Tsumiki Preschool – Japanese Academy of San Diego

Tsumiki Preschool is a Japanese instructed preschool and extended day care program for children ages 2 to 5. We are committed to providing each child with stimulating daily experiences to enhance personal growth. We believe early childhood learning experiences are vital to ensure academic success in later school years. It is also important to grow socially, emotionally, and physically for well-rounded outcomes of human development. Therefore, we provide challenging, yet appealing curriculum for each child so all children’s interests and emotions are respected. We also strive to fill children’s experiences with the culture and traditions of Japan to acquire Japanese language development and understanding.

Classes

Penguin Class: Ages 2-3

Focuses on learning to listen to the teacher’s instructions, build Japanese vocabulary, follow simple rules and routines, and manners for eating. The penguin class also introduces children to scissor use, utensil use, and promotes independence in self-help tasks. Toilet training is also focused on in this class.

 

Shirokuma Class: Ages 3-4

Building on skills acquired in the penguin class, the 3-4 year old class focuses on enhancing concentration by listening and performing three step tasks, understanding longer stories, enhanced vocabulary building, and hiragana reading skills. Numbers from 1-10 will be the focus of math skills and build- ing understanding of 1 to 1 correspondence. Children are also introduced to more sophisticated art projects including origami and extensive scissors use. Children will also be taught and ex- pected to follow rules for using certain tools and games played with peers.

 

Iruka Class: Ages 4-5

The iruka class focuses on more complex learning. Children will learn how to read easy picture books independently, listen and retell stories read by the teacher, and start writing hiragana letters. Children will also be focusing on grouping objects in groups of 5 and understanding how to build 5. Games with multiple rules requiring cooperation with one another are played and multistep origami will be taught in class. Leadership and responsibility will also be introduced to the children by designating a teacher helper each day, with tasks to perform for peers and teacher.

 

Curriculum

Each class will be provided with age appropriate materials and will not only focus on fundamentals of academics but also basic daily routines and self-help skill tasks. We will promote independence for task performance and peer cooperative play throughout the curriculum.

  • Language/Reading: Group conversation, books, introducing and expanding vocabulary, learning letters, sounding and making letter associations.
  • Music: Singing, dancing, rhythm instruments, finger play, and rhythmic dancing.
  • Social Study: Learn about family, people of different cultures, maps and holidays, enhancing social skills with peers through interactive play.
  • Art and Craft: Experiment with different art media and working materials. Emphasis on learning to use materials (scissors, crayons, paint, glue, etc.) appropriately for both structured and creative craft time.
  • Math: Learning numbers, size, objects, shapes and counting. Learning colors and mixing colors, learn how to use the calendar.
  • Science: Learning with senses, earth, plants, seasons, animals and insects. Themes for science will be introduced by following the seasons, holidays and cultural events.

Classes

Kindergarten

Japanese

We start the year with assignments and group activities to strengthen thinking, listening, and comprehension skills. The goal is to complete Japanese Ministry of Education’s 1st grade curriculum by the end of the school year. Students will learn hiragana, katakana, reading comprehension from short sentences to paragraphs, writing sentences to full journals.

English

English class will start in the second semester of the school year. Kindergartners will begin with two hours of English per week. The focus will be to learn the alphabet, phonics, increase vocabulary and short sentence comprehension.

Math

JASD Students will learn and understand numbers1-100. Addition, subtraction, reading time, using clocks, understanding lengths, shapes, and categorizing. The goal will be to complete the Japanese ministry of education 1st grade material.

 

1st Grade

Japanese

Students will start the year reviewing material learned during kindergarten and continue with Japanese ministry of education 2nd grade material. We will focus on writing letters and kanji neatly with proper strokes and correctly reading sentences. Students will also focus on summarizing books read in class and enhancing reading comprehension. The goal will be to complete the 2nd grade material by the end of the school year.

English

English hours will increase to 4 hours per week. Students will build on material learned in kindergarten and focus on reading and writing short sentences, continue with increasing vocabulary, and strengthen English reading comprehension.

Math

The goal will be to complete the2nd grade material by the end of the school year. The focus for the 1st graders will be to learn lengths and time, times tables, multiplication, shapes, liquid measurements, and understanding numbers up to 1000.

2nd, 3rd Grade

Japanese

3rd and 4th grade material from the Japanese ministry of education will be covered. Students will also start learning science and social studies in conjunction with English, for terms to be learned in both languages. Students will focus on differentiating words and how they are used in context, increase vocabulary, learn about sentence structure and grammar more in depth.

English

English hours will increase to 6-8 hours a week for 2nd and 3rd graders. The focus for English will be to enhance gram- mar, reading comprehension, and writing skills. Daily journal writing will be required for all students. Writing projects such as, biographies, book reports persuasive essays, and informational writing will also be required.

Math

3rd and 4th grade material from the Japanese ministry of education will be covered. The math curriculum will include 2 and 3 digit multiplication, time, division, and fractions.

Social Studies

Students will learn about the community they live in, the traditions, about families, and culture. The curriculum will focus on what resources and environment students live in and be able to identify these in both Japanese and English.

Science

Students will learn about plants, animals, weather and life cycles of nature. Students will learn how to gather information through books and other resources to summarize in their informational writing for English.

Other Subjects

Music

Students will learn how to use various instrument such as the xylophone, drums, triangle, and piano to orchestrate songs for 2 performances held during the school year.

Calligraphy

Japanese calligraphy class is held once a week to enhance focus and writing skills in Japanese. This class enables students to learn proper strokes with different types of writing tools. This is also an additional Japanese cultural art students will be able to experience year round.

Civic & Moral Education

Students will think about and reflect on moral, ethics, and behaviors during this classes. Stories and videos will be utilized to bring attention to the topic of the class.

Outdoor Science & Social Studies

Students will think about and reflect on moral, ethics, and behaviors during this classes. Stories and videos will be utilized to bring attention to the topic of the class.

Japanese Community Events

Our students are frequently invited and participate in events held by the Japanese community. Students will have the opportunity to perform and do presentation sat senior festivals, and help welcome the Japanese defense training force into San Diego.
