Aspen/Snowmass – Ski Resorts (USA)

Aspen is one of the largest resorts in the US. It has a reputation as a prestigious and expensive resort. This is partly true, but Aspen is accessible to those on a tight budget, and snow is almost always guaranteed here. Aspen combines four isolated ski areas – Aspen Mountain (Aspen Mountain), Aspen Highlands (Aspen Highlands), Buttermilk (Buttermilk) and Snowmass (Snowmass). All together they offer 200 km of slopes for all tastes, both for beginners and experienced skiers, with a developed lift system.

The highest peaks in the area are Maroon Bells (4247 m) and Pyramid Peak (4205 m). Aspen is a Victorian-style resort town nestled in the picturesque Roaring Fork Valley, with a plethora of restaurants, shops and plenty of activities besides skiing.

Skiing season:

  • Snowmass and Aspen Mountain – from late November to mid-April;
  • Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk – from mid-December to early April.

Slopes, slopes, lifts

  • 4 ski areas have a single ski pass. A free bus service connects all ski areas.

Five restaurants and cafes on Mount: The Sundeck, The Aspen Mountain Club, Bonnie’s, Montagna Restaurant & Bar and Ajax Tavern

Aspen Mountain is Aspen , the Silver Queen gondola bottom station is located right in the city center. Mount Ajax rises above the city. There are many rather difficult tracks here, but there are also well-prepared tracks for intermediate skiers.

Beginners: Aspen Mountain may be the only ski area in America that doesn’t have green runs.

Intermediate skiers: Intermediate skiing areas are around the summit and in the gorges between the ridges. You can take a gondola to the top and ride in a wide clearing along the slopes served by the Ajax Express and Gentlemen’s Ridge lifts.
If these trails seem difficult, you can go down on the gondola.
You can also go down the slopes of the Copper Bowl or Spar Gulch. Both tracks merge into one – Little Nell, which leads to the city, and therefore by the end of the day it is crowded and broken.

For experienced skiers – slopes leading from the top to the gorges. The black slopes are really difficult here. For those who like to ride over bumps and among trees, the Bell Mountain track under the gondola is suitable. Walsh’s is a real virgin paradise.
The black slopes of Upper Little Percy and Red’s Run are a bit easier.
Guided Mountain Powder tours to the other side of Aspen Mountain are a good choice for experienced skiers.

Aspen Snowmass

Snowmass is located 12 miles from Aspen. This is the largest skiing region in which there are slopes for any level of training, but mainly for intermediate skiers.

Highest point – 3,813 m

Lower station – 2,470 m

11 restaurants and cafes on the mountain: Burlingame Cabin, Café Suzanne, Cirque Bar & Grill, Gwyn’s High Alpine, Krabloonik, Lynn Britt Cabin, Sam’s Knob, Two Creeks Mexican Café, Ullrhof, Up 4 Pizza

For beginners there is a wide ski area that runs parallel to the town. The Fanny Hill and Wood Run lifts lead to it. The long, gentle Funnel track will give beginners the opportunity to feel like conquerors of snowy expanses.

Beginners looking to get higher in the mountains can climb Sam’s Knob for great views and descend the Max Park, Lunchline and Dawdler trails to Fanny Hill.
The next step is Elk Camp. The tracks there, although marked in blue, are quite simple.
Beginner trails have only one drawback in Snowmass. Many places of accommodation from which you can immediately go to the slopes and lifts are located along the green trails. Therefore, in the morning or towards the end of the day, they are often used by experienced skiers and snowboarders rushing either to the lifts or home, which can interfere with beginners.

Sam’s Knob, Elk Camp and Two Creeks ski areas have a variety of runs for intermediate skiers. The Big Burn Ski Area has a mile wide and 1.5 mile long run. This side of the mountain was set on fire by the Indians in 1880, and the trees no longer grew large. You just have to be careful in poor visibility.

The slopes are steeper on the High Alpine. You can ski to Cirque, from where there is a not very difficult descent to Big Burn.

Experienced skiers will enjoy skiing through the trees on the Hanging Valley Glades or the open bowl on the Hanging Valley Wall. Both routes are very difficult. Three consecutive lifts – Wood Run, Alpine Springs and High Alpine will take you to this ski area.

The second difficult section is Cirque – a large open bowl between the Sheer Bliss High Alpine lifts. This area is served by a drag lift. Interesting difficult tracks – Rocky Mountain High, Hanging Valley Wall, Rock Island, KT Gully, AMF.

Good long descent for experienced skiers: from the top of Big Burn on the Sneaky’s run, then on the black runs of Bear Claw, Slot, Wildcat or Zugspitze to the Campground lift.

Three restaurants on the mountain: Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, Merry-Go-Round , Soup Bowl at Cloud Nine

There are trails to suit all tastes, but Aspen Highlands is best known for its challenging trails.

The best beginner runs start from the Exhibition:: Prospector, Nugget, Exhibition, Red Onion and Apple Strudel.

Intermediate skiers will benefit from the slopes from the Cloud Nine and Loge Peak lifts. (Easier trails are from Cloud Nine). Interesting tracks on the lower slopes are Golden Horn and Thunderbowl.

For advanced skiers: Loge Peak lift has a lot of difficult trails leading to its lower station. Other than a few short runs like Suzy Q and Limelight, all the others are very difficult.
Experienced skiers can go down to either the Steeplechase ski area (sun comes here in the morning) or the Olympic Bowl (sun in the afternoon).

Some of the steepest slopes in Colorado are found above Loge Peak in the Highland Bowl, opened for skiing in 1997. You can get there by walking up from Loge Peak for 20-60 minutes, or if you are in Loge Meadow between 11:00 and 13:00, you can go up on a snowmobile.

Another area with difficult runs is on the lower slopes. To get there, you need to go up the Thunderbowl lift, and then leave along Bob’s Glades or Upper Stein.

Two restaurants on the mountain: Bumps, The Cliffhouse

Buttermilk hosted the 2002, 2003 and 2004 Winter Extreme Games.

The best place for beginner skiers . The main ski area for beginners is from the Buttermilk West ski lift.

Trails for intermediate skiers skiing starts from Cliff House. But the most fun will be the slopes under the Tiehack lift.

Most of these pistes are shown in black on the map, but this only means that these pistes are the most difficult in the area.
