This time Anne-Lise’s eyes shimmered with challenge.

That evening Derek enjoyed listening to Anne-Lise playing Chopin for the first time in a long time. Robert was not there: he had left for a meeting in the morning for the elections to the House of Lords. Derek longed to be in his shoes. Hoping to entertain Anne-Lise, one bright morning when they were walking in the park, he invited her to accompany him to London, where he went on business.

– Would you like to go shopping, sightseeing? We’re staying at my Aunt Gertrude’s so even Derek can’t say it’s indecent.

“That’s not the point,” she answered calmly. “I am accompanying you to London, not to continue our relationship, but to visit an old friend of my father’s, Professor Sanderville. He accepted the sad news of the death of William Devon courageously – only two tears rolled down his rosy cheeks. There was no end to the professor’s questions. After tea and biscuits, Anne-Lise finally decided to make a request to him.

“I would like to rent the most inexpensive apartment,” she told him, “and even then only for a few months. I want to wait out the rainy season before returning to India. My father and I thought that travel at this time was impossible.

– Why don’t you stay with me and then go to India with me in September? asked Professor Sanderville. “You may have difficulty with the young Clavel brothers, whom you will put in a difficult position … but no one can accuse me of secret intentions. “A very self-possessed young lady,” she remarked to Robert after Anne-Lise had gone into the room prepared for her to change for tea. It’s a shame she’s from the common people.
