Alpine hummingbird cooled down to 3.26 degrees Celsius
Black metaltail hummingbird living in the Andes can reduce body temperature to less than four degrees Celsius. This is a record low for birds and non-hibernating mammals. As noted in an article in Biology Letters , the ability to be very cold helps this and some other species of hummingbirds to go into a stupor on cold nights and not lose excess energy.
Most hummingbirds ( Trochilidae ) are very small birds that feed mainly on flower nectar. Despite their apparent fragility, some of them have mastered harsh habitats. For example, red hummingbirds ( Selasphorus rufus ) nest in Alaska and migrate over 6,000 kilometers twice a year. Other species were able to populate the cold and windy highlands of the Andes. Here they rise to a height of up to five thousand meters above sea level.
Andean hummingbirds have several adaptation tactics that help them survive high in the mountains. One of them is the ability to fall into a stupor at night. When it gets cold after sunset, hummingbirds slow down their metabolism and lower their body temperature ten to thirty degrees below normal. This allows them to use less energy.
A team of ornithologists led by Blair O. Wolf of the University of New Mexico decided to find out how widespread the ability to go into a torpor is among hummingbirds that inhabit the Peruvian Andes. The researchers focused on six native species that represent different evolutionary lines. The list includes giant hummingbird ( Patagona gigas ), black metaltail ( Metallura phoebe ), bronze-tailed comet ( Polyonymus caroli ), black-chested oread ( Oreotrochilus melanogaster ), copper iris ( Aglaeactis cupripennis ) and sparkling violet-ear ( Colibri coruscans ).
The study was conducted in the Andes, at an altitude of 3800 meters above sea level. Here, ornithologists caught hummingbirds with cobwebs, and then placed them in enclosures for the night. The body temperature was measured in sleeping birds, and their body weight was compared in the evening and in the morning. In total, the experiments were carried out with 26 individuals.
Night air temperature in the study area dropped to 2.4-5.9 degrees Celsius. In response to this, representatives of all the studied species fell into a stupor (only one gigantic hummingbird and one copper irid maintained a high body temperature). However, the duration and intensity of this condition differed depending on the species. For example, the body temperature of violet ears was on average eight degrees higher than that of the surrounding air.
Black metaltails showed the most intense torpor. On average, the body temperature of these birds dropped to 5.13 degrees Celsius and was only 0.87 degrees higher than the air temperature. On the coldest nights, metaltails cooled down to 3.26 degrees Celsius. This is a record low body temperature for birds and non-hibernating mammals. However, the authors do not rule out that on colder nights, metal tails cool down even more.
The same species was characterized by the longest stupor: up to 12.9 hours. For comparison, giant hummingbirds spent only 2.3 hours in this state. At the same time, the longer the stupor of hummingbirds lasted, the less mass these birds lost during the night.
Comparing the results obtained with data on hummingbird kinship, the researchers concluded that representatives of some evolutionary lines are better adapted to life in the mountains than others. First of all, we are talking about the hoard of coquette hummingbirds, which, among other species, includes metaltails, oreads and comets. The ability to fall into a deep stupor, combined with the high affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen, allowed this group to become dominant in the Andes.
While hummingbirds can cool to very low temperatures, African red-billed weavers can tolerate extreme heat. Experiments have shown that these birds are able to survive a temporary increase in body temperature up to 48 degrees Celsius without harm to themselves. This is a record high value, which is about two degrees higher than the upper limit of temperature tolerance for the vast majority of birds and mammals.

Why do we freeze with fright?
Flies, fish, people react the same way to fear: they freeze. Scientists have figured out why
Virtually all living things – from flies and fish to humans – freeze in fear when they feel threatened. So, the deer freezes on the road, blinded by the headlights of an approaching car. The fly, having caught dangerous vibrations, loses its usual mobility. This seems not entirely logical from a biological point of view: if you feel danger, run! But no. Even a person from fear falls into a state of stupor, which often prevents people from quickly leaving the disaster area or the site of a terrorist attack.
This mysterious phenomenon was recently elucidated by scientists from the Columbian Zuckerman Institute. They studied the freezing response that occurs in response to a potential threat in fruit flies – fruit flies.
Serotonin has been found to trigger the body’s instantaneous numbing response. This biologically active chemical is considered the “feel good hormone” or “happiness hormone” but is also involved in our response to fear. It is generally responsible for the regulation of mood and emotions.
“Imagine sitting in your living room with your family and all of a sudden the lights go out or the ground starts to shake,” said study leader Richard Mann. – Your reaction and the reaction of your family will be the same: you will stop, freeze and then move to a safe place. With this study, we show in flies that the rapid release of the chemical serotonin in the nervous system results in this initial freezing. And since serotonin also exists in humans, this discovery sheds light on the nature of human fear. “0005
Previous studies in flies and vertebrates have shown that serotonin also affects the animal’s speed of movement. Colombian scientists managed to confirm this fact and even shoot a video that allows you to compare the speed of ordinary flies and “paralyzed” flies with serotonin: these are 25 mm / s and 15 mm / s, respectively. The resulting image is sped up five times.
In this experiment, the scientists did not scare the flies, but directly controlled the levels of serotonin in their nervous system. As soon as they activated the neurons that produce serotonin, the fly slowed down, and as soon as they suppressed the production of the substance, it accelerated. The relationship was also observed under different experimental conditions: when the temperature changed, the flies were hungry or walked upside down on the surface.
