Salaries and vacancies for juniors: what is the state of the market for testers

What is the state of the job market in QA now? Would you like English? What salary at the start is adequate, and what is too much to ask for?

This article will answer the most important questions of those who are just starting their way to becoming a tester.

How do people get tested? Perhaps there are two approaches. The first is when they learn about such an area by chance: someone will advise, say: “You know, but you are very attentive, would you like to become a tester?”. The second is when a person thinks about which career path to choose, looks for information about stable, reliable professions and enters the IT field. nine0003

In the second case, the choice is most often between programming and testing. And usually one or another is chosen, evaluating their own temperament, mind and inclination to this or that activity. But one of the most important factors is always the salary. As well as the number of vacancies in the market and the willingness of employers to take on newcomers.

However, after February 2022, companies began to massively leave the Russian market. Moreover, not only and not so much IT companies left, as representatives of completely different areas. As a result, people who lost their jobs in, for example, retail decided to try their hand at IT. There are more applicants. nine0003

“Are testers in demand now? Yes, of course. The only thing is that now the market is a little walking on wages.

There are more Junes. And they are very different. There are already with little commercial experience, there are those who have just completed some kind of training. Everyone is looking for internships, some are free, some are paid. There are actually a lot of applicants. The age is very different, ranging from 18 years old to 40+, sometimes resumes from 16 years old even slip through. A lot of age appeared, let’s say, after 25.

In general, there are many juniors, and when you start to communicate with them on skills, knowledge, you understand that they are all very different. Just recently, we were looking for juniors for a project – they are rather weak in theory, there are no practical skills.

How to get experience if no experience is accepted?

I will not discover America – look and look for internships, you can do it for free. Look for a variety of opportunities: work for free for experience and a line on your resume in any projects. Maybe not even very interesting. Pull up the skins. Previously, large companies often arranged internships for juniors and after them they selected people for projects like banks, large marketplaces. Summing up, I think the market is the same as it was. The only thing is that now the newcomers are somewhat disorganized. And they put up absolutely draconian salaries. Everyone has very high expectations – 70, 80 thousand. And because of all this, they are now very difficult to sort and find the ones you need.

But testers will always be in demand by companies that care about product quality. If earlier there was a deficit in IT, now it has begun to decline due to the departure of some companies and the reduction of employees. However, there has not yet been a surge in new resumes: , apparently, both companies and candidates have temporarily switched to standby mode.

Those who just want to start a career should be proactive, enterprising and look for opportunities for training, practice, and internships. You need to continue to download your knowledge and be prepared for the fact that the employment process can be lengthy. Also, trainees / juniors should not neglect theoretical knowledge and need to strengthen it, because confident knowledge of theory, combined with personal qualities, is a competitive advantage. ” nine0003

What to do for those who have just finished the course?

If we analyze the situation described by our HR, it turns out that newly minted juniors should:

  • In parallel with the search for a main job, find an internship. Most often they are not paid, or they are paid minimally. Experience with real projects will give you a huge head start.
  • Adequately assess salary expectations at the start. 60, 70 thousand is unrealistic. 30 thousand is better. At the very least, you can not indicate the expected salary at all. nine0056
