Academy Town Square: Science Writer Ed Yong in conversation with Maiken Scott
Wednesday, October 12, 6:30–8 p.m.
$20 general admission, $15 students, Academy Members, WHYY Members
Advance online purchase required
Co-presented by The Pulse/WHYY and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University
The world is full of sounds, smells, sights and textures – but each creature experiences these riches in very different ways. Science journalist Ed Yong’s latest book, “An Immense World,” offers fascinating insights into the “sensory bubbles” of animals all around us. Elephants that scan for clues with their trunks, snakes that smell with their tongues, butterflies with ears on their wings or beetles that can sense fire… Yong invites us to see what is around us with new eyes.
He’ll talk about his new book with Maiken Scott, host of WHYY’s health and science show The Pulse. They will also discuss Ed’s important coverage of the Coronavirus pandemic, which was followed by thousands of readers around the globe.
Ed Yong is a Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer on the staff of The Atlantic, where he also won the George Polk Award for science reporting, among other honors. His first book, “I Contain Multitudes,” was a New York Times bestseller and won numerous awards. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, National Geographic, Wired, The New York Times, Scientific American and more. He lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife, Liz Neeley, and their corgi, Typo.
Maiken Scott hosts WHYY’s The Pulse, a national health and science radio show and podcast that explores the people and places at the heart of health and science. Since its launch in December 2013, The Pulse has crafted a unique, “ground-level” approach to telling compelling stories and breaking down complicated issues.
WHYY is Greater Philadelphia’s leading public media provider and PBS/NPR member station, serving southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and all of Delaware.
