About my language

As I wrote in a previous article, after working as a climber on cell towers (video how I climb a 400 foot mast) I went to work in my specialty at a local pharmaceutical company that is engaged in contract manufacturing of medicines located on different phases of testing. That is, the customer sends us a ready-made cell culture with a specific genome capable of producing the desired product, and we, following the instructions and requirements, grow it in bioreactors 25l – 50l – 200l – 500l – 2000l, simultaneously selecting test samples, and then we isolate the product. Worker efficiency is very low. At first I was surprised when people quit with the wording “work very hard.” This is despite the fact that 30-40% of the time you really do something, and the rest of the time you stick it into YouTube. Cost of living in the US in 2022 (compared to 2020)

• Apartments with garbage and water collection at least $1300 per month. Two years ago it was $950. Growth 40%.

• Electricity $40-80 per month. It remains about the same, given that my new apparts are a third smaller in size.

• Internet $50 per month. Remained also.

• Haircut once a month at a cheap barbershop $20 (was $15).

• Mobile phone $15 plus 10 GB per month including payment for a year in advance. Especially not changed. For two, it’s $30, respectively.

• Auto insurance $50 per month. Hasn’t changed.

• Gasoline $200-300 per month In two years, the cost of gasoline has increased by almost 2.5 times, from ~$1.9 per gallon of the cheapest gasoline (here it is 87) to ~$4.5.

Just in case, I repeat, the following is only my experience and my perception of reality. So, as I see it, first-generation migrants will never feel at home here. Their children, yes. And this is clearly visible to the naked eye. All sorts of meetings of compatriots with a fire and a guitar are constantly held here. Local communities are looking for Russian-speaking nannies, mechanics, doctors, dentists, lawyers. Almost everyone who has lived here for more than 10, who I know personally are making plans to return anyway. Someone is waiting until the children finish school and get back on their feet, someone is waiting for a pension, someone is saving a certain amount in the account, someone is buying land and apartments in Russia with the money earned here, someone is investing in the Russian stock market . It has become especially difficult now. Everyone has parents or relatives “there.” It is almost impossible to transport them here now. Yes, what kind of transport is there, it’s just difficult to fly.

All “our” business is aimed exclusively at our own audience, from baking Russian pies and learning to ride a bike and ending with realtors, eyebrows, finishers, car mechanics, nannies, etc. Did you notice that there is no one higher than the technical staff in this list? Ukrainians curse Russians, Russians answer that they themselves are to blame. This, thank God, does not go beyond Facebook. Both can be understood. At least both sides have their own arguments. Many companies, gyms, shops collect money for Ukraine. Everyone is in a hurry to express their anti-Russian position. Even my company sent a letter to all employees that they would not work with Russia. Another question is that in two years I have never heard a half-word that we have ever worked with her at all. After the February events, I had three interviews in different companies, for positions that I was exactly suitable for. In two cases, I had a reference from people already working there. There was no further telephone interview. In one case, after I said that I was from Russia, the recruiter smoothly turned off the conversation and said goodbye with the words “we will definitely call you back.” I do not claim that this is the reason, but there is a feeling that it is not without it. About freedom

Many people are dissatisfied with registration, which is necessary in Russia. Yes, there is no residency in the US. But! When changing the address, you are obliged: to change the rights, since the address is indicated in them, otherwise a fine; make a notification on the tax website; make a notification on the website of the migration agency; change the address in all bank accounts (otherwise the cards will stop working) and accounts of other services; change the address in the state mail, etc. And try to miss something.

About hypocrisy and beautiful wrapping

What initially seemed politeness is actually hypocrisy. It surrounds you everywhere, in shops, in banks, at work. Neighbors and salespeople tell you that they are glad to see you, the recruiter pulls “waaaaaaa” when reading your resume, colleagues make round eyes when they learn that you came from another country. They scream about ecology and sort garbage on every corner, but at the same time they order food in Styrofoam containers three times a day and Starbucks coffee with a plastic lid and stopper twice a day. They require you to come to the interview in a suit, even for a welder position, because it’s business style, but you can still have a pound of piercings on your face, blue hair and a tattoo on your forehead. They go for a run every morning because the image demands it, and then, right after the run, they go to Starbucks to drink coffee to wake up. They worry about Ukraine, but two-thirds will not be able to show it on the map. They will never let you pass on the road if, for example, it is inconvenient for you to turn or exit. If someone scratches you in the parking lot, they will most likely run away. You can arrange a business meeting, but they won’t come to it and won’t call you back. And so on and so forth. nine0007

About the level of service

A lot has already been written and shown about the level of service. Many are familiar with the phrase “where you opened the map there and go.” Only in the USA it is arranged even worse. None of their banking apps are even half as good as ours. Who used knows. Employees are often incompetent, and the solution to the problem looks like a dial-up by an employee to the hotline of their own bank, just like you yourself can do. Once I came to WellsFargo Bank five (!) times to unlock a new card that was blocked on the first purchase. Naturally, every time I took the appointment. For five visits they could not unlock it. Or Citibank. I bought a laptop from their card. Spent exactly a day on the phone, because the payment did not go through and no one understood why. Or Chase Bank. They issued me two cards and mixed up their details. I had to go to a neighboring city in person, directly to the chief manager to resolve the issue. nine0007

Can’t get anywhere without an appointment. Auto repair shop, hairdresser, bank, hospital. Yes, whatever. It is in Russia that you can drop into a savings bank on your way to work and, say, order a card. But not here.

I don’t want to write about healthcare at all. For my $1,000 a month, I can’t just get to the doctor. First you need to find a clinic that accepts patients, and make an appointment with a therapist. In the course of the article, one may get the impression that I am describing only the negative side of life in the USA. To balance, I want to talk about what I like here, and what we should learn and adopt:

• Quality of life. Renting an apartment for $1300, I have within walking distance two tennis courts, a swimming pool, a gym, a huge lake with paths around. And all this is in the green forest, and all this is free. nine0007

• Public sports in general. There are a huge number of free courts, basketball courts, parks, trails and bike paths. There are a lot of cheap fitness clubs ($10-20 per month), and the employer also pays for some of them.

• Respect for Made in the USA. If something is made in the USA, be sure you will know about it. It will be embossed in the metal in the most visible place. And people are proud of it. Is it necessary to remind our attitude to our production?

• Respect for your soldiers. It doesn’t matter where they fight. It doesn’t matter how democratic values ​​they carry. These are questions for politicians. Soldiers who serve for their country in the first place in the top of respect.
