Sugar beet is different from the canteen: it is more demanding

The hype around sugar continues. People in a panic take it out of stores in the morning, although the authorities and suppliers assure that there is no shortage and there will not be. Soon another 500 tons will arrive in the Novosibirsk region, but it is not very successful to convince people. Many have thought about growing sugar beet in their garden – a vegetable from which they get the coveted sweet sand. Lyudmila Shubina, a well-known agronomist who remembers how Novosibirsk planted their plots with her in the 90s, explains in an extraordinary article under the heading “Seven Circles of the Garden” how much sugar you can get from one hundred square meters. Of course, provided that you strictly follow all the rules. Spoiler – very little. But first things first. nine0090
It is no coincidence that Novosibirsk residents started asking agronomists about sugar beets in the new season. Those who have land are thinking about planting it, seeing what a stir has flared up around this product.
— This problem arose not by chance, but because it became unclear what was going on in our sugar market. The people began to think about where to get it if they can’t buy it. I went through this in my life in the 90s. And then sugar beet seeds began to be sold in ordinary seed stores in bags of 20–30 pieces, and someone tried to boil sugar out of it. As a result, some of the gardeners still had it in the beds, and the rest was fed to cattle and pigs. They got such good fat, – recalls Lyudmila Shubina, agronomist, candidate of agricultural sciences. nine0003
The period of excitement in the 90s has passed, and sugar has returned to the shelves.
— This panic is premature now, it’s still not worth storing tons of sugar for the rest of your life. I speak from my own experience. And it’s also not necessary to plant a plot of sugar beets, it’s simply unprofitable,” the agronomist notes.
This crop is somewhat similar to ordinary table beet in cultivation, with the exception that sugar beet is extremely demanding on agricultural technology. Extremely demanding . She needs a warm climate, so in the West Siberian region the places that were used for her cultivation are the south of the Altai Territory, the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Minusinsk Basin.
– We have the most productive region for its cultivation – Altai Territory. In 2017, for example, very high yields were obtained – about 500 centners per hectare. These are excellent indicators. Siberians know how to grow sugar beets, but these are large-scale production facilities with appropriate equipment, the specialist emphasizes. nine0003
Sugar beet is a powerful root crop, therefore it requires a lot of space
org/Person”> Photo: Depositphotos.comShare
The soil for sugar beet should be of very good fertility – filled with phosphorus, potash and nitrogen fertilizers. The sugar content of this root crop directly depends on this.
– She is very sensitive to cruciferous fleas, which will easily eat seedlings. You should always be ready to keep drugs against it in service. Or you can sprinkle with wood ash, the agronomist advises. nine0003
The timing of sowing is always determined by the weather and warming of the soil. The temperature of the earth to a depth of ten centimeters should be +10 … +15 degrees. In Siberia, this is the period from May 20 to June 1.
– Sugar beet should grow sparser. This is a fairly powerful culture with abundant powerful leaves. If you sow thickly, you will get only “mouse tails”, and not root crops. The distance between the grooves is at least 35-40 centimeters, between the bushes in a row – at least 10 centimeters, – explained Lyudmila Shubina. nine0003
Sugar beet harvesting starts on 1 September.
— Where can I get seeds? Until 2015, our farms were engaged in seed production, but it was decided to switch to imported seeds, and now 80% of sugar beet seeds are supplied from abroad. This turned out to be a bad situation with such dependence on supplies. But for this season, the main producers purchased seeds in advance – this is the Krasnodar Territory, – the agronomist noted. “We will rely on the reasonable actions of those responsible for this and on our modern science. We will need to restore our seed fund so as not to depend on imports, and we have the capacity for this. This is the situation in general in vegetable growing. nine0003
It is not so easy to get loose sugar from sugar beet

So, we take calculators in hand. Altai craftsmen-agronomists were able to get 500 centners per hectare. But you need to understand that the beets were planted and grown according to all agronomic rules, which are almost impossible for a summer resident to implement on their site. Therefore, we reduce this figure by at least half. It turns out that one hundred square meters will give you about 250 kilograms of beets. We emphasize once again that this is the result if you bring its cultivation as close as possible to the industrial one. According to the experience of Novosibirsk summer residents, the figure can be safely reduced to 200 kilograms per hundred square meters. Let’s take it as a basis. nine0003
Now we need to understand how much of our harvested beets (and we also need to collect them correctly, and most importantly, on time) we will get sugar. Varieties of sugar beets vary greatly. The best give a content of 17-19% in the root crop, but usually seed material with a sugar content of 10-15% can get at the disposal of the summer resident.
Since we live in the Novosibirsk region and access to seed material is limited and we take into account that we bought all the seeds for this season last year, we will be content with beets with a sugar content of 10-15%. We will get 20-30 kilograms with you, having a full-fledged plant in our summer cottage. nine0003
Sugar production technology is very complicated.
- We clean the beets, all harvested 200 kg by hand. We do not have a plant with equipment. And God forbid, some speck, weed, dirt got in – everything goes to marriage.
- We make gruel by chopping the fruit into shavings, squeeze the juice under the press, having previously found this press.
- Now heat the syrup to 90 degrees. Overheated – we send to marriage.
- The syrup needs to be cleaned. To do this, lime is introduced into it and cleaned with a countercurrent movement. How to organize this countercurrent movement? We’ll have to think for ourselves. nine0141
- And only now we thicken the juice by evaporation. Pure sucrose will stand out, and here there can be the most colossal losses, because some may remain in the syrup. As a result, we can lose up to 80% of the planned volume. And the resulting sucrose still needs to be dried.
So, with incredible luck and with little loss, we managed to get 7–9 kilograms. It is better to use that same hundred, strength, time and resources for potatoes.
In Siberia, sugar beets were usually used to produce moonshine. nine0003
– Cut into cubes, add yeast and further on technology. But still it is believed that moonshine from rye and wheat is much better than beetroot. It turns out with a whitish coating, – said Lyudmila Shubina.
The harvest can also be sent to feed livestock.
In spring, the main concern of a gardener is growing seedlings. The future harvest depends entirely on how strong and healthy the plants will be. That is why it is very important to do everything right now. In March, we continue to sow peppers, eggplants, we start planting tomatoes, we are engaged in flowers. We talk about the main mistakes in growing seedlings, and most importantly – how to avoid them. nine0003
By the middle of March, seedlings of many summer residents have reached such sizes that it becomes too crowded for plants in one pot. It is very important not to miss this moment and seat them in different containers. How and when to dive seedlings of peppers and eggplants, we tell together with the agronomist. Be very careful, otherwise you can ruin your work.
Any summer resident dreams of getting a rich harvest and is looking for ways to achieve his goal. How to feed seedlings? What should you pay attention to after picking? Why not chase fashion and try to make as much fertilizer as possible? We answer in this article. nine0091

From the history of our school.
.. — MKOU Leninskaya secondary school
The school dates back to 1940, when a two-story building for 18 classes was built, the only secondary school in the area. They called it Leninskaya, since the area in the center of which it is located was called Leninsky. nine0003
The first director of the school was Andrei Petrovich Kolesnichenko. He brought the first “desks” (trestle beds), boards to the school, purchased four wall geographical maps, 40 ink bottles – non-spillers, three test tubes and alcohol lamps for chemistry lessons.
On June 22, 1941, the school made its first graduation, 26 Komsomol members graduated from it, and on June 26, 11 boys went to the front. Not everyone returned. Due to air raids on the Dyakonovo railway station, classes at the school stopped. During the occupation, the Germans set up a stable at the school. After their retreat, the school building was without windows and doors, and explosives were planted in brick ovens with the expectation that when they start to drown, an explosion will occur and many people will die. At 19In 1943, after the area was liberated from the German invaders, the school was repaired and prepared for the academic year. The first teachers with higher education were Alexander Dmitrievich Shutov, Pavel Vasilyevich Baranov, Maria Vladimirovna Vanina, Valentina Alexandrovna Tomashevskaya.
Already in 1948, 8 circles worked at the school: literary critics, young scientists, geographers, physicists, a choral circle. The room was heated with peat, it was cold in the classrooms, there were not enough textbooks, notebooks, but classes were conducted at the school. During these years, Dmitry Petrovich Pisarev worked as a director. He bought real desks for the school, equipped the school with history and geography maps. At 19In 1956, a carpentry workshop was opened, and mechanical engineering lessons began to be held.
50 years in the history of our state are associated with the development of virgin and fallow lands. 16 guys and girls – graduates of the school received vouchers for the development of virgin lands. Among them are Mikhail Vorontsov, Evdokia Maslova, Tamara Khudoshina, Valentina Tarasova, Lyubov Avdeeva, Anatoly Vorontsov. In 1957, the school was headed by Sergei Ivanovich Zubets. After the end of World War II, he spent several more years in the Far East. Participated in hostilities on the Far Eastern Front in a short war with Japan. By his efforts, the classrooms for physics, chemistry, and a music class were equipped. The first music teachers with higher education were Evgeny Davydovich Morozov, who taught lessons to the accompaniment of the violin, and the wonderful blind bayan player Anatoly Ivanovich Avdienko. Teachers and students themselves prepared visual aids, landscaped the school yard. Already in the 50s, a production brigade was born at the school, which subsequently was exemplary in the region for all the years, it was then that the red pathfinders began their work. Their searches, trips to places of military glory led to the creation of the school Museum of Military and Labor Glory. The creative work of the first teachers of the school laid the foundation for significant creative achievements of students in competitions and competitions in the future. nine0003
Years passed, the number of schoolchildren increased significantly, there were not enough classes for everyone, classes were conducted in three shifts. And then it was decided to build an extension to the existing school building, and then to build a new modern building. In 1970, the school was already headed by the director Anatoly Fedorovich Zakharov. He is seeking permission to build an extension to the school. Later, Anatoly Fedorovich Zakharov achieved the construction of a new school building. In 1973, the annex was put into operation, and the school switched to a cabinet system. In the same year, the school labor and recreation camp began its work. a 1974 was the year of the introduction of NOT (scientific organization of labor) into the work of the school. 70 years gave the school the best hockey team in the region, the best women’s basketball team, the KID (international friendship club, leaders – foreign language teachers Kalinina Polina Pavlovna and Yanochkina Lidia) worked perfectly Nikiforovna) pioneer and Komsomol organizations.
The 1980s in the history of the school are remembered for the shock work of the production team (the best in the region) weeding sugar beets, harvesting vegetables, fattening young animals. nineteenIn 87, on an area of 110 hectares, a crop of 350 centners per hectare was harvested. With the money earned, the guys made a trip to Leningrad. Moscow, Tuapse, Kyiv. And such incentive trips were annual. In 1980, a school shooting gallery was opened.
In May 1989, Vladimir Sergeevich Kucheryavenko took the helm of the school. He had to complete the construction of a new school building and import equipment. The opening of the new modern school took place on September 1, 1990. This allowed the school to switch to a new structure of education: for the first time, classes were formed with in-depth study of the subjects of mathematical and humanitarian cycles. Today, specialized education has firmly entered the system of school work. Constantly improving, it brought the educational process in it to a qualitatively new level. The school does not lose its leadership position in educational and creative activities. nine0003
On the basis of the school there are internship sites for teachers of the Kursk region. School teachers share their experience with their colleagues.
The success of the school has been repeatedly noted by the administration of the Oktyabrsky district of the Kursk region, the government of the Kursk region, and in 2007 by the Government of the Russian Federation. This year the school became the winner of the priority national project “Education”.
Today the school is equipped with new modern equipment, successfully introducing the work of the Federal State Educational Standard into practice. In the 2016 academic year, the school was among the winners of the regional competition “The Best School of Russia”. In 2017, the school became the winner of the competition “100 Best Schools in Russia”, and the headmaster V.S. Kucheryavenko was recognized as the best headmaster of the year.
