Founded in
1843 in Graz, Austria, the School Sisters of St.
Francis went to
Czech Republic and from there to the places of our present activity. Our founders
are Franziska Anthony Lamplova and Hyacinth Magdalena Zagalka. nine0005
Antonia Lamplova was born on August 28
1807 at Mayrhof, in present-day Austria. She was a student and then
teacher at Anna Engel’s private school in Graz. After the death of the owner, she took
take charge of the school. Together with other teachers, she learned
Franciscan way of life and entered the Third Order of St. Francis.
Founders: Franziska Antonia Lamplova and Hyacinth Magdalena Zagalkova
On behalf of all teachers, in 1841 she wrote to Roman Sebastian Zangerle, Bishop of the diocese of Graz, about the creation of an Institute that would be entirely dedicated to the education and upbringing of adolescent girls. The bishop saw an urgent need for education and upbringing, and therefore addressed a request to Emperor Ferdinand I, who, on 29October 1842 approved the establishment of the Institute of School Nurses in Graz, and to Pope Gregory XVI, who approved the statutes of the Institute on July 15, 1843.
The vestment of the first sisters took place on September 29, 1843, during the Holy Mass, at which the establishment of the Institute of School Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in Graz. Anthony received the name Francis and became his abbess. The citizens of Graz welcomed the founding of the Institute with joy and openness. With the support of Bishop Roman Sebastian Zangerle, the sisters managed to buy a bigger house, and an external school, a boarding school, and a kindergarten were added to the free school for poor girls. nine0005

In 1849 there were changes in the internal life of the institute. Francis Anthony
fell ill with tuberculosis, which also affected her father and brother, as well as
several sisters she took care of. Illness caused her
physical weakness. She could not lead either the school or the community. Her

The Institute split. Since Antonia strove for the unity of the sisters, she decided
leave the Institute she founded.
Shortly after her departure on May 27, 1851, she
died at her brother Heribert’s house in Graz. She was forty-three years old. So

invitation of the Vatican Council (1962-1965) to return to the origins of our
community history began to be re-evaluated. A study of the history revealed
that Franziska Anthony Lamplova is a new woman, a woman of unity, humility and
trust. The woman who gave us charisma, our mission for this world. In 1977
Franziska Anthony Lamplova was officially recognized as the founder
School Sisters of Saint Francis.
Opening of a monastery in Kazakhstan

August 14, 1993 the first three School Sisters of St. Francis from Slovakia arrived in Almaty. The sisters, in cooperation with the Franciscan brothers, were engaged in catechesis of believers in Almaty and in the villages, as well as treatment in the outpatient clinic.
Mission
Our first
sisters were teachers who were involved in the education of girls in society,
who saw no need for their education. The first sisters in the Czech Republic
focused on working with young children.
Over the years, our area of ministry has expanded to include: primary and secondary education (teachers and leaders), work in hospitals, dispensaries, orphanages, kindergartens, nursing homes, social work, psychological counseling , “ad gentes” missions, adult formation, catechesis, camps for children and youth, hostels, parish ministry…

and evidence of poverty, we wear monastic clothes: black / white veil, white
blouse, black / brown sundress (or suit). During work, we can wear
white, brown, blue or gray clothes. Also a sign of dedication for us is
Franciscan cross and wedding ring.

Girls who wish to enter our monastery must be practicing Catholics, after Baptism (conversion) for at least 5 years. Contact should be established with the nearest congregation of sisters and regular visits to the congregation.
