all that is important to know about tutoring

In today’s world, we often come across such a concept as tutoring. However, parents, students, and even the media use it not quite right. What is real tutoring? Does it meet your expectations and the needs of your children?

It is important to understand here that this concept includes several different services at once. Which ones? Superprof invites you to study tutoring in more detail and discuss its two derivatives: academic support and educational support, as well as talk about how such support differs from other private lessons.

When we hear about a tutor, a specific picture comes to mind: a teacher comes to a student and teaches him Russian, mathematics or some other subject. But this is a very traditional way of looking at things. More specifically, tutoring is individual assistance to a student in mastering the school curriculum, which can be both one-time and long-term.

Here it is important to pay attention to the following aspects:

  • Emphasis on the school curriculum. During these lessons, they do not just engage in some kind of discipline, but work out the knowledge that the student received at school, or fill in the gaps that have arisen.
  • Duration. Such individual lessons can be one-time, designed for several weeks or even for the entire academic year. It all depends on the goal and the tasks set for the tutor.

Choosing a tutor depends on the goals your child wants to achieve (unsplash photo)

The best teachers, tutors and coaches available for classes

Let’s go!

The origins of tutoring

It is difficult to say exactly when this specialty appeared, but if we go back to pre-revolutionary Russia, we will see that in many educational institutions there were teachers under whose guidance the students did their homework.

In Soviet times, this practice also existed. Those children who went to the after-school did tasks under the supervision of the teacher and could always turn to him for help if something did not work out. In fact, this was one of the forms of tutoring.

But now parents are less likely to rely on school teachers and are themselves looking for private teachers who could help their children with homework. And it is no coincidence. After all, such interest in tutors is also due to some social characteristics:

  • There are more working women than 20-30 years ago. Consequently, they can no longer monitor how their children are doing at home.
  • In general, parents spend more time at work, come home later and do not have time to do homework with their children in the evenings.

Why a tutor if there is a school?

Despite the popularity of tutoring in Russia, this question still torments some parents. They can be understood, because they studied even when the public education system met all the basic requirements of the time.

The current demand for tutors is connected not only with the increased attention of parents to the progress of the child, but also with the education system itself. Are you sure that foreign languages, mathematics or programming are taught at school at the modern level? Can a teacher prepare well for the exam in the Russian language all the students in the class at once?

And this is not so much about the quality of teaching in schools, but about the high requirements for students, which are not so easy to meet. In addition, the school system itself cannot quickly adapt to constant changes, introduce new teaching methods and ways of presenting material. And tutors in school subjects can.

Many people understand the importance of an individual approach, so they opt for additional private lessons (unsplash photo)

In this regard, more and more parents are trying to help their children and find a good private teacher for them. Even a first-grader sometimes needs a primary school tutor who will help to smoothly move from playing to learning activities. If we compare the performance of students who master the school curriculum without additional help, and those who regularly study with a tutor, then the latter have a higher level. And this is natural.

An individual approach to each student and a more modern way of delivering information help to make such extra-curricular activities more effective. They are an excellent support for classical public education and are able to arouse a child’s greater interest in the subjects being studied. And the student’s interest in learning is a very important point that every teacher and parent should think about.

Already at the stage of preparing a child for school, attention should be paid to the mood with which he relates to this event. His interest in the learning process itself is the key to success and good grades. Psychologists say that from about the age of 7, children begin to be interested in learning, for them this is a new stage of growing up.

At this stage, it is especially important to have a mentor nearby who will help maintain this interest, teach how to receive and analyze information, and apply the acquired knowledge. An experienced school preparation tutor, as well as tutors for primary and lower grades, will perfectly cope with these tasks.

In secondary school, the main focus of attention of students and their parents is shifting towards specific disciplines, because in a few years it will be necessary to decide on the choice of a future profession. And you can’t do without the help of a professional.

We have already said that tutors use more relevant methods in their work, but we note separately that they are not constrained by the framework of the school curriculum. Yes, the lessons are based on the material that takes place at school, but if a student is interested in a particular topic, this is a great opportunity to reveal it in more detail in an individual lesson, look at it from a different angle, or even discuss related topics.

School teachers have a clear plan to follow. It is important for them to give the maximum amount of information, but it is not always equally well perceived by all students in the class. Lessons follow a standard pattern, although everyone understands the importance of an individual approach. But in the conditions of a regular public school, where the classes average about 30 students with different levels of training, it is impossible to provide such an approach.

And then tutors in school subjects come to the rescue. It is they who are able to build a lesson in such a way as to take into account the current level of the student, his specific goals and objectives, the characteristics of personal perception of information, and simply hobbies and interests. An approach that takes into account all these factors helps to achieve results faster and to captivate the child with a particular discipline. It turns out that tutors cover all those needs that the school cannot satisfy.

Academic support: help with homework or improvement of knowledge?

The popularity of individual lessons is constantly growing, there are more and more new offers in this area. It’s no surprise that parents who are looking for a tutor for their children for the first time don’t always know exactly what to expect. The list of services is really wide. What to pay attention to?

The most basic task that parents set for a tutor may be to help with homework. It’s no secret that in elementary, middle and high school, children are often overwhelmed with homework assignments. They need a methodology that allows them to complete these tasks quickly and efficiently, and parents do not always have time to help their children in this matter. We offer to delegate it to professionals!

Of course, homework is an important part of the learning process, consolidating the material covered. But the child simply will not have a chance to do it correctly if he did not understand what the teacher explained on this topic in class. Consequently, another task for the tutor will be direct assistance in mastering the school curriculum, that is, explaining the topic covered and considering it from a different angle.

Another situation in which students find themselves is related to their lower level of knowledge in the subject. This is especially noticeable if the child, for example, moved to a new school or was simply ill for a long time. Returning to the lessons, it is difficult for him to independently catch up with the program and master the material that he missed. Here, the main mission of the tutor will be to draw up such a lesson plan that will help fill in all the gaps in knowledge and keep up with current topics.

These three aspects of a student’s academic support are equally important. In the long term, they all complement each other, help the student feel confident in school and get excellent grades.

What is the difference between academic support and educational support?

Now we have clearly defined the role of the tutor in the educational process and formulated its main tasks, which relate to the academic support of the student. But a separate type of service is educational support. Is it relevant for you and your children? Let’s try to find out.

The appearance of educational support is associated with the introduction of the Unified State Examination and the competition of applicants for places in prestigious universities, which begins long before the final exams. After all, admission to well-known universities in the country guarantees current graduates a good job, high salary and status. Every point counts, and parents are ready to invest time, effort and money so that their child has an advantage in admission.

Students who turn to tutors for educational support usually have no learning difficulties. They learn well the school curriculum and get good grades. Their goal is one-time or short-term assistance in solving specific problems:

  • preparation for olympiads or important tests
  • preparation for the Unified State Exam
  • improvement of the average score in the certificate
  • and as a result, admission to a prestigious educational institution

What is the difference between private lessons and tutoring?

At the beginning of the article, we already mentioned that tutoring as a term is not always used correctly. Many continue to confuse it with the usual private lessons, which are no less popular now. However, these concepts are very different, and not all teachers can do both equally well.

In short, a tutor is a person who helps with homework, explains incomprehensible points on a topic and provides support if it is necessary to increase the general level of knowledge in a subject. It is necessary for those students who have difficulty mastering the school curriculum, or those who need preparation for school.

But there are also those people who are students or have long since graduated from college, who are constantly striving for new knowledge. Their main desire is to learn. They are ready to constantly develop, learn foreign languages or those subjects that they have never studied before. It is they who take private lessons, and not always from professional teachers.

The main goal of such people is to gain knowledge and enjoy the learning process itself. They do not chase grades, do not try to prove anything or compete with someone, so they are looking for a private teacher who is close in spirit. It is important for them that the person who will lead them to new discoveries is on the same wavelength with them.

Eight thoughts about tutors

I read an article about the ban on tutoring in China. As part of a program to reduce homework, the country has banned being a tutor and hiring tutors. At the same time, no one canceled the high scores of entrance examinations to secondary schools and universities. It’s scary to imagine the size of the shadow market for teaching there now. And I also think about the increased cost of the services of everyone who dares to do this, and the cohesion of the relationship “parent tutor”, which inevitably increased with the known harshness of punishments in China.

In connection with this, I thought about my own attitude towards tutoring. And I decided to fix it just in case and make it public.

1. The parent is responsible for the education of his child (this is from the Constitution).

And there are no schools that cover all the possibilities for education (I don’t know any). Therefore, it is important to understand WHAT exactly the child receives at school (why does he go there), and what needs to be added for a successful educational movement.

2. A tutor can not only simplify, but also complicate student learning at school.

If he ran ahead with the child according to the program (which, by the way, contradicts the etymology of the word “tutor”), then the student will be bored in the lessons, and this is a direct path to loss of interest and waste of time. If the student is used to the fact that the tutor explains to him everything that was studied in the lessons, then the need to work in the lesson to understand what is happening (ask questions, turn on, write down) as the skill disappears from the life of the student.

3. A tutor must be selected for a specific task.

Olympiads, working on past topics, deepening general human or development of specific learning skills, preparing for admission, and so on. It seems that it makes sense to specify the goal and objectives as accurately and specifically as possible at the very start of cooperation (fix it in writing – at least in messages) both for the clarity of the plan, and so that later the movement can be analyzed.

It is also better to immediately stipulate the basic rules – the presence and obligation to complete homework, a civilized way of canceling classes, educational materials, according to which the movement is carried out. It seems that experienced tutors stipulate all this before the start of classes.

4. Can a student choose their own tutor?

Should a tutor be charismatic-modern or classical – demanding-giving a base? Is it possible to combine all this at once in one person? Live or remote lessons?

It is clear that all this depends on the tasks to be solved, the specific situation, request, opportunities and the “chemistry” that arises (or not) between people. I’m afraid there is no universal answer here. But in the matter of tutoring, there are definitely more opportunities for searching and experimenting than when choosing a school. And the risk is much less.

5. Are group tutoring sessions effective? Or is it fundamentally tete-a-tete?

Here, too, much depends on the specific circumstances – and not only on financial capabilities. There are teenagers who work in a group much more seriously and recklessly.

6. Is a tutor needed for motivated students?

Or will they cope on their own, and the task of a tutor is just to raise motivation, direct, infect?

When I was working with students, seeing those who themselves wanted to meet, did everything and strived for development, was much more pleasant and productive for everyone. But some colleagues find a lot of drive in working with just the unmotivated.

7. I am convinced that getting 90+ points on the exam in mathematics (physics, chemistry, biology I know for sure about these content-based exams), working only in the classroom or moving independently, is very, very difficult.

Such talents certainly exist, but they are rare. I don’t see any crime or universal solution here. Too many factors affect the final one-time result.

8. In an ideal world, a tutor and a teacher know each other’s tasks, do not compete, but, acting complementarily, strengthen the student’s movement.

For example, a school teacher immerses you in science, teaches you to see connections, develops the language of the subject, and so on, while a tutor prepares for specific exam formats and questions. Or vice versa.

After reading (or scrolling through) all these reflections, someone will ask: why did I write all this?

I ask myself the same question.
