Learning Centers – South Shore Children’s Center

Every classroom engages learning centers throughout the day.  Our thematic curriculum is reflected in the teacher or student directed activities.  We believe children learn through play, and our learning centers are designed to provide those opportunities.

Children are introduced and exposed to English language arts through a multitude of lessons and strategies developed to encourage emergent reading readiness and skills. We provide formal handwriting lessons, sight word vocabulary, and manipulative experiences all supporting the goal of a strong reading foundation.

We offer a print-rich environment that allows the center to become part of the overall learning experience.

Math and Manipulative Center

We introduce your child to different elements that build fine motor skills used for writing and dexterity. These include math attributes, Unifix cubes, patterning, puzzles, sorting and lacing toys, houses, farms with people and animals, as well as table and floor puzzles of all sizes and shapes and non-competitive board and table games.

We begin with the concrete exploration of mathematical skills and offer abstract concepts in a progressive manner.

Utilizing hands-on, age-appropriate activities, children explore science through: cooking/measuring cups and spoons, liquid measurement, dry measurement; magnifiers, microscopes, light activity table, tape measures, prisms, magnets, balance scale, seasonal science activities, and more. Each week, we offer a different science experience related to our overall theme.

We promote readings from a variety of quality literature and medium, including flannel board, Big Books, and independent reading. We also have a listening center where your child may use headphones to read books on tape.

Table art, easel art, cutting, gluing, collaging, the list goes on and on! Here in the art center, children create artwork that reflects our monthly theme, or the letter of the week.

Fine motor and gross motor skills are developed and enhanced with table and easel activities. They can also let their own creativity run free. We believe that it is the process, not the product which matters. As a result, the projects are not only teacher-designed but also kid-created!

Equipped with all the toys that children love, this center promotes cooperative play and verbalization. We believe in playing to learn through the use of creative expression; which allows children to play out the many different roles that exist within a community and home environment. Building blocks, Legos, marble works, cars, boats, trains, and planes are used to teach the basics of building and imagination.

Singing, instruments, music appreciation, movement, and rhythm are daily activities the children enjoy. Gross motor skills are developed through structured activities as well as free play, using balls, toys with wheels, parachutes, balance beams, climbing and crawling apparatus, mats,

and beanbags.  We have a gymnasium space, an indoor playroom and an outdoor playground to enhance our gross motor activities.

The South Shore facility offers:

Global Citizenship Program: Our Global Citizenship program is dedicated to empowering children and helping them learn to respect and appreciate all people. This unique program uses a project approach to explore the similarities and differences among cultures. Our children become confident in their own culture, and eagerly embrace opportunities to learn new concepts. Through this approach, children also gain important school-readiness skills including independent learning, critical thinking, intercultural understanding, confidence, creative problem-solving, and teamwork.

Outdoor Playground: While all our facilities provide clean, safe, and modern spaces for children, we are especially proud of our professionally designed playgrounds. Our playgrounds are fun, challenging, and appropriate for all children ages 12 months through 6 years old. During our Outdoor Activity periods, the children can be physically active while participating in developmental activities.
