Following graduation, Human Development and Family majors work in many fields, including early childhood education, child advocacy, research, public health or public policy. Find jobs as teachers, social workers, marriage and family therapists, school psychologists, child care advocates or program administrators.

Not only have I met amazing friends and amazing professors, the program gave me the opportunity to do my student teaching in a Head Start classroom, which ultimately landed me in my dream job with Head Start.

Additional Program Information

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing grants Child Development permits to those preparing to teach children in early childhood education programs and in after-school child care programs. The course work provided by the Sierra College Human Development and Family Department is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing as meeting the requirements for the California Child Development Permits.

Students may contact a full-time Human Development & Family faculty member to discuss how to obtain a Permit.

Are you currently employed in a licensed Early Childhood Education, Transitional Kindergarten, Before and After School, or Licensed Family Child Care Home program and taking a class at Sierra College?

This is a semester-to-semester grant, so you must apply each semester you are eligible.  The grant pays $25 per unit and will reimburse the cost of a Child Development permit (typically $125) and fingerprinting fees.

The specialty “Preschool education” was opened in 1986.
Kindergarten teacher is a teacher involved in the education and upbringing of preschool children (up to 7 years of age). The main area of ​​activity of the educator is connected with organizing the stay of children in a preschool educational organization, conducting games and activities with children, monitoring their safety and health.
The main professional task of an educator is to create conditions for the harmonious development of children.
A teacher of preschool children should know:
• priority directions for the development of the educational system of the Russian Federation;
• laws and other normative legal acts regulating educational activities;
• Convention on the Rights of the Child;
• Pedagogy, child, developmental and social psychology;
• psychology of relationships, individual and age characteristics of children and adolescents, age physiology;
• methods and forms of monitoring the activities of pupils;
• pedagogical ethics;
• the basics of working with text editors, spreadsheets, e-mail and browsers, multimedia equipment;
• internal labor regulations of an educational institution;
• regulations on labor protection and fire safety.
The educator must be able to:
• understand the problems of children, find a common language with any child;
• maintain group discipline by avoiding harsh methods;
• put into practice various methods of development, education and upbringing;
• identify the interests and inclinations of each child and advise parents on their further development;
• communicate with parents, resolve conflicts, listen to different opinions and wishes.
The number of students in the training group is 25 people. Classes are held with a group, as well as with the division of the group into subgroups (foreign language, computer science, computer science and information and communication technologies in professional activities, interdisciplinary courses, educational and industrial practices).

Educational and work practice in professional modules is carried out in a concentrated or dispersed manner in accordance with the calendar study schedule.
