Open Letter to Potential Owners of Fred Astaire Dance Studio

Over the years I have been asked why I stayed in the dance business for so long. When someone asks this question, it’s usually because they’re under the impression that people are only part-time dance teachers, or that they’re just waiting for a better job to come along. After talking about how much I love this business and what it has done for me, they looked at me with curiosity and said: “Oh wow… I wish I knew about this when I started looking for a job” and “Do it. do you know anyone who hired people like me? Without going into the details of the answers to their specific questions, I would like to give you my idea of ​​how these conversations usually went – on planes and in airports, at conferences or in waiting rooms – with the example of a conversation below that I have I was with a young man on a flight to the FADS National Dance Competition a few years ago. I use it because it perfectly captures how I felt from the beginning of my career with Fred Astaire Dance Studios until I retired this year.

JR: I noticed that you are hard at work on your spreadsheets, are you an accountant?

A: I’m a data analyst at a large company and we’re in the process of reviewing a new product, trying it out in a few places before launch.

JR: How long have you been in this activity?

A: Eight years. I liked it at first, but now I feel like it’s almost recurring year after year. Different projects based on the same skills, no problem or creativity. I think I might be ready for something new…spread my wings, so to speak. What are you doing?

JR: Taking your word for it, I’ve been “spreading my wings” in my business for 55 years, and the funny thing is, my wings never get tired. I never could have known then what would be in front of me 55 years later. When I tell people, “I work at Fred Astaire Dance Studios,” they look at me a little. puzzled and say, “Can you really work full-time in a job like this?” I just laugh and say that my parents thought the same. I laughed then too. And years later, when they came to the event that we hosted, they were absolutely amazed at how prestigious and large the Fred Astaire Dance Studios Network was.

A: I can’t believe you can work in a dance studio for so long!

JR: It’s funny what you say, I never thought, never, that it was a long period of time. At the beginning of each New Year, I review the past year and say to myself, “I can’t believe I’ve gone through all the other years without knowing what I just learned.” In fact, this is the kind of business that completely changes itself every year, acquiring new business acumen, a better understanding of communications, and better goals. Your skills are challenged, you become more motivated and have a clearer idea of ​​where you are going in your future. There are endless travel opportunities, great growth opportunities, and fantastic earning opportunities. I never thought I’d be in the dance business. I entered Fred Astaire’s dance studio wanting to learn a few steps and have since learned all about dancing. And if I may say so… I’m a good dancer. I became a manager, I became a studio owner, then five studios, then I became a regional director for all of New England, I bought stock in the company, I became one of its owners, and as I sit here talking to you, I am now president. I could talk to you about the benefits, rewards and satisfaction that are part of a career at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, but we’d be talking for the rest of this 4 hour flight and still only cover a small part of what I’ve been up to. Why did you take up your field?

A: I have always enjoyed working with shapes, solving problems and being around people. I went to a university that I really liked, majored in economics, and found a job with my current employer, IBM. I enjoyed my work environment, the people I met and learned much more than I was ever taught in school. However, after about 6 years things started to pick up and things were more or less on auto-pilot. Now, 2 years later, it hits me like a stone: do I still want to do the same thing with the same people and so on for the rest of my life? I feel like I have a lot of potential to grow and have a lot to offer however when I look at my current position there is a limit that I will reach and I feel like I will regret it if I don’t try to find what I am a passion for something creative and more adventurous that will bring out all my qualities.

JR: I understand what you mean, when I was a dance teacher, whether I taught one student or a couple, many of them expressed the same thing. Then, when I met with them a few years later, I asked them how and what they were doing, and the vast majority said, “Still doing the same old thing.” And I would continue by reminding them what we talked about the last time we saw each other.

A: I could never do something like that. I’m not that good at dancing… I can get by, but I’m not very good at it and don’t feel like I can fit in. Plus, it’s probably a little late for me… I’m almost 29.

JR: I was 22 when I started and I was still learning to dance at your age even though I was already teaching. I’m sure I already mentioned that I can’t dance at all. Actually I was sorry! I wish I knew before the age of 22 how easy it would be to learn to dance. Being a good dancer is not about being physically fit, it’s more about attitude and wanting more for yourself. We teach students all the time and many of them become really good, so it goes without saying that we can do the same for our dance teachers. Better yet, if you’re aiming to own your own studio, there’s a comprehensive training program and ongoing support to ensure you have the same opportunities for growth and success that I have.

It’s funny now, when I look back at that particular conversation, how many people didn’t realize then how big the ballroom dancing business was. Unfortunately, the dance industry isn’t always in the picture of “good work” to be done, which is NOT the way it should be. Fortunately, this is changing – with the growing popularity of ballroom dancing on TV, in Hollywood movies, at wedding receptions – more and more people are starting to work in our field as dance instructors, studio managers and studio owners. It’s exciting! And it gave me, well… dancing.
