Lake Zurich 🦉🇨🇭 Switzerland Business

Lake Zurich (Swiss German: Zürisee , High German: Zürichsee ) is considered one of the main bodies of water in German-speaking Switzerland. As in the case of the city of the same name, wealth emanates from the lake. The unique nature, combined with a high standard of living, turn it into a real paradise. It’s time to get to know each other better! (Portal “Switzerland Business”)

Contents

Geography and climate

Lake Zurich is located in the eastern part of Switzerland on the territory of 3 cantons (and not just one, as is often, unfortunately, can be read in many Russian-language resources on the Internet) – Zurich, St. Gallen and Schwitz.

The reservoir is surrounded by the Albis, Zimmerberg and Pfannenstiel hills, which partially protect it from cold winds, providing a temperate climate.

Winter on the lake. Photo: swiss-image.ch/Ivo Scholz

The total area of the lake is 88.66 square kilometers, and its coastline stretches for 87. 6 kilometers. The depth reaches a maximum of 136 meters. It is inferior to Lake Geneva and Lake Constance in size, but not in beauty.

When asked what the name of the lake in Zurich is, we already know the answer. However, only a few are aware that the reservoir is conditionally divided into 2 parts:

  • Upper Lake (known in German as Obersee ) and
  • Lower Lake (aka Untersee ).

The last of the mentioned parts is located on the territory of the canton of Zurich. Accordingly, the first part was divided between St. Gallen and Schwyz.

It is curious that, like its closest (in the territorial sense) “brother” – Lake Walensee – Lake Zurich also has an elongated shape resembling a moon or sickle. The western part of the reservoir smoothly flows into the Limmat River, and the Lint River flows into the eastern part.

Lake Zurich through history

  • The settlements of the first inhabitants of the shores of Lake Zurich date back to the Neolithic era. This is evidenced by the found remains of pile dwellings.
  • The first mention of Lake Zurich dates back to the 8th century. In the work “ Vita Sancti Galli ” the reservoir is named “ lacus de Turegum “.
  • For the first time, Lake Zurich was depicted on the map of Konrad Türsts ( Konrad Türsts ), dated 1495-1497. By the way, he was the author of the first map of Switzerland.
  • With the care of the Austrian Duke Rudolf IV between the coastal cities of Rapperswil-Jona and Hurden in 1358-1360. a wooden bridge was built. He served for a long time – until 1878. In 2001, the local authorities decided to reconstruct it while maintaining its authentic look. Today it is considered to be the longest wooden bridge in Switzerland.
  • Lake Zurich has for many years been part of the Rhineland-Basel-Graubünden-Italy transport route for textiles, salt, wine and metal.
  • In 1336, the People’s Association of Navigators was founded in Zurich, which was facilitated by the huge port significance of the reservoir.
  • For many centuries, Lake Zurich served as a haven for the national navy.
  • On June 19, 1835, the first paddle steamer Minerva set sail on Lake Zurich.
  • Lake Zurich is repeatedly mentioned in the works of famous classics. Among them are the German poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the poet Friedrich Klopstock, the Swiss writer Gottfried Keller, the short story writer Konrad Meyer and the painter Johann Hofmann.

Navigation

Modern navigation on Lake Zurich plays not only a transport but also a tourist role. Every day, hundreds of tourists board the sightseeing boats to enjoy the breathtaking scenery to their heart’s content.

At the moment there are 3 types of tours: small (1.5 hours), large (4 hours) and on the Upper Lake (7 hours). Travelers have a chance to visit the coastal cities of Zollikon, Rapperswil-Jona, Pfeffikon, Horgen, Zurich and others.

However, if you are looking for something unusual, we advise you to take a cruise on special old paddle steamers. Stunning views of local nature and a reservoir, combined with delicious Swiss cuisine and wine, will leave only the most pleasant memories for each passenger. By the way, left-wing politicians in Zurich have been striving to ban paddle steamers for years. The sound of their horn seems too loud for politicians.

All transportation on Lake Zurich is carried out by the Swiss shipping company Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft, founded in 1890-1891.

Activities and events

Oktoberfest

For several years now, Pfeffikon has been celebrating its own Oktoberfest. The highlight of the beer festival is the location: all the tents are located on the shores of Lake Zurich, offering a picturesque view of the local landscapes.

Coastal cities

Zurich

  • More about the city: Zurich .

“Gold Coast”

“Gold Coast” is a chain of coastal towns Zollikon, Küsnacht, Erlenbach, Herliberg, Meilen, Itikon am See, Mennedorf and Stef, located on the right bank of Lake Zurich. The region has gained particular fame among the wealthy of this world for its low tax rate and expensive real estate. Add to all this a warm climate and picturesque nature. Well, why not a piece of paradise?

Rapperswil-Jona

The city of Rapperswil-Jona literally has its own special smell – roses grow here at every turn (more than 600 varieties!). To enjoy their beauty, just walk along the local streets or go to one of the three city gardens.

Fans of antiquities are advised to go to the Old Town: it is closed to cars, which allows you to safely enjoy the picturesque churches and monasteries.

The highlight of the city is Rapperswil Castle (XIII century). By the way, don’t forget to enjoy the stunning view of Lake Zurich and the Glarn Alps.

Pfäffikon (SZ)

  • Details of the town: Pfäffikon (SZ).

The problem of mass development of the coast

The economic success of Switzerland brought prosperity and prestige to the country and its inhabitants. However, these phenomena had a downside: for many decades, the shores around the reservoir have become a kind of “brick jungle”. After the cottage development boom, there are currently few coastal areas left untouched.

Islands on the lake

Not everyone is aware that 3 islands of natural origin rise above the water surface of the reservoir:

  • Ufenau Island
  • Lützelau Island
  • Schönenwerd Island

How to get there?

For foreign visitors arriving in Switzerland, the choice of route is obvious – via Zurich International Airport.

Other Swiss lakes

  • Detail: Swiss lakes .

Tourists should visit not only Lake Zurich, but also other reservoirs of the Confederation that are in no way inferior to it. Let’s go on a tour of them …
