child is reading or while you read to them. Isolate the word and discuss how variations can differ in spelling, pronunciation, and meaning.

How to quickly replenish your English vocabulary: ways and tips

- 3 tips on how to quickly improve vocabulary
Many people who are starting to learn a foreign language are interested in how to quickly replenish their English vocabulary. Doing this is not as easy as it seems. However, there are special techniques that greatly facilitate the process of memorizing words.
How to learn words correctly to increase vocabulary
Linguists claim that English has the most extensive vocabulary. At the same time, people, no matter how high their level, constantly replenish their vocabulary. As a rule, these are completely new words. But from time to time people learn other meanings of already known ones. But what is the main advantage of an extensive vocabulary? First of all, a person begins to speak more fluently and it is much easier for him to express his thoughts. It is for this reason that new words need to be learned daily.
Of course, if a person often speaks with native speakers, then this process occurs automatically. But residents of Russia or other countries where they do not speak English should not despair. Each person has the opportunity to independently create conditions for himself that allow him to develop more quickly. Experts offer at least four ways to replenish vocabulary, which have shown themselves as well as possible in practice.
To see a positive effect, you need to practice every day.
First of all, you need to get a dictionary. As a rule, in English lessons or courses, a person hears a lot of unfamiliar words. Of course, you won’t be able to remember everything right away. For this reason, you should get yourself a separate notebook and write down all new words there along with the translation. Ideally, you should add a few examples of phrases with unfamiliar vocabulary.
This notebook can be used in your spare time. For example, on the way to school or work. But how many words to write down in one lesson? The best option is five pieces. But they must be repeated daily so that they are deposited in memory. This must be done until the words are included in the active vocabulary.
Active vocabulary is a list of words that a person regularly uses in his speech.
If you are visual, then in addition to translation, you can draw some picture or write down synonyms. However, keeping a notebook is just one of the techniques for increasing vocabulary.
But how else can you expand your vocabulary? You can use “daily phrases”. There are many sites where set phrases, phrasal popular English verbs and a lot of other useful information are published every day. Most often, they are supplemented with pictures or graphic images, which greatly facilitates the memorization process for visuals and kinesthetics. These pages also have explanations in Russian, so there will definitely not be any problems with learning.
It is these dropouts that often help to add five new words every day in a notebook. Most often, such phrases are not pronounced in English lessons or courses, but they help to make speech more free. If the level of language proficiency is high enough, then the person will approach the level of native speakers.
If you look into various online dictionaries, you can always find the section “Word of the Day”. Most often there you can find synonyms for the most popular words. Their knowledge will help you speak English more confidently, write articles, essays and much more. If you subscribe to such pages, then you can think of information about the word of the day for electronic use.
How can I improve my English vocabulary without too much effort? For this purpose, you can always use a special program. It’s called Anki. The app has a lot of benefits. First of all, you can use cards, the settings of which are quite diverse. Another useful feature is synchronization. Also, do not forget about Multimedia support and the ability to customize the learning algorithm. In this application, you can use ready-made flash cards that other users have already created. They can be supplemented with illustrations or translation of words into their native language.
There is one more advantage: squats with words that you have already learned will be displayed extremely rarely. And vice versa. If the words are difficult or new, then they will pop up as often as possible until they are remembered. The program can easily be synchronized with other applications that you use to learn the language.
Ways to expand your vocabulary
How to increase your vocabulary of English words without making any extra effort?
First of all, you should try to watch TV programs and news. The main thing is to choose what will suit your interests and age. Often news programs or films are accompanied by subtitles, so you can easily replenish your vocabulary. In addition, the speech of native speakers helps to develop the auditory channel of perception.
It is better to watch programs or films on DVD or via the Internet, so that at any time you can pause and write out an unknown word or practice pronunciation. If the context does not make it possible to understand what kind of word it is, then you can always find the translation in the dictionary. Programs that affect the professional sphere have a special effect. It’s best to watch videos about your current or future job to learn the terminology. Feature films also had a positive effect, but they are much more fearful than broadcasts. Not everyone has a few free hours for this.
If you still don’t know how to improve your English vocabulary, you can try reading more. And it is not necessary to pay attention to books or newspapers. Do not forget about comics, song translations, advertisements, etc. In fact, reading is considered to be the most accessible method of vocabulary replenishment. Now there is even an opportunity to pick up books that will match your language level.
At the same time, it is not at all necessary to break away from reading every time and look at the meaning of a new word. You can just highlight it. And when the chapter, for example, is finished, the words can be written down in a notebook and an explanation can be added.
News articles are also good for expanding vocabulary. In addition, you will be aware of current events in the world. But not all publications are aimed at giving you new information. Some just give you the opportunity to relax morally and have a little fun.
How to improve English vocabulary? Of course, this can be done by communicating with other people! However, it is not at all necessary to live in English-speaking countries for this. With the help of the Internet, you can easily communicate with people from all over the world. Moreover, you can work out not only the ability to write in English, but also pronunciation using voice messages. In this case, you will be able to listen to the speech of the native speaker and get used to it little by little.
In addition, you can join groups and communicate with people who are also learning foreign languages. With them, you will learn how to confidently express your thoughts. Of course, no one is safe from mistakes, but if something goes wrong, they will always help you and tell you how to do it right.
3 Tips to Improve Your Vocabulary Quickly
Learning new vocabulary can be quite a challenge, but there are some easy tips to improve your English vocabulary.
First of all, you should start learning words in context. If you try to remember them without it, then it will be just a set of sounds and letters. If you write out a word, then be sure to try to insert it into a context that is appropriate in meaning. It must be borne in mind that the more work will be done with one text, the better it will be remembered. It is also important to take into account that when a word is, as it were, in work, then a person sees that it carries an informative load, as a result of which the vocabulary, albeit gradually, begins to replenish.
There is another simple but extremely effective piece of advice. Stop using online translators. In fact, they are still completely “illiterate”. Yes, they can be used to translate individual words, as it is fast and convenient. But the full sentences of the application are often translated according to the rules of the grammar of the Russian language, resulting in something completely absurd. In the end, you have to figure out why the meaning of the sentence is often slightly distorted or even radically changed.
And the last piece of advice: use the “card” method. Of course, in this case, you will have to try hard, but the efforts spent will lead to a good result.
First of all, you need to create the cards themselves. Their number will depend only on you, but you should not overclock too much. A huge number of cards can discourage all desire to learn. For starters, 50-60 pieces are more than enough. After that, all the cards should be divided into three equal piles.
The first will contain words that you are not yet familiar with. In the second – those words that you already know, but there are still doubts about them. And in the third should be well-known words.
First you need to start working with completely new words. On one side you need to write a word in English, and on the other side – a translation or context, you can even draw a picture.
