A sleepover is a totally classic idea, and it can be easily adapted to kids at all age. Just pick age-appropriate activities to spark their imagination and fun. Think glow-in-the-dark props, at-home spa experiences or makeovers, and cooking challenges.

Host a Backyard Movie Night

All you need is a movie projector and a big wall. Ply the kids with individual popcorn buckets and candies, and enjoy one of the best kids’ movies right under the stars. Bonus: If you have a pool, make it a “dive-in” movie night, with kids watching from the water.

This kids’ birthday party idea requires an extra nod to safety and prep. Make sure everyone dresses comfortably in layers for the weather, that there are enough adults to supervise young children, and that someone is on hand with the skills and attention to build and monitor the fire. Once you’re set, go around and have everyone share their favorite ghost story.

Do a DIY Pizza Party

Make your bash an at-home build-your-own-pizza night. Let each attendee roll out their own individual-size pizza dough, or keep things even easier with ready-made shells. Then set out bowls of pre-prepped ingredients — veggies, proteins, cheeses, with something for everyone’s taste and dietary restriction — and let them create their own masterpiece. The fun (and the photo opps) are in the process! If you prefer, try a similar party format, swapping the savory for sweets like cookies or ice cream.

Divide your crew into groups and send them on a scavenger hunt using whatever parameters make sense for the weather and age group — indoors or outdoors works just fine, either at home, someplace outdoors like a park, or even a commercial location like a mall.

Set the scavenger hunt goals — such as one item for each letter of the alphabet, or items that can be found in nature — and let the groups tackle the challenge. Keep things clean and streamlined by requiring them not to retrieve the actual items but to snap photos on a smartphone for proof if each group has one accessible. Have prizes for the winners (and consolation prizes, too!).

Get Them in the Game

Plan a birthday party around a game at a local facility, and keep your group active and engaged in friendly competition. Hit the mini golf course for some outdoor fun. Or keep it indoors with a party at a skating rink, rock climbing gym or bowling alley.

Arrange a Spa Day

Pamper your birthday crew with a spa day. Try it right at home, inviting guests to come in their robes, and setting up stations for nails, hair, and skincare. Goodie bags might include lip balms and face masks. Or, take a small group for the pro experience by booking chairs in advance at a local nail salon.

Messy Art-Creating Party

Encourage and inspire your group’s creativity by giving them all the tools they need to make art — and embrace the mess for a fun and memorable event. This works best outside when weather permits, but it’s possible in a very well-protected indoor environment lined with plastic or drop cloths, too. Let the group participate in a large-scale project together by painting a mural, handprints, or splatter paint project on a bedsheet. (It can become a cherished memory when hung later on the celebrant’s wall.) Give everyone smaller canvasses to take home as their own special memory.

Depending on the season, your birthday celebrant may love experiencing a day out at a ball game surrounded by all their favorite people in an environment filled with electric energy. Treat a small crew (or a larger one, if budget permits) to peanuts and popcorn, and give each kid a ball or team souvenir to take home as a favor. Inquire about getting your guest of honor’s name and birthday message on the marquee for an exciting mid-game moment when they see their name in lights.

Set Up a Science Lab

Encourage kids’ love of STEM — and show them just how fun it really is when applied to real-world situations — with a birthday party filled with easy, fun, and creative science experiments. Center the activities around making their own texture-filled slime or colorful bath bombs, which they can take home as favors.

Whether your kid loves vintage race cars or wants to wear a gown and crown on the special day, there’s a themed party idea for every birthday boy and girl.

Ysolt Usigan

Planning a birthday party for your kid? With so many different themes and interests, it’s easy to get lost in all the Pinterest clutter. Whether your child love mermaids and unicorns or is super into Sesame Street and Pokemon, picking the right kids’ birthday party theme is one of the most important things you can do to give your little one the best time ever. Before you throw yourself into the wrong theme, narrow down your kid’s birthday party ideas by simply asking them: “What type of party would you want to have?” Or, if you’re dealing with a toddler: “What’s your favorite character from a show?” or “What’s your favorite movie or show?”

Once you pick a theme based on your little one’s current interests, start building your party plan:

• Where is the party going to be? Your house, at an outdoor public place like a park, an indoor play space you have to rent out?

• Set a date and make invitations. Everyone loves Etsy for invitations these days. There are many vendors and artists who offer custom digital prints that you can pay design fees for under $10. Then, you can just go to your local printer or Staples, or print yourself at home.

• Next, plot and conquer DIY birthday decor or source from Amazon or Etsy.

No matter what you decide, don’t forget the most important thing: that you celebrate your child and invite their favorite friends.

10 cool ideas for celebrating a child’s birthday

Leisure ideas /
Holidays and gifts

I remember when I was a child my mom and dad set two tables, one for adults and the other for kids. After a hearty meal, the hero of the occasion, that is, me, and my guests were left to their own devices, there was no talk of any entertainment programs. Of course, we found something to do – we ran, jumped, played with freshly presented toys. Meanwhile, the adults continued to sit and drink, and did not pay too much attention to the younger generation.

I am immensely grateful to my parents, they did their best, and this, considering that the hard 90s were in the yard. Today, however, there are incomparably more opportunities. Denying a child an unforgettable event is at least blasphemous. In the countries of developed capitalism, thematic children’s holidays have long become the norm, but in the post-Soviet territory it is still customary to celebrate “in the family circle with compote and cake.

Dear parents, this is unfair and not interesting! Let’s arrange a real party for your child, turn his life into a fairy tale for one day, because who, if not mommy and daddy, are the main wizards for the baby. I bring to your attention 10 ideas for an amazing birthday.

1. Pirates

Pirate costumes are nowhere to be found. Hats, sabers, bandanas are sold in any market. Buying props and equipment will cost relatively little, and cotton vests cost mere pennies. Do not worry about the quality of the scenery, the kids will get excited about the idea of reincarnation, they will not care that the paraphernalia is made of plastic, and the ship is an apartment in a panel high-rise building.

It is important to design invitations in the appropriate style, guests must understand the dress code and strictly follow the script by choosing the appropriate behavior. Think over the interior design in advance. Hang black flags around the room, get a few skeins of thick rope rope and imitate tight ropes. If desired, build a labyrinth representing the holds from plywood.

2. Disney Princesses

Girls are the cutest and prettiest creatures on the planet, angels descended from heaven. They need to instill self-respect from childhood, learn to be princesses. Otherwise, they will grow into notorious women. A Disney themed party is a great way to prove to a young lady that she is magical and unique.

Decorate the house with balloons, cover the tables with tablecloths and the walls with draperies. It is better to choose gentle colors that blend well with each other – white, pink, blue, purple. I guarantee that every bridesmaid invited will have a beautiful dress with ribbons and frills, so that their parents will not be knocked off their feet in search of costumes. Buy a diadem with rhinestones, and the evening will be given a fabulous style, but here are a couple of ideas for a beautiful hairstyle.

3. Peppa Pig

Does your child have a fever called Peppa Pig? What is stopping you from turning your childhood fantasies into reality and introducing him a little closer to your favorite character. The cartoon is drawn so primitively that even a person far from creativity is able to build papier-mâché masks. Take a large balloon, stock up on old newspapers, PVA glue and gouache. Make Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig heads for yourself and your husband, and the kids will be quite happy with fake heels and hoop ears.

The assortment of themed merch impresses with its volume and variety. Buy bright plates, cups with a pink pig. Order a cake decorated with marzipan figurines. Give the little one a plush growth toy, it will become his best friend for many years. The kid will hug her at night, remembering the most colorful and fun birthday.

4. Dora the Traveler

Throwing a party in the style of “Dasha the Traveler”, your friendly family will have to comprehend the secrets of cosplay (reproduction of popular fictional characters in real life). Prepare a scenario stuffed with riddles and puzzles. Mom will play the role of the main character, and dad will play her faithful friend – the monkey Slipper or the cunning fox Rogue. Involve invited parents in the game, give out replicas to each.

The kids will go looking for lost items with interest, jump or dance for clues and learn a few words in English (they will be the password that opens the chests with the treasure). The birthday quest will appeal to both kids and adults, and the main prize will be a delicious cake and bags of sweets for all participants.

5. Monster High

Girls love the animated series about the school of monsters, in which all students are unique, and their external differences are not perceived by others with hostility. Watch a few episodes with your daughter, ask which character she likes best. So you decide on the color scheme for decorating the room and costume for your baby. For example, Draculaura dresses in black and pink, Frankie prefers a blue and purple check, and Cleo, as befits the daughter of a pharaoh, is greedy for gold and precious stones.

Organizers of the “Monster High” party I recommend to focus on make-up. A couple of boxes of make-up, bright hair crayons will turn girls into fashion dolls, and accessories will complete the look. You can invite them to bake and decorate their own coffin-shaped cupcakes, draw a picture of their favorite heroine and her boyfriend, or sing the Monster High anthem in karaoke.

6. Chapiteau

When a nomadic circus arrives in the city, crowds eager for entertainment begin to flock from all over the area. Children admire the mighty strong men, fearless tightrope walkers and trained animals with delight. Let an elephant not fit in the apartment, but it is quite possible to invite a clown with dogs and pigeons. Learn a couple of magic tricks with the Young Magician set and a YouTube video. Delight your child with disappearing balloons, endless ribbons of handkerchiefs tied together and coins hiding behind the ears.

Instead of boring competitions, ask guests to prepare numbers in invitation cards. Hang a poster drawn with your child on the front door. The decor must be pretentious – white and red, gold tinsel, sparkles. Choose treats to match the theme – stars, balls, funny little animals. Arrange a special place under the photo with cardboard decorations and paper hats, mustaches, lips on sticks.

7. Little Mafia

The theme of the party does not necessarily include the well-known deductive game, although, if desired, and the appropriate age of the hero of the occasion, you can spend another hour calculating the criminal contingent among those invited. Gangster images are suitable for both kids and teenagers. Just imagine five-year-old boys in striped three-piece suits with painted mustaches and girls in sparkly dresses with feathers in their hair.

I repeat, the entertainment program should be selected, focusing on the target audience. Kids will love to “rob banks” through an obstacle course in the form of stretched strings of “signaling laser beams”, crawl through “ventilation shafts” made of chairs, and shoot members of a rival syndicate with pneumatic guns with soft Velcro cartridges. Teenagers are more pretentious in terms of their choice of entertainment. In this case, I propose not to separate companies by age at all, but to play themed board games together.

8. Scooby-Doo

The popularity of the huge talking dog does not even think to slow down. When I was a child, I used to solve mysteries with Shaggy and Scooby, and today my classmates’ kids are happy to do the same. Absolutely all the trips of the team of young detectives are incredibly full of adventure. Your imagination will be where to turn around. For example, arrange a haunted house out of your apartment or take a trip around the world in which each room of the house will symbolize a continent.

Solve riddles with the kids, put together puzzles and make puzzles. Prepare bags of dog biscuits, Scooby’s favorite treat, and rent costumes. Personally, I think that on a birthday, all the attention of parents should be riveted to their child. Animators, of course, do a better job with the entertainment program, experience affects, but we already devote too little time to our precious children.

9. Wild West

Are you a big fan of Clint Eastwood movies? Are you fascinated by the romance of endless prairies and firefights in saloons? Do you want to raise a real man from your son (the main thing here is not to remember the “Brokeback Mountain”)? Then God himself ordered to organize a party in the style of the “Wild West”.

Costumes are not particularly extravagant – jeans, plaid shirts, hats, sheriff’s badges, a pair of pistols. The decorations of the playground are quite simple – straw bales (you can buy at the pet store), a cardboard fire in the middle, a few barrels that act as chairs. If you want to make a cowboy bar, find a small table, put together a simple drink rack and hinged plywood doors. Don’t forget the horses (cardboard heads on sticks), it will be fun to have a race or play train robbery.

10. Neko Party

Neko is Japanese for cat. Decorate the room with huge balls. It is not necessary to buy kilometers of yarn, it is enough to wrap round balloons with threads soaked in PVA glue, let it dry and gently blow off the base. As a result, you will get beautiful scenery at no extra cost. Hang the balls from the ceiling. Cut out from whatman paper and color the paws of different sizes. Stick with double-sided tape throughout the room.

Dress up the little ones in kitty costumes and invite a photographer. Distribute ears and tails to parents, paint faces with mustaches. General shots will come out cute and purring. Competitions do not require global capital investments. For example, print out famous cartoon and fairy-tale cats on a printer and invite the kids to guess their names. Another option is to hide toy mice in the apartment and arrange a “hunt”.

Dear parents, your children deserve the best. Give your kids joy, make them happy, and you will become an example for them to follow. Happy celebration to you!
