UPS Driver Salary 101 | How Much Do UPS Drivers Make?

Last updated:

How Much Do UPS Truck Drivers Make?

This is the most common question we get at TDS. Our original guide was first published in 2012 and a decade in we wanted to provide an in-depth update on what you can expect to make driving for UPS. This includes payroll data from Teamsters, ADP, Indeed, Glassdoor, Payscale.com and driver surveys.

A career as a UPS driver can be lucrative and rewarding. But the exact UPS driver pay depends on what type of vehicle you operate. Long-haul trucking “OTR” driving pays more than driving local package delivery “brown trucks.” But both career paths pay well and have great benefits packages.

Let’s break down the details…

UPS Truck Driver Salary Info

UPS Delivery Driver Pay (Local “Brown Trucks”)

Let’s start with those familiar brown trucks you see around town.

The brown trucks you see are referred to as “package cars.”

Currently, the starting salary for a UPS package car driver is $18.75 an hour.

At 12 months, that rises to $19.50 an hour. At 24 months, it increases to $21 an hour. At 36 months, it jumps to $25 an hour. The average top rate is $37.06 an hour.

These local drivers earn, on average, roughly $23.82 an hour.

Local Package Delivery Driver Salary

That isn’t bad at all—but there is great news. The Package Division at the Teamsters labor union has reached a tentative agreement with UPS that could see a major jump in full-time package car driver wages.

Assuming the agreement goes into effect as planned on August 1st, 2022, UPS salaries for local delivery “brown truck” drivers will increase as follows:

  • $21/hour starting salary
  • $23/hour at 12 months
  • $24/hour at 24 months
  • $28. 75/hour at 36 months
  • $40.51/hour average top rate

Let’s say you are making $21 an hour starting out as a UPS “brown truck” driver, and you are driving 40 hours a week. Over the course of a year, you would earn $43,680. That is a pretty sweet starting salary!

Now imagine you stay with UPS for long enough to become one of their top-earning package car drivers. If you are earning $40.51/hour and working 40 hours a week, your annual salary would be $84,260.

As the Teamsters point out, this doesn’t even include the “excellent benefits UPS workers receive.”

We’ll get back to those momentarily. First, let’s take a look at what you could earn driving freight OTR for UPS.

UPS Freight OTR Pay

Now that you know what you could earn driving a “brown truck,” let’s talk about how you can earn even more driving for UPS.

If you are up for long-haul driving, you could earn competitive wages as a UPS OTR freight driver.

Once again, the company has its own terminology for referring to OTR trucks. It calls them “feeder vehicles.”

Indeed.com lists high salaries for UPS feeder vehicle drivers.

According to the site, the average UPS OTR driver salary is $72,945 per year. Glassdoor has this slightly lower at $68,342. Our average for 8 data points is $70,132.

UPS Freight Driver Median Salary

At the low end, drivers are making around $24,000 per year. At the high end, they are making around $148,000 per year.

How much you earn will depend on how long you have been driving for UPS as well as where you are located. Another way to make more money driving OTR for UPS is to haul doubles or triples.

UPS freight drivers enjoy great quality of life, and praise not only their high salaries, but also their consistent routes.

And once again, UPS offers excellent benefits to feeder truck drivers, just as they do “brown truck” drivers.

According to the company, this is 34% higher than the national average for most OTR drivers.   Our research shows that is slightly inaccurate as our industry average for 2021 is $59,158.   However, for new drivers, this would be a big bump to their 1st-year earnings versus the starting pay for most OTR trucking companies.

What States Pay The Best For UPS Drivers?

You might be wondering what the geographical breakdown is for UPS driver salaries.

For that information, we can turn to ZipRecruiter. For “UPS truck drivers,” the site lists a national average salary of $56,146 per year, with a low end of $20,000 per year and a high end of $80,500 per year.

It is unclear how much of this data refers to local drivers vs. OTR drivers, but we expect it is a combination of both.

The highest paying state at $62,505 per year is Washington State for a delivery driver. The lowest paying state at $40,675 per year is North Carolina.

Here is the full table of data for the top 10 highest paying states for UPS truck drivers:

Keep in mind that these are expensive cities to live in. So, while you can earn more, you also may have a higher cost of living.

Benefits Offered at UPS

Now that we’ve gone over detailed delivery driver pay information, let’s talk about benefits with United Parcel Service.

Indeed.com lists the following benefits for UPS feeder drivers:

  • Employee discounts
  • Weekly bonuses
  • Performance bonuses
  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Paid toll fees
  • Paid time off
  • Retirement plan

Each of these can add significantly to the money you can make as a UPS driver.

GlassDoor.com also lists:

  • Disability insurance
  • Accidental death & dismemberment insurance
  • Supplemental life insurance
  • Occupational accident insurance
  • Health savings account (HAS)
  • Mental health care
  • Retiree health & medical
  • Flexible spending account (FSA)
  • Healthcare on-site

Employees post satisfied reviews and high ratings for the benefits and bonuses offered by UPS. Some benefits increase the longer you are with the company, most notably paid time off (PTO) and opportunities to earn extra money.

UPS Driver Requirements

Here are the basic requirements you need to meet to be a UPS driver:

  • Be age 21 or older.
  • Pass a drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Be able to speak and write in English.
  • Be able to lift packages up to 70 pounds.
  • Maintain a clean driving record.

You will need to have the stamina to drive for 8 hours or more daily. If you become a freight driver, you will be away from home for 3-5 days at a time.

Something to note about applying for UPS driving jobs is that there is a catch. With such competitive salaries and benefits, most UPS drivers do not leave the company until they retire. Not only that, but UPS has a strong tendency to promote from within its own ranks.

That means that when UPS hires drivers from outside the company, those openings are very competitive. In fact, even if you already work for UPS and are trying to get promoted into a driver position, you will be up against a lot of strong applicants.

So, it is essential you go in with as competitive a resume as you can possibly have.

Do You Need a CDL to Drive for UPS?

You can apply to work as a “brown truck” driver at UPS without a CDL. But if you want a chance at a higher-paying OTR feeder vehicle job, yes, a CDL is a requirement.

If you do not yet have your CDL, check out our CDL Training 101 guide to learn the requirements to get a CDL. In that post, we also recommend some top CDL schools.

Additionally, you are going to need to get a Haz-Mat endorsement before you apply for the OTR division at UPS.

How Do You Become a UPS Driver?

The first step to becoming a UPS driver is to get your CDL and meet all other requirements.

Then, you have two options:

1-Apply directly for a job as a United Parcel Service brown truck or OTR driver.

Or …

2-Apply for an entry-level job at the company, and work your way up through the ranks. For example, you could start out as a package handler, and then later apply for a driving job when a vacancy appears.

It will take time to climb the ranks at UPS. But believe it or not, it could be a faster way to get into driving a feeder vehicle or brown truck at the company. United Parcel Service offers many different related jobs such as driver helper, freight packer, etc..

Once you have a job driving at UPS, however, you may be able to do it until retirement. That type of job security is hard to come by elsewhere these days.

Payscale For UPS Drivers: What You Can Expect To Be Paid

As a current or prospective UPS Delivery Driver, you might be wondering how your pay stacks up against others in your line of work. After all, factors like location and

experience can significantly affect your salary.

UPS Driver Salary by Percentile

The nationwide average salary for UPS drivers is $56,146 per year or
$27 per hour. That’s 65% more than the 2020 U.S. average hourly pay of $16.36 per hour.
However, the average isn’t the full story. Here are the average salaries of UPS drivers by percentile:

  • 10th Percentile: $36,000 per year ($18. 16 per hour)

  • 25th Percentile: $42,000 per year ($21.54 per hour)

  • 75th Percentile: $67,000 per year ($34.36 per hour)

UPS Driver Average Salary by State

For example, Massachusetts has the highest average income of $81,123 per year, while Mississippi has the lowest at $41,776. That means the average person in MA makes almost double that of the average person in MI.

What Is a UPS Driver?

UPS drivers are delivery drivers who are employed by UPS — a large truck delivery company. Similar to other delivery drivers, the job’s typical responsibilities include:

  • Driving specific routes in trucks or cars

  • Delivering packages safely to customers

  • Maintaining a timely schedule

  • Contacting customers

  • Reporting to managers

  • Returning vehicles to a designated hub

This job is available anywhere across the U.S., and job listings can easily be found on a number of job boards or on the UPS website. Although, do keep in mind that prospective drivers must pass a UPS package car driving test and a clean driving record to qualify for work.

UPS Driver Payscale FAQs

  1. What is the top pay for a UPS driver?

The top pay for a UPS driver is just over $80,000 per year. This is even higher than the 90th percentile of earners, whose pay averages at $76,000 per year ($38.97 per hour).
It’s important to note that being in the 90th percentile means this pay is extremely uncommon, and only the top 10% of earners will receive it. To earn this high of pay as a UPS driver, you would need to be highly experienced, qualified, and in a location that pays higher than average.
That’s because the average pay for a UPS driver is $56,146, or 30% less than the highest possible income.

  2. Is being a UPS delivery driver worth it?

Whether or not being a UPS delivery driver is worth it depends on your goals, desired income, and other factors. For example, if you’d like to earn a considerable amount more than the average American with minimal education requirements, this job could be an excellent fit.
However, if you have family or enjoy a certain level of work-life balance, becoming a UPS driver may not be the best decision. These workers are on the road constantly and are known to regularly pick up forced overtime. Such conditions can make it very difficult to spend time with your family or simply have time for yourself.

  3. What does 22.4 mean at UPS?

22.4 workers are combination workers that take on hybrid work at UPS. The job is technically full-time but does not require workers to work Saturday or Sunday. In general, all 22.4 drivers are guaranteed 8 hours of work per day on a five-day weekly schedule.
While the work of a 22.4 driver is similar to that of an RPCD (preparing, loading, and delivering packages), it’s important to note that the starting pay can be up to $5 per hour lower. On average,
22.4 drivers have a starting pay of $20.50 per hour, which can reach a top rate of $34.79 per hour.

  4. Do you get raises at UPS?

Yes, you will get raises at UPS. These raises are typically on a yearly basis and, while small, can amount to a large increase over time. Year to year, you can expect to see your pay increase by $0.25-$1.00.
However, it is worth noting that your hourly pay may also grow exponentially over time. For example, for those paid on current contracts, the average pay increase at the end of their first year can be around 4%. However, between years two and three, that pay increase can jump to an average of 19%.

Final Thoughts

Knowing the average salary of a UPS driver can be an important way to gauge your current income or to identify if you’d want to become one.
Overall, the average UPS driver makes just over $56,000 per year, with the bottom 10% of earners making $36,000 or less and the top 10% of earners making $76,000 or more. Whether or not you land closer to the bottom or the top of this range is dependent on several factors, including location, experience, and qualifications.
Overall, if you have a lot of free time and are looking to make a decent amount of money with minimal education requirements, becoming a UPS driver might just be the perfect job for you.

How Much Does A UPS Driver Make?

The Beginning Of UPS

We’ve all seen the big brown trucks with the yellow UPS logo, steadily making their way down the highways and local streets, delivering parcels and packages state to state and town to town. UPS refers to their organization as a global network of movement. This is not an exaggeration; UPS is worldwide and constantly moving.

UPS has been in business since 1907, starting out as the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington. Back then, deliveries were local and made by foot or with bicycles. It wasn’t until 1917 that this company branched out to Oakland California and became the United Parcel Service.

In the 1930’s UPS began to expand across the nation. By 1975 they were servicing all of the lower 48 and went international. In 1988 UPS Airlines was launched. Today, UPS delivers millions of packages all around the world every day.

How Do You Get a Job With UPS?

If your goal is to work for UPS your first stop may be with CSI (Cartage Services, Inc), a dedicated third-party provider that sometimes hires drivers to work with UPS. CSI is just one third-party company that may work with UPS and appears to be regional. This first step may be the means by which to get your foot in the door at UPS. This work, however, does not offer a dedicated route or a regular schedule. You may work any shifts, covering various routes as needed while the dedicated driver goes on vacation, takes a leave of absence, or for whatever reason is off of his or her route for any length of time. You may work first shift one day and third shift the next day. You will find yourself in unfamiliar territory regularly. And if you work hard, you might just find yourself one day being hired as a dedicated driver with your own route.

UPS also hires direct. Their website lists jobs across the country for local delivery drivers, tractor-trailer drivers, and freight drivers. You may enter search criteria and peruse their listings to see what jobs appeal to you, and you may also apply online. Once you click on a job listing you will see the job requirements and how to apply. It will also state whether this listing is through a third-party company that works with UPS. Their eligibility requirements are as follows;

UPS Driver Requirements

  • You must pass a DOT physical
  • You must pass a UPS road test
  • You must possess a class A CDL issued in the state in which you live, clear from any revocations or suspensions
  • If your license was ever suspended or revoked for illegal use of alcohol and/or drugs, it must have been reinstated for five years or more
  • If your license was ever suspended or revoked for any other reason (except above) it must have been reinstated for three years or more
  • You must comply with UPS appearance codes and wear the provided uniform
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have, at a minimum, a CDL for one year with interstate commerce experience
  • Must be able to lift 70 pounds and be physically able to load, unload, bend and stretch
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule
  • Union membership is required after 30 days of employment
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English
  • Doubles endorsement is desirable
  • *Dockworkers with CDL are required to have a HazMat endorsement, Doubles and Triples Endorsement, and Tanker endorsement
  • You must provide a copy of your motor vehicle driver abstract issued within the last 30 days

Because UPS is present in every state, they provide listings by location that will adhere to both federal and state law. Some of these requirements may not pertain to you depending on the state in which you are seeking employment. Visit the UPS website at the link below to search for job listings and to see which states those listings apply to.

The UPS Culture

UPS delivers more than 15 million packages to more than 220 countries and territories around the world every day. They have spent decades perfecting their trade and training their drivers for extreme efficiency, which is a top priority. According to a Mental Floss Article about UPS, there are strict rules that drivers must abide by, and intense training they must go through to be successful with UPS. Here are some of the highlights.

UPS Driver Training

  • UPS tracks each driver with the DIAD (Delivery Information Acquisition Device) which drivers carry to scan and check in packages. UPS also uses devices within the trucks that record everything from stops to drive time, speeds driven, accidents, and even which way the truck turns. They track nearly everything imaginable.
  • Potential UPS local delivery drivers must successfully complete an intense specialized training class called Integrad, the UPS “boot camp”
  • UPS strongly discourages backing up unless you’re backing into a loading dock
  • A good driving record with UPS will earn you rewards that increase in value the longer you maintain your good driving record
  • The big brown local trucks are known as “package cars” throughout UPS and they are neither heated nor do they have air conditioning or radios
  • It is common for dogs to attack local UPS delivery drivers. UPS even maintains tracking records of places where unfriendly dogs live.
  • UPS allows a neat mustache, but they frown upon other facial hair. Likewise, your hair may not touch your collar
  • The pay at UPS is, by many reports, very good. Drivers, on average, make $30 per hour
  • Seniority allows you to bid for better routes. Better routes are those that require a lot of driving (think rural routes) and not as many stops

Some of this information applies to local drivers who do not drive a big rig, but much of it applies across the board. Local drivers must have a class C license. One local driver, we’ll call him Jose, told me that the pay range in the Chicago area is $36 to $40 per hour, but says it is “very hard work”.

Tractor-trailer drivers are not normally paid by the hour. The salary report from Indeed took an annual salary and did the math to come up with an hourly wage. According to other reports, the average annual salary for a UPS tractor-trailer driver is $57,886.40.

Real UPS Drivers Speak

It is easy enough to paint the picture with broad strokes of positivity but it is equally important for those seeking information on working for UPS to see the full picture. With that in mind, what other truckers are saying about work they do or have done for UPS might help you to gauge whether a career at UPS is right for you.

Indeed also asks employees and former employees to rate the employer. UPS has a score of 3.9 out of a possible 5 and there are over 27,000 reviews from people with real experience. If you read enough of these you will see some common themes.

If you have been a truck driver for any amount of time, you know there are different types of drivers on the roads. My husband, who has been driving for nearly thirty years, can be a bit of a whiner. He recognizes this about himself and while he may verbalize complaints, he always gets the job done. Different drivers approach the job in different ways. With that in mind, here is a list of common responses I have gleaned from reading many, many reviews from current and former UPS employees.

UPS Driver Responses

  • There are many seasonal positions available. UPS often hires temporary employees to fill these positions
  • There are many part-time positions that will not pay well enough for you to support a family. I suspect people take these to get their foot in the door
  • Union membership is mandatory at UPS. One respondent reported that part-time workers pay $70 a month in dues while full timers pay $90 per month
  • Background checks are done by a third party. UPS claims to hire felons, but respondents say it depends on the felony. Convictions for theft, for instance, appear to disqualify applicants
  • By many accounts, working for UPS is not unlike being in the military. Everything they do is highly regimented and those who cannot toe the line do not last long
  • Numerous reviews said that management at UPS is interested in keeping quotas high and do not concern themselves with the well-being of employees. If drivers were not willing to perform to UPS standards, management said there were plenty of people waiting in line to work there. Many drivers felt bullied.
  • Many respondents said the pay and benefits offered at UPS are well worth the hard work they expect you to perform
  • Other respondents said that they made between $10-$13 per hour, they were part-time employees, and their supervisors were not keen to work with their schedule for school or another job
  • Supervisory positions pull you out of the union and make you ineligible for the union pay and benefits packages
  • It is common to work very long shifts, 12 hours or more.

UPS Videos

Youtube is a popular place to get a birdseye view of a driver’s perspective. UPS also posts videos that offer a glimpse into the culture of the company. Here are a few videos that you may find useful if you’re considering a career as a UPS driver.

Video: A UPS Driver Who Loves His Job

Video: A UPS Pre-trip Inspection

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

CDL:

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Dedicated Route:

A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You’ll often hear drivers say something like, “I’m on the Walmart dedicated account.”

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the “Southeast Regional Division” or “Midwest Regional”. Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. “The truck police” you could call them.

Interstate Commerce:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as “pups” or “pup trailers” because they’re only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

DWI:

Driving While Intoxicated

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck’s main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.

UPS Driver Says He Makes $40 an Hour, Sparking Debate

Several UPS drivers have gone viral after discussing their wages, which users online claim are higher than they would expect.

In a video with over 2.4 million views, TikTok user Danny (@dannyamosjr) stitches a video with user Mykol (@mykol_gummings), who claims that he makes $40 per hour driving for UPS.

“Nobody knows,” Mykol says in his video. “That’s the beauty of it.”

@dannyamosjr #stitch with @mykol_gummings #highpayingjobs #gogetit #moneytok ♬ original sound – Dannyamosjr

In Danny’s stitch, he goes on to explain that he discovered the high wages of UPS drivers after speaking with one outside of his building several years ago.

“He pulls out his pay stub, and I seen the six figure number and I said, ‘Say less,’” Danny recounts.

UPS drivers enjoy higher wages and considerable benefits due in large part to their union membership, which allows them to collectively bargain for things like wages and benefits.

“UPS has 86,000 U.S. drivers, all represented by one of the country’s largest unions, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters,” NBC News explained in 2006.

To back this up, Danny claims in comments that, while drivers can start at around $20 per hour, that number escalates to “41.47 straight time” with an “overtime rate a little over 62 an hour.” He claims this is a “4-year union pay progression.”

Additionally, UPS drivers enjoy benefits not seen by other drivers in the delivery industry. The same NBC News article noted that that job provides “a good income and benefits such as health care, a pension, stock options and long vacations.”

“This is a very good job,” industry analyst Art Hatfield of investment bank and brokerage Morgan Keegan told NBC. “It has all the kind of benefits associated with the U. S. manufacturing sector 20 years ago.”

Furthermore, while many union skeptics claim that unionization will hurt a company’s bottom line, data shows that the unionized workers of UPS proved advantageous during the onset of the pandemic and resultant worker shortages.

“Even while paying union workers almost twice what FedEx Ground drivers make, UPS earns a return on invested capital that’s more than double its rival’s,” Bloomberg writer Thomas Black noted in November 2021. “In the last full year, UPS and FedEx each had sales of about $84 billion; UPS banked $7.7 billion of operating income, while FedEx earned $5.9 billion. Investors have taken note: UPS shares have risen 27% this year; FedEx’s have dropped 9%.”

There are still issues with working at UPS. A TikTok user recently went viral after noting that UPS does not offer air conditioning in its delivery trucks, which can reach 140 degrees in summer. Furthermore, workers have signaled that issues like driver surveillance, excessive overtime, and inadequate pay for part-time workers will be discussed during its next round of contract negotiations, per Insider.

In comments, users expressed surprise at the high pay.

“Not me switching directly to Google ‘How to become a UPS driver?’” one user wrote.

“It’s so nice to see companies actually paying their employees what they deserve,” another added. “That’s hard work day in and day out!!”

Other users were quick to note that, while the pay is high, the work is difficult.

“You definitely make bank driving for them but the few drivers I know are married to their job,” a commenter shared. “It’s perfect for someone without a family.”

“Your back will let you know if it was worth it in a few years,” a second said.

The Daily Dot reached out to Danny via TikTok comment, Mykol via Instagram DM, and UPS via email.

Update August 27 10:10am CT: In an email to Daily Dot, a UPS spokesperson shared that full-time package delivery drivers average about $95,000 a year in wages.

“Total compensation for drivers (including health, welfare and pension contributions) is about $145,000 a year (on average),” they added. “After four years, a UPS driver earns the top rate and makes approximately $42 per hour.”

In addition, the UPS spokesperson claimed that tractor-trailer drivers earn $112,000 per year in wages on average, with an additional $50,000 in “health, welfare, and pension contributions.”

UPS also offers paid vacation time ranging from one week for a year of service to seven weeks for 30 years of service, the spokesperson shared..

“Nearly half of UPS full-time drivers (49%) have at least 15 years with the company and receive a minimum of 4 weeks of vacation per year,” they wrote. “Full-time drivers also receive an average of 18 additional days off (holidays, option days and sick days) per year.

The company also contributes to union-sponsored benefits plans for its U.S. employees.

“UPS makes contributions to many Teamsters-sponsored defined benefits plans that cover UPS’s U.S. employees,” they concluded. “Both full-and part-time UPS employees receive very generous healthcare benefits from these plans that require no premiums, no co-insurance, and very low co-pays.

Since 2019, Amazon has engaged 250 transportation contractors through the AFP project, which an Amazon spokesperson says provides companies with the opportunity to “start or expand a transportation business and create jobs for thousands of drivers. ” AFP contractors do not deliver online orders to your home, Amazon has a separate army of contractors for this, as well as Walmart ( WMT ) Inc, and United Parcel Service Inc ( UPS ), because of this, AFP contractors, especially small ones, face a shortage of drivers, because they are forced to compete with large companies. “There is a huge shortage of drivers, especially good drivers,” said Ebony McKinley, who owns the family business Seven Strong Trucking. The Phoenix-based company was among the first to join the AFP program in April 2020. The AFP contractor now operates 20 Amazon-branded trailers and employs 45 drivers.

According to Department of Transportation data obtained by Reuters, Amazon’s logistics division has purchased 1,395 trucks to transport trailers of goods across the US. And independent contractors such as Seven Strong Trucking must provide enough drivers for these trucks when the industry is facing a record shortfall estimated at 80,000 drivers. “Everyone feels that things are heating up,” she said.

The shortage of labor is especially acute for large transport companies, as there are increased requirements for their drivers: government departments require them to have a commercial trucking license, and insurance companies require them to have at least two years of driving experience. It also means skilled drivers can easily find new jobs with better pay amid record high demand for consumer goods.

In October, Seattle-based Amazon said that recruitment initiatives such as pay increases and bonuses and higher shipping costs resulted in additional spending of $2 billion last quarter. Amazon expects these costs to increase even more in the current quarter, which could wipe out the profits made during the peak sales season.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), trucker wages have not kept pace with inflation, resulting in “real” wages now at 70% of levels 1970s. Federal working hours regulations, the COVID-19 pandemic and other negative factors have prompted truck drivers to quit.

At Seven Strong, a driver’s starting salary is $22 an hour. The company applies incentives such as a $1,500 hiring bonus and overtime pay. The company’s base rate is in line with the U.S. average rate, which is $22.66 per hour, or $47,130 per year, according to the BLS. According to McKinley, payments from Amazon cover the cost of drivers.

    Recruit and retain

Reuters researched AFP contractor jobs on sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, and others and found that they offered $18-$27 an hour plus bonus, as well as mostly daytime work. Hiring bonuses range from $1,000 to $2,000.

Amazon told Reuters that it is advising its contractors on the minimum wage for drivers and encouraging them to raise it to attract and retain staff.

By dictating what drivers should be paid to independent contractors, Amazon is violating their rights, even as some states want drivers to be classified as full-time workers, industry and legal experts say.

Two of Amazon’s current AFP contractors, who chose to maintain confidentiality for fear of negative repercussions, told Reuters they have stable and predictable downloads. However, they also said that less experienced companies may be facing congestion and unexpected costs.

While the stability and reliability offered by companies such as Walmart or UPS may appeal to an older generation of more experienced drivers, small trucking company owners may be interested in expanding their business with Amazon.

“It’s hard to pass up the opportunity to hitch your wagon to an Amazon train,” said Paige Siplon, CEO of TeamOne Logistics, a 700-driver, 43-state, third-party logistics company that doesn’t work with Amazon.

    Competition intensifies

Amazon’s fourth-quarter forecast sees net revenue grow by 4-12% to $130-140 billion, which means the company’s freight volume will jump as well. According to Mark Woolfraat, president of consulting firm MWPVL International, that means Amazon will handle 32 million packages in the US on peak day.

Former Amazon shipping partner FedEx Corp ( FDX ) also reported lower quarterly earnings due to unforeseen expenses. Most of these expenses were related to the increase in the salaries of regular drivers in the ground transportation segment.

UPS and Walmart, who also have their own chauffeurs, could not have been spared this situation, but they did not report the same level of costs.

UPS, which considers Amazon its main customer, pays union workers well, which is why it seems to be able to avoid turnover and keep profits from falling.

Walmart, which employs more than 11,000 truck drivers, said additional supply chain costs slashed its US gross margin by 12 bps. in the last quarter.

Walmart’s transportation business has been in business for several decades, and during that time the company has been increasing salaries and paying out bonuses. It has a fleet of 8,400 trucks, both company-owned and leased, that transport goods within the company’s logistics network of 5,300 Walmart and Sam’s Club warehouses in the United States. Walmart, which hires mostly truckers, is promising a salary of $87,500, and that’s not counting $8,000-12,000 work contract bonuses. According to a Walmart spokesperson, while the usual $150 bonus for an extra day’s work, during the peak season it could be $250.

The idea of doing nothing and getting more is the right one! It turns out so – well done!
And the rest have to earn their daily bread with whatever they can.
On business. In DHL now you can calculate the salary at approx. 11┬ per hour. In the UPS – a little more, but not much. In DPD – 1500 gross tariff.

Pain can be stopped if you tell the investigator the whole truth

Yes, you are right, work is not sugar. But if you decide to try it, then only UPS.
Why UPS? The principle of operation for everyone, like UPS, DPD.DHL, GLS, TNT, is the same, deliver parcels and pick them up from customers.
But at least you will earn a little more with UPS. (at 14.19┬ +Speissen steuerfrei 6┬ per day+Überstunden 25%+ Urlaubslohn if on vacation + Urlaubsgeld einmalige auszahlung pro Jahr+ Weihnachtsgeld).
But of course the requirements are slightly different than, for example, in other companies.
But in other companies, guys work no less than in UPS, even for more.
The work is not easy, not everyone can, think carefully (they don’t pay for just that).
But if you succeed, you get involved, you understand how it’s all done, then everything is without problems, it’s a completely normal profession like any worker.

Don’t poke your nose, unless of course you want to become a slave. Stress, lack of money (except UPS), constant risk of losing rights.

    There are pros and cons.
+ Good money, excellent weinachtsgeld, decent vacation pay, unbefristete arbeitsfertrag, bonus system for finding new clients.
    – Physically not particularly easy, stress due to punctuality of delivery and collection of mail (for me it was especially a decision to change my workplace), since the mass of mail often simply does not physically allow mail to be delivered on time. We have to cheat, to which the authorities calmly turn a blind eye, if only not to return the money to customers. Treating workers like slaves…
