It is customary to light candles on the feast of the Meeting of the Lord. This is an ancient rite, which in the Orthodox tradition is performed as a sign of the purification of the world by the Light of the Gospel of Christ.

The tradition comes from the ancient custom to organize a procession on the day of the Meeting, like a procession, with lit lamps.

Dear fathers, brothers and sisters! Congratulations to all of you on the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord!

This marvelous temple has survived to this day, despite the years of devastation and hard times, and was restored with great love. Even today, entering this holy place, it is as if you find yourself in the 90s, when our possibilities were modest, but everything was covered with an ardent desire to revive the shrine.

Today, during the service, we heard passages from the Holy Scripture, from which it follows: the apostles were waiting for the ascended Jesus to come to earth again (Acts 1:1-12, Luke 24:36-53). The disciples lived in anticipation of the Second Coming, believed that it would happen soon, that bad people would be punished, and good people would be comforted.

A lot of time has passed since then. People who lived in different ages believed that the Second Coming would happen during their lifetime. But the Lord prolongs the time given to this world. Why does He give this time? For us to repent. If each of us appears before God as he is now, then all our abomination will be revealed to the eyes of God. The Lord, of course, is still looking at us, sending us signs, including frightening ones, so that we can repent, turn away from sin and enter eternal life. After all, next to God there can be nothing dirty and evil.

You and I are called to get rid of infirmities. Events are taking place around us today, in which we should see Providence, and in some ways also the wrath of God. You and I live under a peaceful sky, we can safely go to work and church, speak our native languages, and confess our faith. This is the great grace of God. Our parents and grandparents were different, and they grieved then. And now we grieve, because nothing is pleasing to a person in life. How much the Lord gives bounty, and the person still grumbles. Discontent has settled in us like a cancerous tumor, and this corrodes the soul, prevents us from glorifying God, Who is ascending to heaven today.

Today’s holiday obliges us to be closer to each other and more tolerant. It is important to give praise to God for the fact that He is patient with us and to pray for those who are in terrible life circumstances. We must pray purely for our soldiers who shed their blood, pray for our Motherland. Our Fatherland has gone through a lot, but the Russian people have always found the strength to rise and be reborn. Strength was drawn not from wealth, but from spirit. The strength of the spirit helped our ancestors build majestic temples, create wonderful works of art, cultivate the land, and enjoy life.

People of previous generations had no less sorrows than we do today, but they knew how to enjoy life. Unfortunately, we are losing this ability. True joy can only be with God when the soul is pure. It is very important to follow the example of our ancestors, who created beauty, including this temple. Today marks the 150th anniversary of its foundation, and all this time prayers have been offered here.

I wish all of you and I to turn our spiritual gaze to the Mount of Olives, look at the Son of God ascending into heaven and pray that the Lord, as before, would have mercy on our land, people and the whole world. God grant that we use the time given to us for repentance, so that we are freed from everything sinful and become followers of the teachings of Christ and His holy commandments. The apostles on this day stood with their feet on the ground, and with their eyes they saw the holy Ascension. But after all, church life takes place in a certain Divine dimension, and today the Lord called us together with the apostles to the Mount of Olives, from which He ascends to heaven. Let us carefully keep the memory of this in our hearts and wait for the descent of the Holy Spirit.
