“It has been a pleasure to be a part of VOG since September 2019. Our family moved to Bandera, TX, from a small town south of San Antonio this past August. My husband is a teacher/coach at Bandera High School, and I am currently a stay at home mother. We have three children (Jude-5, Vivianna-4, and Nayanna- 7 months). I have worked in the public education field in many capacities since 2002. First, as an early childhood teacher (prek, kinder, 1st), then as a reading coach (kinder-3rd), and finally as a School Psychologist (prek -12th). Above all, I am a wife and mother to my three children. Most of my experience has been in either rural communities, or in the heart of San Antonio in traditional public schools or public charters.

When my son, Jude, started his year at VOG, there were a lot of unknowns because of my lack of experience with private education. I never planned on having my son attend private school because of the worry of finances. Obviously, God had other plans for our family, and again He has shown us to trust him fully. We decided to enroll Jude at VOG after attempting public education two weeks prior to the first day of school at VOG. Jude was having some emotional struggles, which left my husband and I with a very uneasy feeling. We knew at that point that something had to change immediately. By the grace of God, a sweet mom from the Bandera County Area Homeschoolers recommended VOG. I homeschooled Jude since he was a toddler and planned on continuing if we could not find an alternative school that we felt comfortable with him attending. My first visit to VOG was a breath of fresh air and a feeling of peace. After that initial meeting, I called out to the Lord to show us how to make this happen and to trust this path. It is now February 2020, and we are still here.

There are many positives to public education; however, it is imperative to understand that it isn’t for every child or family. I am an advocate for school choice and have shared my experience with many on my search for the right school for my child. I toured and observed in multiple charter schools in San Antonio before knowing we would be moving to Bandera. It’s important for families to evaluate and self-reflect on what is crucial for their child’s educational experience. There is not a “one size fits all” school for every child. Honestly, I did not consider the aspects of the importance of a Christian based education prior to visiting VOG. The spiritual and emotional impact on Jude, and also our whole family has been immeasurable. 

One of the many positives about VOG is the student to teacher ratios. The students are able to get a generous amount of individualized attention throughout the school day, which is so important to overall growth. The school also provides an abundant amount of outdoor, unstructured play, which is something that is rarely found in other schools. There is evidence that this type of play has a positive impact on overall social and cognitive development. Furthermore, VOG thrives on building and fostering positive relationships. I enjoy the daily structured routines that occur during morning drop off and afternoon pick up. The teachers are always ready to welcome the students and have an overall expectation to start the day off on a positive note. The students know exactly what to do as soon as they enter their classrooms. This structure and organization is a great model as the students develop their own personal routines. 

Most importantly, it is the spiritual and emotional influence the school has had on Jude and our family. Having the ability to speak openly about our Lord is something I never knew we needed or wanted in his education. The daily encouragement, love, and guidance from one another at the school is what we truly need in our society. Where does it all stem from? Our Lord and the Word of God. The Word guides this school daily, and it genuinely shows. There is a constant presence of love from the staff, which in turn influences their daily walk with each other. They openly model the fruits of the spirit every day. This helps shape the students’ behaviors with others as well as their personal self-regulation.

Our first experience with VOG was at VBS in August 2016. Little did we know that this would be just the

little mustard seed planted into our 4-year-old daughter’s heart as well as my wife and I. With my wife

returning back to work and Bethany’s current home daycare shutting down we struggled to find the

right place for our daughter to go to kindergarten and eventually first grade. With my extensive

traveling for work and my wife commute to SA, we were exploring extreme options to get her in a

school that would allow her to excel academically and spiritually. About the same time, my wife and I

remembered VOG and were blessed that they still had room for one more student. Thank God, our search

was over, but challenges still lay ahead.

To say the least, Bethany had some catching up to do, and she did. Ms. Berenice and Ms. Rebecca’s patience and

wits were put to the test by our daughter and possibly the other students as well. However, their faith

and vision was not. They saw in our daughter what other schools, both public and private, may not have

seen as well as helping her to grow spiritually, academically, and socially.

Here we are in the 3rd quarter of first grade, all the time and energy invested by Ms. Rebecca, Ms.

Berenice and now Ms. Katie, Bethany, is a bright shining star, excelling, loving school, and God. If it were

not for the unfaltering love, care, passion and faith of the VOG family we don’t know where we would

be today.

If you want the best Christian based education for your child or for someone you know, you don’t have

to look any further but at VOG. Unlike other schools, the children and everyone involved are family. As of

2020, we may only be Pre-K to first grade, but next year we should have second grade and who knows

what God has planned for how big and fast the school will grow. But all the kids are growing in ways

Fredericksburg, Texas – Wikipedia

Fredericksburg (German: Friedrichsburg ) is the seat of Gillespie County, in the US State of Texas. ^[5] As of the 2010 Census, 10,530 people lived in the city. ^[6]

Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 and named after Prince Friedrich of Prussia. Fredericksburg is located east of the center of Gillespie County at 30°16′27″N. 98°52′19″W / 30.274058°N 98.871822°W / 30.274058; -98.871822 (30.274058, −98.871822). ^[10] It is 70 miles (110 km) north of San Antonio and 78 miles (126 km) west of Austin.

According to the US Census Bureau, the city has a total area of ​​8.6 square miles (22.3 km2). ² ), of which 8.6 square miles (22.2 km ² ) is land and 0.05 sq. miles (0.12 km ² ), or 0.55%, is covered by water. ^[11]

Enchanted Rock

30 9023 Railroad The San Antonio, Fredericksburg and Northern Railroad was chartered to connect Fredericksburg with the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad near Waring. ^[19] A 920-foot (280 m) railroad trestle was built and still exists as the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife Bat Habitat at the Old Tunnel at 10619 Old San Antonio Rd, with picnic facilities and restroom for visitors. ^[20] The cost of the tunnel sent the railroad to the admissions office on October 28, 1914. ^[21] It was sold for ransom on December 31, 1917 to Martin Carl, who transferred ownership of the Fredericksburg and Northern Railroad which was chartered on December 26 of that year. The Fredericksburg-Stonewall area became known as the Peach Capital of Texas ^[24] and Benjamin Lester Enderle is known as the father of the Hill Country peach industry. Enderle worked on the Hale, Burbank, Elberta and Stark varieties. The new appellations were officially announced in May 2018, with a publication in the Official Journal of the Republic of Chile.

The new appellations are: Lo Abarca, Licantén, Apalta, Los Lingues – all of them belong to the category DO (denominaciónes de origen). Their names may appear on the labels of wines made from 85% of grapes originating from the specified region.

Lo Abarca DO

So far, DO Lo Abarca has only one producer, Casa Marín, whose wines stand out for their style – in particular, very bright and sharp acidity .

Climate classification of Chile’s zones


The area of ​​the zone is 124 hectares. The predominant varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carignan.

Licantén is located in the Teno Valley at Curicó (part of the Central Valley ). According to the climate classification, the appellation belongs to the category Costa (coastal).

There is only one manufacturer in this area, La Ronciere. Before that, the founder of the winery spent two years looking for unique terroirs – during this time he managed to work with 1000 separate small plots.

“This area has special temperatures, soils, movements of air masses, the influence of the sun. It is located 24 km from the ocean, and therefore the zone is not as cold as other coastal areas of Chile. Therefore, we grow only red varieties. ”

The key characteristics of the zone are four different types of soil : lycorella, gravel, clay and residual rock, consisting of fine particles of residual silt and clay.

Vineyards of Licanten

Apalta DO

The largest and best known of the four new appellations. Since 1990 it has been known as a place for the production of excellent red wines, mostly assemblage. This area produces some of the most expensive wines in Chile.

There are 1007 hectares of vineyards in the zone. Key varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Mourvèdre and Grenache.

The region is located in Colchagua (part of the Rapel region in Central Valley ). According to the climate classification, the appellation belongs to the category Entre-Cordilleras (between the Cordilleras).

The zone is shaped like a horseshoe and is protected by hills from the north, east and west. Below the valley, on heavier clay soils, grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère. The Rhone varieties, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, grow on hills with poorer granite soils.

Los Lingues DO

The appellation consists of 492 hectares where the main varieties are Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah and Tempranillo.

The Los Lingues zone is located in Colchagua , Rapel region (within Central Valley ). According to the climate classification, the appellation belongs to the category Andes (Andes).

A key factor in this area is the location of the vineyards in the foothills of the Andes. But even within the Los Lingues zone, there are differences, depending on whether the vineyards are located in the lower parts or on the foothills themselves.

However, the entire zone is characterized by the presence of volcanic soils , clay mix, basalt and colluvial rocks. red varieties (the most popular varieties from Bordeaux) are mainly grown here – due to the predominance of the Mediterranean climate with warm and sunny days followed by cool evenings.

A TASTE OF WINE AND THE SUN – Our Texas – Russian Newspaper in Houston, Dallas, San-Antonio, Austin, Texas hills of vineyards… Do you think this is possible only in Italy or in the south of France? Not at all, you can arrange a tour of the wineries here in Texas – in the Hill Country area.

The rolling fields of this part of Texas around Austin and San Antonio are great for growing grapes. Every year there are more and more wineries, and more and more tourists flock to the “wine Mecca”: in 2005 there were 85 wineries, and now there are about a hundred! After all, as Goethe wrote, “life is too short to drink bad wine” – and who will not agree with this?

Before you go wine tasting in the Hill Country, think about lodging for the night: after all, you will need to store your body weary of wine libations somewhere. You can settle in Austin or San Antonio or in a small cozy town nearby.

One option is to start your trip in the exciting city of Fredericksburg, located in the heart of the Hill Country.

The main street of this town, founded by German settlers in the middle of the 19th century, has signs in both English and German – Main Street (Hauptstrasse). Literally a five-minute drive from the main street is the Enchanted Rock mountain made of unique pink granite, to which the Indians attributed magical properties. Climbing it is not too difficult, and the view from the top is truly magical.

It is very pleasant to stay in this city not in a hotel, but in one of the “gingerbread” old houses – there are plenty of such houses for tourists here. If you live not in a typical dull hotel room, but in a building built more than a hundred years ago and carefully furnished and decorated by the hostess with various antiques, you really relax your soul. In the evening, after trips to the vineyards and a delicious dinner at a local restaurant, you can sit on the sofa in the living room, sort out the numerous embroidered pillows, and leaf through the yellowed pages of old books.

There are many wine tours on offer: by mini-buses and limousines, in groups large and small, as well as romantic trips for two. Tickets are usually expensive – from a hundred dollars per person and more. But if you are carried away by tasting this evening, you will be transported back to the place of settlement without any hassle.

A more democratic way is to travel through the vineyards as “savages”. You plan the route yourself, choose which wineries you want to visit. Most of them are on road 290 with the telling name Wine Trail – you just go from one winery to another and taste. However, in terms of libations, you will have to restrain yourself: after two wineries, your eyes become clouded.

The cost of tasting tickets depends on how many drinks you plan to try. For example, if you pay $25, you are given a list of the wines on display and a pen: you mark which ones you are interested in and start the tasting process. Sometimes it is worth listening to the advice of the tasting room staff, they can advise the wines that this winery is famous for. It is better to start with a minimum set of drinks – firstly, the day has just begun, and there are many tastings ahead, and secondly, employees often offer to try several more types of wine for free.

There are certain tasting rules. They are described on many sites: about the fact that you first need to inhale the aroma of wine, that you need to “twist” it in a glass, look at the color of the drink and at the “legs” – streams of wine flowing down the inner walls of the glass, sip the wine and hold it on your tongue and only then swallow … But here in Texas people live simple, there are no snobs, and all these ceremonies are useless: we all understand that, by and large, we don’t understand wine, right? Of course, no one will hastily knock over glass after glass, but holding the glass in the palms and saying with the air of a connoisseur that “it has not yet opened” is also not necessary.

You will be told in detail about each type of wine, including what dishes it would be good to serve with. Between samples, give water to drink or eat a dry cracker in order to refresh the taste sensations. If you absolutely do not like the proposed type of wine, you can spit it into a special spittoon. But what kind of Russian will part with an alcoholic drink of his own free will?

If you like wine and one sip is not enough for you, you can buy it right here. And right here, sit down and drink a bottle or two. The only thing is that not every winery offers full dinners with wine, and there is no variety of snacks either. Some wineries simply sell pizza from a van, while others can buy simple snacks in a local shop – cheese, prosciutto, vegetables with dip sauce. Some prudent citizens come to the tasting as a picnic, having prepared sandwiches and other food in advance.

By the way, many wineries are engaged not only in the cultivation of grapes, so they offer many other goods in their shops. For example, Grape Creek Vineyards sells aromatic grape seed oil, and Becker Vineyards sells lavender soap and candles.

Hill Country did not become the center of the wine industry overnight: it took many years of exploration. It all started back in the 17th century, when Spanish missionaries planted grapes in the area in which the city of El Paso was then founded. Apparently, they could not live without their favorite Spanish wine. At 19th century, the vine “grew” in many areas of Texas and, one might say, became the savior of winemakers in France.

The fact is that in 1880 the wine-growing lands were badly damaged by a pest – a small insect called “phylloxera” (phylloxera). And root shoots brought from Texas literally saved the French vineyards: French grapes were grafted with shoots of Texas origin that are resistant to these parasites. And the savior was the winemaker Thomas Munson, who in gratitude in 1888 was even awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor by the French. So every glass of French wine has a drop of Texas grapes in it.

Wine production in Texas is driven by passionate vintners who are passionate about their work, such as Dan Gatlin, owner of Inwood Estates Vineyards. One of the most famous wine producers in Texas has been making wine in our state for about thirty years. At first, Dan Gatlin was the owner of a liquor store and a buyer of wine. After selling his business, in 1981 he ordered every possible variety of grape from California and planted seedlings near Dallas to see which one would do better.

In those years, there were only five or six vineyards in Texas – the development of the wine industry was suspended during the Prohibition, which was in force in the United States from 1920 to 1933. And Gatlin’s new experimental vineyard has become an invaluable source of information. For years, he watched 30 varieties of grapes grow, planted in six vineyards in various areas of Texas.

Studies have shown that Texas wines are very dependent on terroir (terroir) – a combination of soil and climatic factors and special characteristics of the area (relief, the presence of reservoirs, forests and other plants growing on and around the site). This makes the process of growing grapes much more difficult than in California, where at some point the process can be left to chance.

California vintners’ technology doesn’t work in Texas, and Dan set the ‘wine maker’s rules’ himself, drawing on European experience. And the taste of Texas wine, due to the distinctive features of the climate and the high content of minerals in the soil (especially calcium), does not look like California, but rather resembles Old World drinks, especially Spanish, French and Italian wines.

One of Dan Gatlin’s major discoveries was Tempranillo, the main red grape variety in the Rioja region of Spain. It pairs perfectly with many Italian, Spanish and Mexican dishes, and blends well with other grape varieties such as Cabernet. The Tempranillo-Cabernet wine from Inwood Estates winery is one of the most popular.

The challenge is that this variety needs not only hot days but also cool nights (less than 65 Fahrenheit), and in Texas temperatures rarely drop below 70 degrees. Therefore, this grape variety was planted at Newsom Vineyards in Yoakum County – at an altitude of 4000 feet above sea level. This place was chosen by Gatlin, because the altitude significantly affects the ripening of the “correct” grapes: in the southern latitudes, the altitude provides the very necessary temperature regime for the “capricious” Tempranillo, which subtly reacts to weather changes.

The vineyard is therefore 400 miles from the winery, and transportation of tender berries can adversely affect palatability. Here Gatlin uses another trick he learned from celebrity vintners in California’s Napa Valley in the 1970s: to preserve the flavor and aroma of the grapes, the grapes are picked at night in the cool desert air and immediately pressed for a few minutes. Then the chilled must is transported to the winery Inwood Estates, where the wine is aged in French oak barrels – this type of wood gives the drink additional flavors and saturates the wine with oxygen through the pores.
