how much do German train drivers earn
Europe
Zagraninfo
Given the interest of many of our compatriots in the German labor market, it is worth talking about earnings in the railway industry. What is the salary of a machinist in Germany and what are the features of its payment?
Photo — railtech.com
Financial indicators in different categories
Salary is strictly determined by the contract and its terms, which are signed by both parties, i.e. employer and employer. In this case it is Deutsche Bahn. So, the maximum that a machinist in Germany earns is a little more than 3,500 euros per month. This amount is before taxes. It is also worth considering that this is the highest salary level in this profession, which implies that these employees are the most qualified and experienced: most of them have worked at Deutsche Bahn for at least a quarter of a century.
As for novice machinists, they earn a relatively modest 2,300 euros for Germany, again before taxes.
Over time, the salary of a train driver in Germany is gradually increasing. With five years of experience, train drivers already earn just under 2,500 euros. If they take on additional responsibilities, such as training other workers, they can earn up to 3,200 euros. With 10 years of experience, the minimum salary reaches 2,600 euros, and the maximum is 3,300 euros. With 15 years of experience under your belt, you can earn from 2700 to 3400 euros, and with 20 years of experience your salary range will increase to 2800-3500 euros gross.
Not the highest salary
In Germany, if you drive a train and work for another railway operator, will you earn more? The short answer is no. The salary at Deutsche Bahn is roughly the same as for all other regional and intercity routes operated by other companies.
However, things are different in a number of other European countries. According to data compiled back in 2007, Germany lagged far behind many of its neighbors in terms of average wages for train drivers. Figures were compiled and presented in 2007 based on income reports provided by trade unions representing machinists in each respective country.
► See also: How Much Do Drivers Earn in the US
With Germany’s GDP growing from 2007 to 2015 (approximately 10%), wage growth for German train drivers over the past eight years is absolutely on schedule. The average train driver in Germany was paid about 2,500 euros in 2007, compared to just under 2,750 euros in 2015. At the same time, the trend of earnings concerns workers of all ages.
Of course, for most of us, these amounts seem quite substantial. However, it is worth considering the fact that the cost of living in German cities is much higher than ours. In addition, the fact that colleagues in neighboring countries earn much more makes German machinists periodically fight for their rights, including through strikes and other extreme measures.
