Here’s what people have to say

4.7 out of 5 stars

I absolutely love this school and the teachers. They are very attentive and very good at communication and keeping me informed.

Very happy with the teachers, directors, and communication. He loves attending and we trust the staff very much. Cost is extremely high and not competitive with other childcare. If we ever were to leave, this would be the reason.

Great director and lead staff

I love the brightwheel app. The respose I get from the teachers is almost immediate. I also recieve notifications and reminders for my children. The school has worked with our schedules and it has been easy to transition my children from 1/2 days to full days and to all week.

Verified Shopper

The teachers are very caring. Genuinely care about the children. And my grandkids love all of them!

Verified Shopper

My children didn’t attend childcare until they were 19 months old. The staff and teachers were wonderful at helping my children overcome separation anxiety. The brightwheel application on my phone helped to aliievate my anxiety by allowing my to check on their progress throughout the day and communicate with the school. My children get excited to go to school each day and see their teacher.

Verified Shopper

Wonderful environment and awesome staff. My daughter loves to go school. Would like to thanks all the staff for their support.

Verified Shopper

I have nothing but positive comments based on our experience. I can’t express the peace of mind I have knowing I am leaving my children in the hands of teachers who care about them. My son has grown socially and his language has blossomed. My daughter is still an infant and the teachers made my transition back to work so much easier than it could have been.

Verified Shopper

The staff are professional and nurturing. All the teachers and staff interact with my children and know their progress. My children have never been in childcare before the age of 1 1/2, so all the teachers worked with them to feel safe and comforted. Now they walk into school excited and without any fears.

Provides safe and clean environment for child care and learning.

Meet Our Staff

Stevi Barger, Director

Education: Associate’s Degree in Psychology with a Minor in Child Development

Certifications: CPR/First Aid/AED

I’ve been with La Petite since 2012 and I absolutely LOVE children! I love to watch them learn and grow. My day is complete when I have a little person telling me they love me! I am married and have two beautiful children, and a very special dog that is like my third child!

Meet Our Staff

Syerra Anderton, Assistant Director

Education: CDA

Certifications: CPR/First Aid/AED

I’m originally from Waco, Texas (and a southern girl at heart) but I’ve lived here for a little over 10 years now. I have been with La Petite for six years and I have immensely enjoyed working with our young ones and seeing their families! I started as a floating assistant and slowly worked my way through every room and age group. I like watching the children explore and learn as they grow! I know they’ll go on to do amazing things! In my spare time I enjoy being with friends and family.

COVID-19 Procedure and Protocol

With the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, TDC has made additional protocols to our daily routines to help keep staff and families safe. All procedures and protocols must be followed. Anyone not following these procedures will be terminated from care or employment. Policies and Procedures are subject to change due to public health concerns. TDC takes all actions towards COVID-19 very seriously. The policies and procedures below are designed to keep members of the community safe and are only in effect during COVID-19.

  • Adults do not have to wear masks in our facilities unless Shawnee County COVID-19 Community Indicator Rating is in Substantial or High range. TDC Families are still welcome to wear masks in the facility.
  • Children, teachers, and parents will receive health checks at drop off and at pick up.
  • If children show any signs or symptoms, they must be sent home and cannot return to the center without a doctor’s note.
  • Parents and staff are not to enter the building if they are not feeling well. Parents should be prepared to find alternate transportation for their child. For best practice, parents should keep their child at home if they show any signs or symptoms of COVID-19. Parents should report of any self-quarantine their family might experience to Center Directors.
  • Hand Washing should take place for all members of the center on arrival, before leaving the facility, and every hour in the facility.
  • TDC encourages staggered drop off and pick up to maintain social distancing and gathering protocols.

Any important updates and notices pertaining to your child(ren)’s center will be sent to you via email and Procare: Childcare App.  We will keep operating occurring to recommendations made by SNCO and KDHE protocol and procedure.

Please see our PARENT Tab for full COVID Handbook.

TESTIMONIALS

Happy Parents

“My children started with TDC in 2016, and because of generous scholarship donations we have been able to continue long-term, stable and supportive care.  Without this assistance, I would be at risk for losing my childcare services, and ultimately my job. I am so appreciative.”
~ Cade R.

“Thank you for working with my family to secure this educational component, and I’m so grateful that my son can continue at TDC. It’s a place we both love!”

~ Denene T.

“We love the teachers and director at our center so much. If we are ever blessed with another baby, we wouldn’t think twice about sending them to a TDC site.”

~ Jen L.

COMMUNITY PARTNER

Child Care Aware of Kansas

TDC is the proud recipient of a Child Care Aware of Kansas grant. The Hero Relief Program provides child care subsidies to eligible health care workers, first responders, and other essential workers.

We sincerely appreciate this generous contribution that can be used for:

*Sustainability stipends for all KDHE-Licensed child care and relative providers to help pay for ongoing expenses like food, supplies, labor and rent/mortgage.

*Revenue replacement subsidies for DCF enrolled child care providers

*Supply grants to assist with pandemic related expenses like gloves, disinfectants, soap and other      necessary items.

*Emergency worker support bonuses – a one-time bonus to providers who care for children of health care workers and first responders

Community Partner

Kansas Health Foundation

Of the 477 statewide funding proposals, TDC was one of the 91 recipients focused on COVID-19 response and recovery.  A portion of money goes toward supplies for cleaning and disinfecting while another portion goes toward child care sustainability.

The Kansas Health Foundation is a philanthropy dedicated to improving the health of all Kansans. For more information about the Kansas Health Foundation, visit www.kansashealth.org

Community Partner

Topeka Community Foundation

Our agency is proud to accept the awarded in a Shawnee County Coronavirus response grant.

These funds are awarded so TDC can offset tuition costs by offering a free week to first responder families during the first two months of the 2020 pandemic.

MAJOR FUNDING AGENCY & COMMUNITY PARTNER

Organizations, like TDC Learning Centers, are accountable for making sure United Way dollars are used to make an impact in the areas of Early Childhood, Youth Development, Financial Stability plus Health and Wellness.

Our programs seek to keep teen parents in school, and keep all parents involved. We do this by hosting a variety of volunteer opportunities, parent-teacher conferences, as well sending home educational materials on a regular basis. For many of our younger mothers, the child’s teacher and center manager provide them with the only classes on parenting and child development that they have ever received. This is a valuable gift we can always provide to our families.

Another unique feature of our programs is that because we receive community support, like that from the United Way of Greater Topeka, we do not have to limit the number of SRS child care subsidy families. We can also provide sliding scale scholarships to those who don’t qualify but otherwise might not be able to afford quality care. In addition, we assist struggling families by directing them toward various available resources.

The funding provided allows organizations like ours to reach goals that make a real difference. United Way of Greater Topeka has the strength and resources to create positive, sustainable change in our community and we are extremely grateful for the ongoing support from this vital partner.

Chamber Member

Proud To Be A Community Partner

The Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce, GO Topeka, Visit Topeka and Downtown Topeka, Inc. have similar goals, and the names are often used interchangeably.

Boards of those four organizations have signed off on establishing the new Greater Topeka Partnership beginning January 1.

TDC Learning Centers, Inc. got approval from it’s Board to join Greater Topeka Partnership as a nonprofit member on January 20, 2018.

    Already Operating a Child Care

    Home-Based Child Care

When operating a child care facility, providers should have a current temporary permit (TP) or license posted from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. In addition, a current operating certificate should be obtained from the Shawnee County Health Department. Both of these documents are required to legally operate a child care facility in Shawnee County.

Licensed and Group Child Care Facilities

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment provide the most current regulation guidelines and other helpful information. This licensed category of care allows up to 10 children, unless an exception is granted by KDHE. However, the more children being cared for under the age of 18 months, the limit of children allowed drops. A group child care facility can have up to 12 children, unless an exception is granted by KDHE. The different categories and options can be found in the regulation guidelines.

Any questions regarding capacity should be directed to the Shawnee County Health Department’s Child Care Licensing program. It is each child care facility’s responsibility to be in compliance with capacity at all times.

    Child Care Centers and Preschools

Facilities should obtain a current license from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment as well as the current Shawnee County Operating Certificate.

Program Directors do not have to be on site during all operating hours, but should work at least 35 hours per week in the facility. However, when a Program Director is not on-site, there should be a person next in line that is responsible for the operations of the program.

    School Age and Drop-In Programs

How to Find Child Care in Shawnee County

    Finding Child Care Facilities

There are hundreds of child care providers in Shawnee County. The Shawnee County Health Department Child Care Licensing program inspects all licensed/group child care facilities, centers/preschool facilities, school aged programs (including summer camps) and drop-in programs in Shawnee County.

To find a listing of facilities from homes, centers, preschools, school age and drop-in programs in Shawnee County visit Child Care Aware or call them at 785.357.5171.

It is important to conduct thorough interviews with any potential provider/facility and whenever possible, drop-in on a regular basis to your facility. This is a great way to see how your child is doing, how staff interacts with your child and how the program operates. If you are provided with a contract to sign, read it carefully and only sign when you fully understand the document. It is important to always keep a signed copy for your records.

Choosing a Child Care for Your Family

If you are looking to enroll your child(ren) into child care, it is very important that you choose a licensed facility. When a facility is licensed they are required to follow state regulations and statues and are subject to inspections.

To research a facility in Shawnee County to include prior inspection reports visit Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Kansas Law requires child cares to have a license under K.S.A. 65-501. License or temporary permit required: exemptions. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, corporation or association to conduct or maintain a child care facility for children under 16 years of age without having a license or temporary permit.

“Historical topic”: a section of rhetoric or a field of comparative studies?

I would like to clarify the meaning of a concept that has long been part of comparative terminology. We are talking about topos – a term that in philology has at least two completely different understandings: literary and rhetorical. It was introduced into literary criticism in 1948 by Ernst Robert Curtius. Topos in his understanding is a verbal “cliché”, general and impersonal “schemes of thought and expression”, which have an intertemporal and intercultural character. Topoi, in the interpretation of Curtius, do not care about national differences, do not care about genre differences, do not care about any “-isms”: classicism, romanticism, etc. Thus, the topos of “the world as a theater” (theatrum mundi) is discovered by Curtius in antiquity (by Plato), in the Middle Ages (by John of Salisbury), in the Renaissance and modern times – by Luther, Ronsard, Shakespeare, Calderon – and even at the beginning of the 20th century – by Hugo von Hoffmannsthal 1 . So, the historical range of existence of the topos is from antiquity to the 20th century; genre range – from epigram to drama (albeit with a predominance of the latter), national range – from Greece, through Spain, France, Germany, to foggy Albion.

The transfer of comparative analysis to the level of topoi, as we see, opens up new vistas for the comparativist. But what is this level? It seems to Curtius that he has discovered a special impersonal layer of verbal reality, which lies below personal styles, below all the accepted divisions of European literature – divisions into eras, styles, trends. Here are some of his definitions from the work “On the concept of a historical topic” (1938-1949): “topos is something anonymous <…> It <…> is inherent in temporal and spatial omnipresence… In this impersonal stylistic element, we touch on a layer of historical life that lies deeper than the level of individual invention” 2 .

The spatial metaphor of the “stratum” – hidden, lying below the visible verbal reality – is significant: Curtius imagines that he descends into that depth of literature, where European literature reveals its unity. At the same time, this is the level of, so to speak, “small values”, literary microparticles – it is not for nothing that Curtius calls his method “the technique of philological microscopy” 3 .

So Curtius’s topos is a cliché or scheme of thought and expression. The definition of topos connects thought and expression: it means that the topos is assumed to have some meaningful constant, but also remains stable at the level of expression, even in translation, when moving from one literature to another. In the already post-Curtiusian German tradition, it is customary to associate the topos not only with a certain meaning, but also with a specific verbal embodiment: in it, in all its transitions and transformations, a certain key word, Stichwort, must be preserved.

The concept of topos – also known as top, common place, locus communis – was borrowed by Curtius from rhetoric. In this borrowing, Curtius makes a very significant terminological substitution, to which I would like to draw attention.

Topoi, “places” in rhetoric are, in fact, a heuristic category, a tool for finding arguments. But what are these “places”? Of course, the word “place” must be understood in a figurative sense. When Quintilian speaks of the rhetorical locus as “the place where arguments lie” (sedes argumentorum) 4 , he means “mental” place – some general category or train of thought that helped to generate or find arguments. The speaker must know the places where the arguments lie, just as the hunter must know where this or that game is caught (Quintilian’s comparison). The set of topoi was varied: they could be both general concepts (place, time, person) and the names of mental procedures (establishing similarities, opposites, comparisons).

Topoi can be compared to folders where we store computer files. However, “folders”-topoi contain not files, but arguments. If a speaker defends a woman who is accused of robbery, he can look for arguments in a place (“folder”) called “a natura hominum”, that is, “from human nature”, and in this folder there is a subfolder where arguments related to with the difference between the sexes (locus a sexu). There, according to Quintilian, he will find the following argument: “robbery is more common to commit a man, and poisoning is more common to a woman” 5 . This is, in the rhetorical sense, the specific argument found, and, as we see, it is very similar to what Curtius considers a topos.

So, topos in rhetoric is a general category that allows one to find specific arguments; the literary topos, the topos according to Curtius – is a concrete argument, or rather, verbal formulas that have arisen from rhetorical arguments. Now we see what a substitution of the concept Curtius made: he transferred the name of the topos from the general place where they are looking for, to the specific one that is found there. Let us illustrate this substitution with a simple example. The statement “all men are mortal” according to Curtius is a topos; and for the ancient orator, this is an argument found in the common place “from the nature of man.”

The correct rhetorical meaning of the term “topos” Curtius, of course, perfectly knew. Why did he make this change? I think that he was very satisfied with the non-rhetorical understanding of the common place, already established in European cultures, in the sense of a common place – a kind of commonplace banality, a cliché, a ready-made formula. At the same time, Curtius, calling the argument a topos, is clearly trying to get away from rhetoric as soon as possible: after all, the term “argument” is much more strongly and unambiguously reminiscent of the basic process of argumentation for rhetoric than the term “topos”. And the desire to get away from rhetoric is understandable: rhetoric for Curtius is nothing more than a kind of reservoir from which literature draws; but it is precisely there that literature becomes itself for him, where rhetoric ceases. In essence, Curtius is not interested in rhetoric as such, and least of all he is interested in the section of argument from which he borrowed the concept of topos. An index of terms to his book shows that the term argumentatio appears only once in it.

This is the paradox of the whole theory of Curtius: borrowing his key concept from rhetoric, he cuts off all its connections with this science, in fact discards rhetoric as such, including the category of argumentation to which the topos is subordinated. Let us illustrate this paradox with an analogy: imagine a hypothetical literary critic who has created a certain doctrine of motives as elements of action, but ignores the concept of plot. Such a picture is almost absurd, since it is clear that the motif cannot be defined outside of its correlation with the “superior” concept – the plot.

Meanwhile, something very similar happened to the topos in the concept of Curtius. Even if we accept his terminology and understand the topos as Curtius understands it—as the sought-for argument, and not as the place where arguments are sought—we will still be forced to state that the topos is artificially separated from the system in which it is actually , and acquires its essence – from the system of argumentation. I repeat: this is the same as absolutizing the concept of motive, completely discarding the concept of plot. Namely, this is how Curtius treated the topos.

The topos receives its essence only as an element in the system of rhetorical persuasion. Outside this system, it immediately becomes something extremely indefinite. Although the term, no doubt, has entered the widest circulation, many researchers complain about the vagueness of the definition given by Curtius. Accordingly, the boundaries of the concept of topos in modern works appear more than vague: it is either a stable image, or a verbal formula, or a motive with which the topos approaches, according to the fair remark of S. Neklyudov, “up to complete non-delimitation” ## Neklyudov S. Yu. Motive and text // Language of culture: semantics and grammar.

Topeka, USA – travel on the map

Topeka is a city in the central part of the United States, the capital of the state of Kansas and Shawnee County.

    History

    19th century

In the 1840s, settler wagons set off west from Independence, Missouri, beginning their 3,000-kilometer journey along the difficult and dangerous road that would later become known as the Oregon Way. About 100 kilometers west of the Missouri crossing near Kansas City, three French Canadian brothers named Papan married three sisters from the local Kansa Indian tribe. The wives persuaded the brothers not to move further west, but to stay here. Seeing numerous settlers crossing the Kansas River with great difficulty, the brothers decided to organize a ferry crossing and earn a living from this. In the 1840s and 1850s, the crossing was the only sign of civilization in the area. The Papan brothers named it Topeka, which in their wives’ native language meant “a place where they dig good potatoes” (the Indians called this area even before the arrival of the whites).

In the early 1850s, traffic along the Oregon Way was supplemented by commerce along the new military road from Fort Leavenworth through Topeka to Fort Riley. In 1854, the heads of nine families who by that time lived near the crossing announced the formation of the city of Topeka at the first city meeting. Soon steamboats began mooring at the new city’s wharf, delivering meat, lumber, flour, and manufactured goods, and exporting potatoes, corn, and wheat east. By the end of the 1860s, Topeka had become the economic center of the surrounding area, providing the townspeople with almost all the amenities available in those years.

    Topeka, 1869

After a decade of bitter conflict between supporters and opponents of slavery, Kansas was admitted to the United States in 1861 as the 34th state. Topeka was chosen as the capital by Dr. Charles Robinson, the state’s first governor. In 1862, Cyrus K. Holiday donated a piece of land within the city for the construction of the Capitol. Construction of the Kansas State Capitol began in 1866 and took 37 years to complete. The east wing was built first, then the west, and finally the central building. In the fall of 1864, a wooden fort, later named Fort Simple, was built at 6th Street and Kansas Avenue to protect Topeka from Confederate forces from Missouri. The offensive never took place, the fort was abandoned in April 1865 and demolished in April 1867.

Despite the fact that the drought of 1860 and the period of the Civil War slowed the growth of the city and the state as a whole, Topeka quickly restored the pre-war growth rate, which slowed down again only in 1870. In the 1870s, many former slaves settled on the east side of Lincoln Street between Munson Avenue and Twelfth Street. The area became known as “Tennessee” because many of them were from that state. The first African American kindergarten west of the Mississippi was established there in 1893.

Lincoln College, now Washburn University, was established in 1865 in Topeka as a joint act of the government of Kansas and the General Association of Rectors and Churches of Kansas. In 1869, the railroad began moving west from Topeka, and in 1878, the headquarters of the ATSF railroad company moved to the city.

In the late 1880s, Topeka went through a boom period that ended in economic collapse. In 1889 the bubble of speculative prices for land and real estate burst, and many investors were completely ruined. Topeka, however, doubled its population during this period and weathered the American depression with relative ease.0-s.

    20th century

Site of the first black kindergarten west of the Mississippi River, Topeka is also the home of Linda Brown, the plaintiff in the famous Brown v. ” (teaching black and white children) and racial mixing in American public schools. It is curious that although in 1960 Topeka was 91.8% white and only 7.7% African American, the city became one of the main arenas in the United States for the struggle of the black population to eliminate segregation. The arrival of black children in formerly “white” public schools led to a significant exodus of white students to private schools.

Brown v. Board of Education was the most famous event in Topeka’s history, establishing a reputation as a liberal, anti-racist city. However, new, more radical black “anti-racism” groups, such as the Task Force to Overcome Racism in Topeka, have gradually emerged in the city and are getting mixed reviews.

    1966 tornado

June 8 1966 Topeka was hit by an F5 tornado on the Fujita scale. Starting in the southwestern outskirts of the city and moving to the northeast, the whirlwind passed over the local landmark, Burnet Mound. According to an old Indian legend, this mound is able to protect the city from tornadoes if left undisturbed. A few years before the tornado hit, a water tower was built on the mound. According to local natives, this was the cause of the misfortune. The total cost of damage from the impact of the elements exceeded $ 100 million in prices of 1966 years old, making it one of the costliest tornadoes in US history. However, the city quickly recovered from what had happened.

In 1974, Forbes Air Force Base was closed, and more than 10,000 people who worked there left Topeka, which affected the city’s economy for many years after the base was closed. In the 1980s, citizens voted to build a new airport, a convention center, and change the structure of city government. In the early 1990s, Topeka began a period of sustained economic growth. New buildings are being built, roads are being expanded, and a large-scale program is underway to improve the city. Since significant financial resources were required for such a significant construction, decisions were made several times in city referendums to increase taxes, incl. sales tax.

    21st century

In 2000, the townspeople again voted to extend the sales tax to improve infrastructure in Topeka and Shawnee County. In August 2004, after another vote, the tax was 12.5%. Each year, sales tax funds provide $5 million for local business development and job creation, and $9 million for roads and bridges. It is planned to continue the redevelopment of areas located along the Kansas River, which runs through Topeka from west to east. New residential complexes are being built along the banks of the river in the city center, the facades of old buildings are being repaired, and places for public recreation are being arranged. The city’s railroad station, considered one of the finest facilities of its kind in the Midwest, has been refurbished. The Capitol is undergoing an 8-year, $283 million renovation. At the same time, the city’s tax policy is criticized by a significant part of the business community, who argue that the high level of taxation hinders the economic development of Topeka. Topeka is also the home of Westboro Baptist Church, a prominent Protestant congregation that is known for its protests throughout the

USA and the struggle against the GLBT community.

    Geography and climate

Topeka is located in northeastern Kansas at the intersection of Interstate I-70 and US 75. The total area is 148 km², of which 2.6 km² (or 1.70%) is water.

The city is located on the northern border of the subtropical oceanic climate zone, far from the moderating influence of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. As a result, summers in Topeka are hot and moderately rainy, while winters are cool and dry. Winds from the northern part of the Great Prairies can cause very high (summer) or very low (winter) temperatures. The interaction of warm and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico with the dry and cold winds of the Great Prairies often causes thunderstorms and tornadoes.
