Monthly Video Conference meetings

Review developmental progress with your child’s Educator
Coaching strategies to meet areas for growth

    Isn’t screentime harmful for children?

Please keep in mind screentime negatively impacts brain development if a child is passively watching the screen.   Screen time does NOT negatively impact children if you and your family are actively helping them interact with fun activities.  This will be an Interactive program – your children will NOT be passively watching.  They’ll be answering questions from their educators, moving, singing and interacting with their friends!

Who is SOI Virtual Preschool appropriate for?

Parents who are invested in their preschoolers continued growth in all developmental and educational areas.  Classes are available for children between 3 and 5 years of age.

Parents must have the ability to print the materials and support their child during the class.

What if my child is having challenges?

If your child is struggling with listening, learning or they are missing socializing with children their own age, Virtual Tutoring will allow us to individualize the strategies we use and train you to use them effectively at other points in the day.

What equipment will my child need to attend?

Children will need a laptop/iPad, access to a printer, and a stable internet connection.

How do we expect children to listen and attend for 2-hours a day?

We are successful in teaching children how to manage their bodies and emotions and parents, how to support your child.  You will learn the best-practices to keep them learning, re-focus them when needed, and encourage their best efforts.

How long will Virtual Preschool be offered?

Given that COVID-19 has caused many schools to not open until the Fall, SOI will continue to offer the Virtual Program as long as there is a need for it in the community.

    How do I enroll?

By paying your monthly fee of $550, you reserve your child’s space in Virtual SOI Preschool.

You will then receive a secure survey requesting additional information to help our team best prepare for your child.

Once received, you will receive a calendar invitation that provides access to the class and the additional information you may need.

We provide you with easy-to-follow video lessons to help you successfully set up your child’s Virtual Preschool program, as well as the critical strategies you will need to know to ensure your family has an optimal experience.

We will also schedule an introductory virtual meeting between your family and your child’s Educator.

Will enrollment in the Virtual program guaranteed my child’s place when the Shelter-in-Place is lifted?

Your child will be guaranteed to continue with SOI virtually and if you would like to attend live in the future, your child will now be on the Priority Waiting List.  This moves them forward in the process and reduces their wait time for a classroom spot when SOI returns to live classes.

Why is there only the five-day a week option?

Consistency is critical for children during uncertain times and we will maintain their schedule as much as possible, even having snacks together with their friends again. Remember they will be able to see their friends and their educators. We will take breaks for things like potty time and nap time but otherwise, we will be providing fun and interactive activities for them to participate in.

In addition to Virtual Preschool, can SOI help my child catch-up on academics?

Yes!  We can provide individualized tutoring.   Just email us and we’ll be happy to help.

Will I have any opportunity to communicate with the teacher?

In addition to weekly newsletters from your Educator, there will be a question and answer section of each class.  This is an opportunity for parents to speak with their educators, get answers to questions, and share strategies each day.

We share the curriculum in advance so parents can more easily keep up to date with their classroom activities.

This is truly an interactive online learning experience!

    What is the curriculum?

Each class has a developmentally appropriate, theme-based curriculum based upon Desired Results Developmental Profile-2nd Edition (DRDP-2) which is a research-based observational tool used to assess each child’s development and progress on specific preschool skills.

Our program offers each child the opportunity to participate with children their age, in an interactive, virtual classroom experience.  The curriculum plan is organized online and linked to your class’ Calendar invitation.

What are the activities and schedule like?

Our structured schedule allows the children the opportunity to participate in fun group learning activities like circle time and science, table time activities, such as art, handwriting, science, math, and building fine motor skills.

We incorporate music into almost every activity from calendar time to cleanup time and ensure that the children are up and moving frequently to help them stay focused during learning times.  Storytime, phonics (Zoophonics), music and dance are part of our daily curriculum.

Activities are organized in Google Drive, and the link provided in your Calendar invitation.

Will my child be able to socialize with other children?

During class, the children have the opportunity to interact with their peers who are also attending the class virtually.  The daily schedule incorporates interactive playtimes as well as structured group lessons, table time, and movement activities.

Is the future already here? What does education look like in the metaverse? virtual reality. The teachers’ council tried to figure out what remote lessons will be like in the new “digital normality” and whether virtual education can replace a traditional school.

    What is the “metaverse”

The term “metaverse” (metaverse) first appeared in the book “Avalanche” by American science fiction writer Neil Stevenson, published in 1992. In the three-dimensional space that Stevenson wrote about, houses, parks, shops, and even nightclubs could be built, and avatars replaced people in it. 30 years after the publication of the book, the author’s fantasy becomes a reality, albeit a virtual one.

Today, companies are developing virtual offices for remote employees. And metaverses for entertainment already exist – for example, the Second Life project, a three-dimensional virtual world with elements of a social network, which has more than a million active users. Or VRChat, a gaming platform where players create their own worlds and interact with each other through avatars.

The most developed metaverse for today is presented on the Decentraland platform. Here, users create and sell content, make purchases, paying with cryptocurrency. In 2021, the first music festival was held in this metaverse, and the government of Barbados signed an agreement to acquire land there for its embassy.

In 2022, similar technologies have reached education. Already in August of this year in Florida, USA, the Optima Classical Academy will begin its work – the first school in the world “built” in the metaverse. As reported on the landing page of the project, it will be a free general education institution for 1300 places for students in grades 3-8 (corresponds to Russian grades 2-7).

As conceived by the founders of the school, studying in it will help unmotivated and poorly socialized children overcome themselves and finally get carried away with learning. The school provides all students with VR equipment and technical support throughout the course.

How education works in the metaverse

Wearing VR glasses, children will be able to attend virtual school classes without leaving home. At the lessons of astronomy and Sience (something like our surrounding world), schoolchildren will be able to “fly” around Mars and “land on the moon” on the natural satellite of the Earth, and during the history lesson – “sit” in the chair of the President of the United States in the Oval Office of the White House, take a walk through a Roman villa in ancient Pompeii or run after dinosaurs.

Metaverse lessons will be held four times a week in the morning – from 8.00 to 12.00. Each lesson lasts 30 to 45 minutes, plus breaks. The schedule of elementary school students (grades 3-5) includes mathematics, English, history, science, music, art and Latin. In secondary school, grammar and physical education appear in the curriculum, which children will be engaged in after school hours. Those subjects that cannot be studied in a virtual classroom, students will learn along their own individual route, using video materials, Internet resources and, of course, textbooks.

In addition to the compulsory program, the founders of the virtual school promise to involve their students in extracurricular activities: chess, scientific and book clubs, rhetoric, 3D modeling. All this will be available, and most importantly – free of charge, like basic training.

Developers are going to start accepting high school students next year. But there are no plans to accept children younger than 8 years old at Optima Classical Academy: in order to study in virtual reality, you need to have a high level of independence and organization, and kids still need the help of their parents.

Virtual school – breakthrough or catastrophe?

Optima Classic Academy is confident that the introduction of the metaverse technology into the educational process will be able to answer several challenges of our time at once.

Firstly, the creators of the virtual school are positioning it as a real salvation for schoolchildren during global challenges, such as pandemics, which, as Bill Gates promises, will become commonplace for humanity in the near future.

Secondly, immersion in the metaverse will make it possible to present the educational process under a non-standard sauce and thus captivate children with learning. In addition, it is cooler than traditional distance learning: the student (more precisely, his avatar) is not alone with the computer, but in the “class”, along with his classmates and the teacher’s avatar, which addresses directly to the students, and not to the monitor.

The third argument of the founders of the school: children who cannot go to school for health reasons will have a chance to go beyond home schooling. And besides, a virtual educational institution can solve the problem of overcrowding of classes: it will be able to accept 1,300 students, which is twice as much as a regular school, for example, in Miami. For comparison: the largest school in Moscow works with 2,500 students, and the average occupancy of a metropolitan school is 550-900 people.

Despite these benefits, many American parents reacted extremely negatively to the innovation. In the comments to the news about the imminent launch of the virtual school, the words “matrix” and “emotional disaster” are found every now and then.

“Let the children become robots. Programmed, without emotion. Let’s say no to interaction in society,” one Facebook user writes sarcastically.

    Expert opinion

Having learned about the imminent launch of Optima Classic Academy, we turned to Mikhail Morozov, Professor of the Department of Computer Science and System Programming, Ph.D., head of the Laboratory of Multimedia Systems at the Volga State Technological University and one of the founders of the Russian « virtual university” — vAcademia project:

“It is now possible to use elements of the metaverse and virtual reality. But only as a small element of the school curriculum, as an addition to the main one. And the project of the American school does not look quite real and, moreover, dangerous to health.

The fact is that new metaverses based on immersive virtual reality technologies require special VR helmets, and modern VR headset is not suitable for long-term use by children. On the VR headsets themselves there is a note: “Not intended for persons under 13 years of age.” It turns out that in this school the bulk of the students are those who cannot use such helmets.

Research has been conducted in the US on the effects of VR headsets on children’s and adolescent health. It turned out that children are more susceptible than adults to cybersickness, a functional disorder similar in symptoms to motion sickness. It occurs due to problems with focusing vision when using a VR helmet. Even adults can’t comfortably wear helmets for more than half an hour yet, while children start to feel dizzy after 10 minutes.

Scientists have concluded that the use of a VR headset for 30 minutes a day by children under the age of 10 may affect the development of the visual system. Safe VR helmets for them will appear no earlier than in 10 years. In the meantime, full-fledged lessons in VR for several hours a day are likely to cause irreparable harm to health.

Digitalization of education is good. But you have to use it correctly. You should not understand it only as a remote work technology – do not go to school, everything is on the Web. Without live communication is impossible. Man teaches man, and machine teaches machine. “Digital” is just a tool for presenting information, for engagement, for personalization, for communication.

What should be done first? Firstly, to support live classes in the classroom with the “digit”. Make them more active and efficient. Second, take independent work to the next level with smart interactive content instead of textbooks. And third, through artificial intelligence, to provide support for more individual learning – the realization of all the talents of students.

Will virtuality in a helmet become a new standard in education? Most likely, it will be one of the learning technologies. Not the fact that the main one. Augmented reality also has great prospects, it is more practical and less expensive.

But those who resist the introduction of technology in education should understand that we have already passed the point of no return. Digitalization, VR, augmented reality are with us forever. As with mobile phones, we can no longer live without them. There will be no rollback, everything will only develop.”
