Head Start

Head Start and Early Head Start are national educational programs that promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. The Head Start program provides developmentally appropriate preschool activities to children ages 3-5 with a special focus on helping children develop the early reading and math skills they need to be successful in school. Early Head Start promotes the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of infants and toddlers, as well as providing prenatal education to pregnant mothers. Head Start and Early Head Start both support families in setting and achieving family centered goals. The staff recognizes that the parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. We welcome parent involvement and work as partners with parents to develop a program that best meets the needs of their child. All Head Start centers are licensed childcare facilities that provide services to economically disadvanted children and families. Household income eligibility is based upon 100% of the federal poverty guidelines

Head Start Success Story, Serina Tackett

My name is Serina Tackett and I want to inform you about the success story I have had with Head Start. I first started with the Head Start Program when my oldest child, who is now ten, was three. That was back in 2011. I have three other daughters who have followed in her footsteps since then. My second to youngest just finished the program last year.

I cannot encourage you enough to sign your children up. Head Start has helped my children to develop the skills they need to be kindergarten ready. As parents we do what is best for our children and this is one of the best choices I could have made as a parent. Head Start got them ready not only mentally but emotionally as well. They were able to experience a classroom setting with structure and other children. They also experienced the length of a school day which is very important because it helps them to be better prepared for how long they are.

I enjoy being involved with my children and their school activities so I got involved with Policy Council. This was a great opportunity for me to know what changes were going on with the school and for the school to hear my voice. I am currently wrapping up my fourth year with the Policy Council. I really could never express my gratitude and appreciation for everyone at Head Start. They have all made a huge impact in my children’s lives as well as my own.

The Vigo County School Corporation serves early learners throughout the county through daycare programs for infants to preschoolers, full day Pre-K (Deming, Fuqua, Vikes and Tykes), and half day Pre-K (Terre Town, Farrington Grove).

Full Day Pre-K

Full Day Pre-K is for students who are 4 by August 1.

During the 2022-23 school year, Full Day Pre-K will be available at Deming, Fuqua, and Vikes and Tykes.

Times

Full day Pre-K follows the Vigo County School Corporation calendar. Class starts at 8 a.m. and students are dismissed at 2:30 p.m. We are unable to provide transportation for Pre-K students.

Cost

Full day Pre-K is available for a rate of $21 per day.

Scholarships are available for students who live in a Title I district and through On My Way Pre-K and CCDF.

Title I Districts: Benjamin Franklin, Davis Park, DeVaney, Farrington Grove, Fuqua, Hoosier Prairie, Meadows, Ouabache, Sugar Creek Consolidated, Sugar Grove, Terre Town

Before/After School Care is available at a rate of $9 per day.

Half Day Pre-K

Half day Pre-K is for students who are 4 by August 1. In the 2022-23 school year, the Vigo County School Corporation will offer half day Pre-K at Terre Town and Farrington Grove.

Times

Half day Pre-K follows the Vigo County School Corporation calendar. The morning session runs 8:15-10:50, and the afternoon session runs 12:10-2:45. We are unable to provide transportation for Pre-K students.

Cost

Half day Pre-K is available for a rate of $10.50 per day.

Scholarships are available for students who live in a Title I district and through On My Way Pre-K and CCDF.

Daycare

The Vigo County School Corporation offers daycare for infants to 3-year-olds at Little Braves (Booker T. Washington) and Deming Early Learning Center.

Deming Early Learning Center

A full day daycare is available to the public and VCSC employees for children infant-3 years old. This program runs 7:15-4:45. We are open 182 days in alignment with teacher workdays and the school calendar.

Children ages infant-2 pay a fee of $40 per day and 3 year olds pay a fee of $30 per day. Scholarships are available through On My Way Pre-K and CCDF.

Little Braves Early Learning Center

Little Braves has been in existence for 8 years. It is located in Booker T. Washington Alternative High School. Our employees, the public, and parenting teens are welcome to bring their children to this location. Our Early Childhood Education students also spend time in the classroom to earn their Child Development credits. They are open from 7:15-4:45.

Infants-2 year olds cost $40 per day, 3 year olds cost $30 per day. This is an all inclusive fee, meaning there are no additional fees for meals or supplies. Scholarships are available through On My Way Pre-K and CCDF.

We are open 182 days in alignment with teacher workdays and the school calendar.
