How to create a pirate treasure chest with the Paint Tool SAI

Who doesn’t love playing games? In this tutorial, we will draw a game object that can also be used as a game icon. The main theme is a pirate or underwater icon and our subject is a treasure chest. We’ll work in Paint Tool SAI using all the useful tools and techniques like filters to adjust colors, simple tricks to work faster, and other neat stuff. nine0033

1. Sketch out the treasure chest

Step 1

Starting with a new canvas , 3200px wide and 9014px high . The basic shape of the treasure chest is a cube, so let’s start building the perspective of this shape, which has all sides parallel to each other. However, in this case, we can make the edges of the cube not exactly equal, because our chest is not a regular cube. Take tool Marker with 100% density and 20px or any other tool that is comfortable to work with. I use a marker because now we don’t need a lot of detail and can only focus on very simple shapes, and the Marker tool allows us to do just that.

Step 2

Step 3

Experiment with the shape of the object and when you’re happy with it, add more details like gold, pearls, diamonds, and whatever else you think can be found in a treasure chest. 2. Create line art from the sketch

Step 1

Now we can start drawing line art from the sketch. First, merge all the sketch layers into one and reduce the opacity of this layer to about 15-20% . This way you can see the parts you are working on more clearly and you won’t mess up the new lines. Secondly, take the Crayon 9 tool0148 or if you don’t have it in your version of Paint Tool SAI use Pen tool instead. Check the settings on the image and make sure you are using a small brush with a soft angle.

You must use separate layers for each color, so when you want to change one color to another it will be very easy. .To quickly fill areas with color, you can use one simple method. Also try different background versions. I liked the light better and decided to stick with it.

4. Adding shadows, lights and reflections

Step 1

First let’s make some basic shadows. Take air brush with a soft, cool color. You can choose this pale purple or any other option. Make a new layer under the line art layer and set it to mode on Multiply with about 60% opacity of . Pick a spot where the light comes from, such as the top left corner of the canvas. And with that in mind, apply shadows to the chest and background.

Step 2

This time we’ll add lights. Once again create a new layer and place it under the layer with line art but on top of the shadow layer. Set it Mode to Overlay with 70% opacity Keep in mind the light source you chose earlier and start adding lights with Air Brush . You can experiment with colors such as soft purple, orange and beige.

Step 3

5. Treasure Chest Detailing

Step 1

We will start at the top and work our way up the drawing. This step is about creating more details and adding textures, so let’s do that. I suggest adding cracks to the chest and draw an outline. Use Air Brush with a soft angle for this kind of work.

The close-up shows that I’ve hidden the line art, added more reflections and cracks, and cleaned up the lines.

Step 2

You go from the most basic shadows and lights to detail. When you draw starfish, blend them into the drawing, adding more reflections if needed. I made these stars blue, but you can make them coral, yellow, purple, or whatever. Try different colors; they can create a greater effect. nine0033

Step 3

There are different types of treasures in the chest, and we will make them separately, but don’t forget to add reflexes to better combine them. So, for the gold, add more shadows for depth and hide the outlines. For the diamonds, we’re adding some highlights to make them look like they’re shining. Step 4

The pearl is a simple sphere, so you draw it the same way. Three primary colors will suffice: one midtone, one for highlights, and one for shadows, according to the light source. Take air brush and start applying colors in a smooth motion. For better color matching, use the Water or Blur brushes.

Step 5

To make the other pearls faster, we’ll use a simple trick. Once you make one pearl, just copy it and paste it in the places of the other pearls. Adjust their sizes according to the linear image. You’ll notice that these new pearls look separate from the rest of the image, so we need to fix that. To smooth them out more smoothly, we’ll add reflections from nearby objects and more shadows, and we’ll examine their outlines. nine0033

Step 6

And we’re done! But right now our treasure chest looks a little blurry and doesn’t have enough contrast, so let’s work on that.

6. Adjusting the color of the chest with treasures

Step 1

to start, Create New layer on top of all layers and set mode Overlay 70% of the immunity . Use soft colors to add vibrance to the image. Experiment with different colors to get the best effect. nine0033

With our next step, we will illuminate the parts where the light source hits directly. Create a new layer on top of the others and set its mode to to Luminosity . Take white or soft yellow and apply it to the most well-lit areas of the chest and treasure. Then set the layer mode to 20% opacity .

Step 3

The next step is to apply the Paint Tool SAI filters. And the first filter we’ll be using here changes Hue and Saturation . So you can easily adjust the colors in your drawing just by playing around with these settings. Make sure Preview is enabled so you’ll see the changes right away. Play around with the settings or just add +15 to to saturate . This will add more colors to the flowers.

Step 4

The second filter will change the brightness and contrast of the picture.
