Plot Bidibidi refugee camp: sprouts of hope despite poverty

Bidibidi refugee camp in Uganda is one of the largest in the world with 246,000 inhabitants. It was set up in 2016 at the height of the conflict in neighboring South Sudan, with more than 3,000 people crossing the border daily. Uganda, a developing country in Africa, has taken in 1.4 million refugees, mostly from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

“Bidibidi” is a relatively young settlement with still unformed economic and social ties. People are barely making ends meet, the host state is not able to provide sufficient assistance, UNHCR resources are also small. In addition, restrictions on movement associated with the pandemic have exacerbated the situation. “Hopelessness pushes people to commit suicide,” Orkhan Nasibov, head of the UNHCR office in Yumba, Uganda, told the UN News Service. – In 2021 there were 89attempts, six people died, the rest were saved. Women, men, and even children lay hands on themselves.

Recently, the UN Refugee Office has been developing innovative projects on the territory of Bidibidi aimed at improving the economic well-being of the population. These are only the first steps so far, but “they give hope”, according to the UNHCR. One such initiative is a soap factory.

The Bidibidi refugee settlement in Uganda is one of the largest in the world. In the photo: collective farm.

Soap Business

“When the UNHCR paid $1.4 million in 2020 to provide a village with soap, we thought, ‘That’s a huge amount! Why not make this soap ourselves?’” recalls Nasibov. It turned out that even large national soap producers buy raw materials – palm oil – in the neighboring country of Uganda – Congo. UNHCR allocated $50,000 for the purchase of equipment, specialists were found, and the work began to boil.

Today, the plant has not yet reached its full capacity – 60 tons of soap per month, but already produces a thousand kilograms per day. This, of course, is not enough to meet the needs of all the inhabitants of “Bidibidi”, but the company is increasing its capacity every day.

The soap has been certified according to local laws and can now be sold in stores. At the same time, it costs UNHCR twice as much as before. Moreover, having switched to a commercial basis, the cooperative decided to help the Office in the implementation of new projects in the settlement: the first donation was allocated on June 20, symbolically coinciding the gift with the World Refugee Day.

When the collective farm is truly voluntary

Another, larger project in Bidibidi is a collective farm. Land in Uganda is owned by private owners, and refugees rent it from them to grow crops. Often we are talking about the area, which still needs to be cleared of shrubs and trees in order to make the land suitable for cultivation. Whether the harvest will turn out or not is not yet known, but the rent must be paid, and the owner may demand his plot back in a year.

The UNHCR invited refugees and local farmers to unite in collective farms in order to cultivate the land together, bear the costs, collect and distribute profits. And it turned out that it is much easier together: instead of one acre of land, the collective farm rents hundreds of acres at once, respectively, and the crop is enough for everyone, and they are also taken to the markets. Thanks to the transition from individual to collective farming, 3,800 acres of land were cultivated in 2020, already 5,004 acres in 2021, and 4,000 acres of land were developed this year in the first quarter alone. The total profit from the harvest obtained last year amounted to $1.2 million. No one is forcibly pulling settlers into collective farms – this is a voluntary and beneficial business for everyone.

Fisheries

With UNHCR support, a fish farm has also been set up in the Bidibidi settlement. “We don’t have rivers,” says a representative of the Department, “but we have drilled a well and are installing ten concrete pools, where at the moment there are already 20,000 fish. In the future, we hope to produce one hundred thousand kilograms of fish per month.

It is planned to sell fish on the territory of the settlement at half the market price. They managed to save money on fry, which they learned to hatch right there, in the settlement, and on food, which is also produced here by collecting fly larvae. “This is excellent food, 500 kilograms of protein for fish every week, which we get almost for free,” explained Orkhan Nasibov.

UNHCR / O. Nasibov

With the support of UNHCR, a fish breeding farm has been established in the settlement of Bidibidi.

“So far, this is just a drop in the ocean,” says Nasibov. “Many refugees here are still in a desperate situation. But the first steps have been taken. We hope that there will be more businesses.” They decided to spend part of the proceeds on vocational education programs for high school students in order to develop an entrepreneurial spirit in them.

“We hope that after finishing school and with the financial support of UNHCR, they will open their own business ventures,” said a UN News Service source.

And last year, the German NGO Music Connects and Brass for Africa from Uganda, UNHCR partners, launched the LAB UGABDA project to teach music to refugee children. The initiative received a great response – about 650 children now attend classes. The settlement also received a donation of a mobile recording studio that can serve as an impromptu outdoor concert stage and movie theater.

Third Country Resettlement Program

“Bidibidi” is a living organism, some constantly come here, some try to return to their homeland, although it is still not safe there. Each year, a certain quota is allocated under the resettlement program to third countries, but it takes many years to wait for your turn. “Many believe that they will be able to return to their homeland, they hope so,” says Orkhan Nasibov.

Sprouts of beauty from the border garrison > Heading in Samara

Today Sergey Lemekhov’s collection of violets is the largest in Samara

What hobbies can an army officer and a coach in applied military sports have? It seems, anything, but not breeding flowers. But Sergey Lemekhov, a resident of Samara, has been growing violets for more than two decades. His collection of these flowers is considered the largest in the city, it has about one and a half thousand species!

The first leaf in the “blockade”

In 1989, a young rocket officer was sent to the Caucasus. Border point near the settlement of Gombori in Georgia, near the borders of Turkey and Azerbaijan. The service was in a separate garrison without ties with the “big world”. Sergey brought the first violet leaf from one of his colleagues, grew a flowering miracle out of it and could no longer resist: he got more and more new varieties of violets, books, magazines on growing these flowers.

Very soon, the Gombori rocket men began to move into a blockade position: Georgia withdrew from the USSR, the “hand of the Ministry of Defense” no longer reached the distant garrisons, the brigade remained at an altitude of 1760 meters above sea level without water, gas, electricity and with a mythical salary, because that she had not been paid for several months. Light was given for an hour in the morning, for an hour in the evening. Officers’ wives tried to cook food on kerosene gas, but there was nothing to buy groceries with. The command of the missile brigade gave the order to give the military rations from emergency reserves. And at that difficult time, the family of officer Lemekhov already had at home … 20 pots of violets. Those flowers were also forced to endure the “blockade” and, as if understanding the complexity of the situation, withstood all the hardships in spite of.

Our people don’t give up! Let’s start all over!

In 1992, the rocket men from Gombori were withdrawn from the territory of Georgia through the Cross Pass. The Lemekhovs packed 20 pots of their violets into containers. Alas, the flowers did not survive the long journey. And the officer family, having reached Samara, started all over again.

The family had to change five apartments in the new location. And on each one they started by preparing a comfortable and bright place for violets. Now the Lemekhovs live on the 14th floor with their collection. About 700 pots were lifted here on foot, because the elevator in the new building was not yet working. Today, a specially insulated loggia and a lighted corridor are lined with flowers.

Serious level of a “non-serious” case

Upon learning about an officer’s hobby, at first people are usually perplexed and shrug. But as soon as he sees the colorful sea, bewilderment is replaced by admiration. And so one of the relatives, who came to stay with the Lemekhovs, from the threshold began to tease the overly romantic officer for “a frivolous occupation.” And then the guest began to sit for a long time on the loggia, where lilac, pink, white, cherry live bouquets looked at him from all sides.

Sergey Lemekhov has a huge library of violets and vast experience. An amateur professionally advises everyone. When the collection grew to a solid size and required more and more financial investments, the Lemekhovs began to organize exhibitions of violets in Samara. This is not a business idea at all, it just needs support to maintain a huge home flower garden.

Over time, many Samara violet growers rallied around them, it turned out something like an interest club. Now the club has disbanded, but the bonds between passionate people are strong, because the collections grow through the exchange. Sergey and Marina Lemekhov correspond with collectors from other cities and add new specimens to their shelves leaf by leaf, variety by variety. So why do a military officer need flowers – now a coach in military applied sports of the CSK Air Force? Sergey Lemekhov gives the answer of an incorrigible romantic:

– Beauty rules the world, for me it was decided once and for all. We have different people appear at exhibitions. Many now come to pick up violets exclusively for the color of the wallpaper. This means that things will not work for them, because they are in no hurry to understand the meaning of the flower. But the violet is a symbol of calmness, peace, depth of thought.
