Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky.

Louisville – the main loading center for the Ohio River during the western expansion, a working-class city, punk rock bars and just a fun place to spend a day or two visiting museums, wandering the old neighborhoods, drinking bourbon.

The world-famous horse race, which was attended by the Queen of Great Britain, is held here. Boxer Muhammad Ali, actress Jennifer Lawrence were born and raised in the city, inventor Thomas Edison, actor Tom Cruise and singer Nicole Scherzinger lived in Louisville for a long time.

Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky. It stands on the banks of the Ohio River, along which the border between the states of Kentucky and Indiana runs. In recent years, the city has grown so much that the districts located on the other side of the river in Indiana fell into its agglomeration, for which the Louisville agglomeration received the playful name of Kentuckiana.

The city was founded in 1778 by General George Clark and named after the then King of France, Louis XVI, in gratitude for the assistance provided by France in the war for the independence of the United States. A monument to the founder of the city stands in Louisville on the Ohio River embankment.

The business center in the city is quite small – only a few skyscrapers, almost all of them belong to banks and insurance companies.

The tallest of them is a skyscraper at 400 West Market. In 2005, the building belonged to the insurance company Aegon and was called Aegon Center. The height of the 35-story skyscraper is 167 meters, which makes it the tallest in the state of Kentucky. The building is easily recognizable thanks to the 24-meter dome, made in the Romanesque style and reminiscent of a strainer.

What else is the northernmost city of the American South famous for?

Louisville is the center of three native American symbols: bourbon, baseball bat and chewing gum.

This city is famous for its numerous distilleries that produce the most popular type of whiskey in America – bourbon. This is one of the unofficial symbols of the United States.

The first drink bourbon appeared in Kentucky, when immigrants from Scotland and Ireland came here in the late 18th century, familiar with the technology of making ordinary whiskey.

The first to age whiskey in a charred barrel, which gave the drink a reddish tint and original taste, was the Baptist preacher Elijah Craig of Kentucky.

The main difference between bourbon and Scotch, Irish or other whiskey is that bourbon is made from corn, not barley, and is aged in oak barrels before use, which are always charred on the inside.

Chewing gum was invented in 1873 by Louisville native John Cogan.

The Louisville Slugger baseball bat factory is located in the same city.

You don’t have to be a baseball fan, but it’s still hard not to stop by the world’s biggest bat and stop by the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory.

The sculpture was installed in 1884 – since the opening of the baseball bat factory by Hillerich & Bradsby Co.

There are several manufacturers of baseball bats, but the Louisville Slugger brand is the official name of the American Major League Baseball. Over 60% of players use Louisville Slugger bats.

The founder of the plant – Frederick Hillerich (Frederick Hillerich) emigrated with his family from Germany to America in 1842. In 1856 he opened a woodworking shop in Louisville.

His son – Bud (Bud Hillerich), an avid baseball fan in 1880 began to work in his father’s workshop. According to legend, the first professional bat was made by Bud for Pete Browning, the star of the Louisville professional team, nicknamed “The Louisville Slugger” in 1884. The bat turned out to be of excellent quality, Pete really liked it, and then the production of baseball bats was launched in the workshop.

Any bit produced by the factory can be bought here in the factory shop.
