UX, or User Experience designer, despite the name of his profession, is engaged not so much in design as design. His task is to make this or that product as convenient as possible for the end user. This product can be, for example, a website, desktop, mobile application. It is the UX designer who is responsible for how attractive this product will be for users, and, accordingly, how many of them want to complete the target action (for example, buy an application, download it, place an order on the site). By the way, the ProfGid career guidance center has recently developed an accurate career guidance test that will tell you which professions suit you, give an opinion about your personality type and intelligence.
The profession is suitable for those who are interested in psychology, drawing, drafting and computer science (see.
choosing a profession based on interest in school subjects). 9Ol000
Brief description: what is a UX designer
Test: What to become: UX or UI designer?
Although the term “UX designer” is relatively recent and is most often applied to professionals who work on improving the user interface of IT products, the profession has been around since time immemorial. Any “customization” of the appearance of the product, making it more convenient for potential buyers, can be called a kind of UX design. The only difference is that modern UX designers use digital tools in their work and work with digital products.
Today, the demand for UX/UI designers is growing as more companies adopt digital tools. The field of product design is unusually broad and is represented by a wide variety of roles. These are UX designers or, as they are also called, interaction designers, graphic and visual (UI) designers, motion and animation designers, as well as user researchers, UX writers, and product analysts. Their presence in the team depends on the range of problems that need to be solved, on the volume of the business, its structure, as well as on the product itself and the distribution of tasks in the product team.

Profession features of a UX designer
research. In his work, he can combine the duties of a UX- and UI- (User Interface) designer. At the same time, UX design is associated more with the structure of the product and comfort when using it, and UI – with the appearance of the product and ease of use (for example, eye-pleasing color combinations, rational and logical arrangement of interface elements, acceptable button size, etc.). ).
The main responsibilities of a UX designer typically include:
- User scenario analysis (the study of how users behave when using a product).
- Creating a portrait of the target audience.
- Conduct user surveys.
- Thinking through the logic of using the product.
- Development of a clickable product prototype.
- Testing the prototype on users, making changes based on its results.
- Repeat iterations of Prototype-Test-Change until the optimal user experience is achieved.
As you can see from this list, being a UX designer means being prepared to do a lot of research. Such a specialist does not make decisions “on a whim”, based on his own ideas or even well-known principles of interface optimization. It is based on the results of prototype testing on real users, because this is the only way to ensure the creation of a truly convenient and functional product.
The most important thing is to understand that this is work. And quite difficult, because it is both a creative and mathematical area, where it is important not only to do it beautifully, but to be aimed at the result. Therefore, probably, the secret of success lies in the formula: talent, discipline and kicking yourself. The field is constantly changing and updating, and you need to keep up with trends. So if you choose this profession, be prepared to learn all your life.

Pros and cons of the profession UX designer
Pros:
- A profession in demand on the modern labor market.
- High level of wages.
- Opportunity to do useful work and see the results of your work.
- Prospects for the development of cross-professional skills and retraining in related fields.
- Ability to work remotely.
Cons:
- Big responsibility for the final product.
- The need to constantly organize research among users.
- The need to have knowledge from related areas (as already noted, a UX designer is often involved, for example, also in UI design).
Important personal qualities
Although the name of the profession contains the word “designer”, and it is to a certain extent related to the appearance of IT products, analytical skills are still much more important for such a specialist than artistic ones. Also important is the ability to communicate and work in a team, perseverance and concentration, algorithmic approach to the implementation of professional tasks, initiative, perseverance, stress resistance and the ability to plan your working time.
The main thing is to be able to show your skills, get to the bottom of the problem and demonstrate its optimal solution. <...> Development (career. – Ed.) also depends on how a person knows how to interact with a team. In the course of work, he will work closely with developers, analysts and product managers. The ability to build effective relationships, to make sure that the whole team works for a single result – all this will undoubtedly contribute to the success of any product, and the designer will be promoted on the career ladder.

If you are interested in the profession of UX / UI designer, it is not critical to have a degree in art or computer engineering. Although a higher education in design or information technology will be an undoubted advantage for development in this profession. <...> …many specialists take additional courses or retraining to gain the skills of a UX/UI designer. The educational services market is filled with a huge number of programs and projects on this topic, so anyone can choose this path.
Natalia Kulagina
Consultant for IT&Telecom direction of the international recruiting company Hays
You can study exactly as a UX designer in various IT schools that are not directly related to the general system of higher education. Theoretically, you can even get a job without a diploma if the applicant has the necessary knowledge and skills and can demonstrate this.
With the help of courses, you can easily enter the profession in 2-3 months and then study to improve your skills. You can easily become a senior in 2-3 years if you get into a good team on freelance or in a studio. When choosing a course, first of all, I advise you not to be led by advertising and carefully study the mentor and curators.

UX/UI designer: what does he do, how much does he earn and how to become one? In this article, we will talk in detail about how a UI / UX designer works, how much he earns, how to learn from him and where to exhibit his work.
Who is a UI/UX designer
A UI/UX designer is a specialist who designs user interfaces. UI and UX are different areas of design, but they are closely related, so one person can work with them.
UX (“user experience”) is “user experience” and UI (“User Interface”) is “user interface”. That is, the UI designer is responsible for making it pleasant for our eyes to perceive an unfamiliar program visually: this is affected by color, shape, location of functionality, and other parameters. And the UX designer is responsible for ensuring that we intuitively perceive the interface and master it as quickly as possible. The better the work is done, the easier it is to use the program.
The history of the profession
The origins can be traced back to ancient Greece, when the Greeks created tools and equipped workplaces based on ergonomic principles. For example, Hippocrates described the surgeon’s office as follows: “the doctor can stand or sit in a position that is comfortable for him, and the instruments should be located in such a way as not to interfere with him, but be easily accessible. ”
UX design was first described scientifically by Taylor Winslow in the 1900s. He did research on the interaction between worker and tool. After 11 years, Winslow published the book “Principles of Scientific Management”, in which he argued that the better the space is arranged, the more effective the result.
Another person who stands out was the American industrial design engineer Henry Dreyfuss. In 1955, he wrote the book Design for People and briefly described the meaning of UX: “When the point of contact between product and people becomes a point of friction, then the designer fails.” But the happier people are because of the interaction with the product, the more successful the work on the part of the designer was.
But not only engineers have played a role in the history of UX. Walt Disney is often referred to as the first UX designer: he aimed to create the perfect user experience in his amusement park. In an article for UX Magazine, designer Joseph Dickerson lays out the core principles of animator: know your audience, “wear their shoes,” and communicate through color, shape, and texture.
In the 1970s, psychologists and engineers combined their knowledge to create the most user-friendly device. 15 years later, the Macintosh appeared – the first computer with a built-in screen and mouse. Then Apple became one of the leaders in the field of user experience, and remains so to this day.
The term “user experience design” was coined by Donald Norman, professor of cognitive science. With it, he covered everything that is in UX.
Notable UX/UI Designers
Farai Majima now leads UX Shopify and hosts the Pixel Up! At the moment, one of the main achievements of Majima is the creation of banking products throughout Africa. The difficulty lies in the fact that the Internet is not available in certain parts of the mainland.
Faray also boasts over 14 years of experience in UX and shares his tips on his social media.

Another top designer and co-founder of Carbon Health is Pablo Stanley. He often leads seminars and likes to share knowledge on YouTube (beware, there is a lot of joke content). Stanley leads a community of Latin American designers who lecture around the world on professional topics.
Mark Wheeler is an Art Director at Microsoft. He is working to make the interface as user-friendly as possible. Wheeler is an expert in many types of UX: virtual and augmented reality, app and website product design, advertising campaigns, and games and movies.
Appearance design for Apple OS/MacOS 2020 on Macbook. Source: Aurelien Salomon portfolio on Dribbble
Aurelien Salomon can be described as a world class designer. Throughout his career, he has worked with companies such as Apple, Google, Uber, Tinder, Watson, Universal Studios, Metalab and other equally well-known brands. One of his biggest achievements to date is the redesign of the Apple OS/MacOS 2020 operating system called “Edge to edge”.
UX/UI Design Trends
Animated Illustration
One of the most popular design trends of our time is animation. We can see it almost everywhere: on websites, in applications, PC programs. This design trend brings the interface to life and gives the image an emotional touch.
Microinteractions
These can be found on most websites or applications. The simplest example is the “likes” and other reactions feature in Facebook.
3D graphics
Nowadays, 3D graphics have become a traditional companion of life: they are used in movies, video games, advertising. This trend also helps in the design of goods: three-dimensional objects can be viewed from all sides and get more information about the product.
An example of using 3D in website design. Source: Mike’s profile | Creative Mints on Dribbble
Augmented Reality
This trend has been gaining momentum in recent years, with corporations investing millions of dollars in augmented reality, and Apple has already released a set of AR tools for designers. AR technologies can be used in online stores: for example, to give the buyer the opportunity to “try on” a new bookcase in a room using a smartphone and a camera.
Skeuomorphic design
Skeuomorphism refers to the realistic way in which objects are depicted. Here they devote a lot of time to appearance: light, shadows, highlights and texture. Along with the development of augmented reality, skeuomorphism is also being improved.
Storytelling
Storytelling is the transmission of the desired meanings through an image or text. This can often be seen when a brand introduces a new service or product. Storytelling is always about being creative.
UX/UI Designer Tools
Sketch is the basic tool for UX designers. It has built-in tools for creating interfaces, you can make interactive prototypes. It is also easy to find plugins on the Internet that will help make the design more unique.
User Report is a widget that allows users to test a site or application and give feedback on it. It works together with your project, whether it’s a website or an application, and gives you the opportunity to make the design more convenient.
Craft is an InVision plugin designed for Photoshop or Sketch. It has a set of animations and photos, it allows you to view the prototype on the device. For developers, there is a code generation feature.
Unbounce – Helps you create and test landing pages. Simple interface, you can create multiple versions of the project at once. Suitable for collaboration.
Figma is another basic interface design program with simple controls and many features. You can work both in the web version and in the installed program. The whole team can create a project at the same time. CSS export is also available directly from the program.
Pidoco – in the program you can not only create wireframes, layouts and prototypes, but also test them. It is possible to present prototypes to the client online.
Bugherd is a system for viewing bugs and managing projects in UX. There is a feedback function.
Mockplus is a simple, fast prototyping platform for mobile app and website development.
What the workflow looks like
The design process often consists of four steps:
- identify the problem and gather information;
- come up with design options;
- create a prototype;
- to test.
First, the designer needs to understand what the client needs and how to achieve their business goals with the help of a website or application. You also need to determine the needs of users. To do this, they collect information: for example, they conduct interviews and research their competitors. The first will determine the needs of people, and the second will help improve what is already on the market.
When the material is collected, you can begin to model the layout of the design. To facilitate the work, the designer can create a “typical user” – a fictional character who will become the embodiment of the audience. The specialist thinks out a story for him, which describes the motivation: why does he use this product or service? How will he use it? What problems can arise while working with the application or website?
Then work begins with the design itself: sketches, layouts and prototypes are created. The specialist builds the whole process on visual and technical foundations: thinking about what a person will use in the first place and how it will be more convenient for him.
An example of an application for calling a taxi. Source: depositphotos
After the design is approved, testing is carried out. A certain target audience uses the site and, based on the results, changes are made to it for re-testing. Users are also surveyed and site activity is analyzed (clicks, search queries, and so on). And so on until the design suits the customer and the team of specialists completely.
Vocational training
There are many courses, short and long, that can be found online and read reviews. We have prepared a small list of free basic courses:
Hackdesign. Free and simple. Every week, all materials and tasks come to the mail. Suitable more for those who already have experience in design, even a small one.
Khan Academy. A course on learning the basics of UX \ UI. The course is especially suitable for teenagers, teachers and children.
Future learn. Named Best Free UI Course at the UX UI Awards. No qualifications are required to pass. But some courses require either special equipment or a certain level of understanding of the subject – you can learn more about this in the “Requirements” section.
Universities often don’t provide such a specialty, but you can go to study programming or design. For example, to the Kyiv National University of Technology and Design, or to the Moscow State Academy of Art and Industry. S. G. Stroganov.
Because education can lag behind current trends, most UX/UI designers either took online courses or were self-taught. The last option is not an easy one: you need to be able to organize your training and choose only the necessary information from the flow.
For self-study, YouTube video tutorials, free courses or books are great. For example, “Mobile forward!” is a book by renowned UX/UI designer Luke Wroblewski, who is the director of product at Google. Written in 2013, it’s still a market leader for information on why web designs are designed for mobile in the first place.
Where to present your work
Carbonmade — allows you not only to share your work, but also to communicate with other designers. It also features a simple and lightweight interface.
Behance — the site attracts millions of UX / UI designers, artists and photographers around the world. There you can register for free and get a profile with personal information, a portfolio and links to social networks.
Dribbble is another popular free service among UX/UI designers. You can share small screenshots of your design processes, design sketches, interactive prototypes, app design concepts, and more.
Unlike Behance, where super details can be presented, Dribbble only allows users to display screenshots of various designs. Because of this, designers often use Behance and Dribbble together to get the attention of employers faster.
Salary of a UX/UI designer
The average salary of a beginner UI/UX designer in Ukraine is $650, in Kyiv — $1000. Freelancing in Ukraine can earn from 1.5 thousand hryvnia per project, but it depends on the experience and skills of the specialist.
The average salary for a UX designer in the US is $6,000 per month . In Russia, a beginner in this field can receive $540 per month , an advanced specialist can ask for his services from $1000 to $1600.
