How I became a tutor

I graduated from the linguistic department of the Southern Federal University, where I studied two languages ​​- English and German. We didn’t have any specialization, and after graduating from the university we had to decide which area to go into – translation or teaching.

‍

It so happened that fate directed me to the second path. I started working as a teacher in one of the language schools in Rostov-on-Don. At school, I studied face-to-face with small groups of our students and at the same time began to work as a tutor, that is, individually with students. At first it was full-time tutoring, and then online tutoring. Later, I worked as an English tutor, and for the last six months I have been the curator of tutors at the Foxford online school.

What does the tutor do

The main task of the tutor is to help the student solve the problems that he asked, so the specific actions of the tutor are highly dependent on these tasks. Working with preschoolers is very different from working with schoolchildren or adults; preparing for the Unified State Examination or DWI in a foreign language at Moscow State University is different from mastering fluent conversational speech. The tutor individually plans the lesson, selects materials and resources that correspond to the goals of the student.

As a tutor I have worked with very different students, from 3 year olds to 70 year old men who wanted to learn the language in order to move to Germany. Sailors and pilots approached me with the task of mastering professional vocabulary. And, of course, with each of them I built training in different ways. With the pilots, we dealt with the peculiarities of their work and learned the terms. The work with the kids took place mainly in the form of a game, with the use of cartoons and songs.

Our tutors, for example, most often work with the following queries:
‍

• Help with the school program. It happens that the student was sick and missed the topic, then he catches up with the tutor. Sometimes you need help with difficult material.

‍

• Preparation for the OGE or EGE.

‍

• Olympic training. Many of our students participate in competitions at various levels and turn to tutors because they have outgrown the school curriculum.

‍

• Help with homework. This is a new direction that has recently appeared in Foxford, and it is also in demand. If you urgently need to do homework, but you can’t figure it out on your own or with your parents, a tutor will help.

Areas of work

A tutor may be engaged in a particular area of ​​work, or may be a generalist. Specialization can be subject – for example, we have a biology tutor who is very well versed in molecular biology, he is approached by those who need to study this particular topic at a deep level, although, of course, he can also teach general biology.

Another type of specialization is according to the tasks of the student. There are tutors who like to prepare schoolchildren for the USE, they have their own developments, methodological techniques, and their students get very good scores on the USE. There are, on the contrary, tutors who like to work with elementary or middle school students and help them master the school curriculum. Difference from a teacher

Learn new things. The work of a tutor involves immersion in different topics, depending on the profession of the student, his interests, needs. We learn new words and rules using examples from different fields. Thanks to my work, I expanded my horizons, learned a lot of interesting things.
