The desire to play it safe is the riskiest desire in the world.

Golden Handcuffs – When you stay at a job you’d rather quit just for the money.

I thought I’d be working at Netflix forever. The highest salaries in the market. Freedom and respect. Unlimited paid non-working hours. What more could you want?

So when I left Netflix in May 21, everyone thought I was nuts. Parents were the first to raise a storm. Coming from China, where they barely had enough food, they thought that I would quit any job if there were any difficulties that they had to go through to come to America.

“Just keep your head down and do your job!” they said.

“Be grateful for what you have!” they continued to protest.

None of my friends could believe it either.

“What about free food?!”

“You work for a company that is one of the five largest IT giants!”

“Just relax and invest, bro!”

The only argument I heard against quitting that made me think a little was from my mentor at Netflix, who said that I shouldn’t quit without finding another job because that way, “I’ll be without the leverage that was my high salary at Netflix.

Leisure and Investing – Waiting for the IPO

This forced me to take a break for three whole days, but then I quit my job anyway. Now, eight months later, I am 100% sure that this was the right decision.

In my article, I talk about three factors that helped me understand the real value of the “golden handcuffs” and understand why even a salary of half a million dollars a year could not force me to stay in a job that I no longer liked.

Attempted role reversal

With the offices closing in March 2020, the best things about work – communication, colleagues, benefits – are gone. All that’s left is the work itself.

So if initially all you have is a job that you don’t like, COVID will amplify that hatred 10 times.

I did not like my job. But it was not always so.

I worked at Netflix for almost four years as a Senior Software Engineer in Development. At first, it seemed to me that I was being paid too generously for my studies. And for two years I was fine with it. The culture of Netflix was very different from, for example, the culture at Amazon, which was very secretive. Here, leaflets for each product are available for review by all employees. It was equivalent to what you would be paid for an MBA.

Netflix’s transparency in all of its product decisions has been one of the best things about working there. This contrasts with the more secretive culture of Apple and Amazon.

Nevertheless, over time, it began to seem like copy-paste.

There was no question that engineering was needed at Netflix, but the big question was for what product. Therefore, I wanted to move to the product management department so that my efforts would be fruitful. I spent two years non-stop communicating with every department and applying for every position I could find.

Every department I went to, I talked about how I would prioritize if I became a product manager: customer service, developer productivity, studio building, partnerships, and notifications. I offered to create a dedicated position on my team to help manage the growing infrastructure. I also suggested that other PMs could delegate more of their tasks to me to free up time for themselves to grow and develop their departments. All of these proposals were ultimately unsuccessful.

I spent 2 years going in circles trying to get a PM job at Netflix but ended up running out of options.

Looking back, I realize my mistake. I thought if I just tried harder, I would eventually get this job. But now I understand, sometimes things get out of hand because of problems in the organizational structure. Netflix doesn’t have processes in place to support horizontal role changes like this. I have never come across in this company the practice of an engineer successfully transitioning to product management.

I was offered new opportunities and collaboration with the product management department to develop my product skills, for which I am, of course, grateful. But cooperation is not the same as a position. After all, you can’t just read a book about swimming and expect to learn how to swim. You need to get into the water.

Decreasing Motivation, Decreasing Productivity

Towards the end of my unsuccessful PM job search, I felt that a high salary was becoming an increasingly bad bargain. Before that, I was earning and studying. Now I just made money.

My team’s goals and my interests also began to diverge. My team was moving more in a more engineering-focused direction, including platform migration. And my interests shifted towards entrepreneurship and product management. The engineering job assigned to me was no longer applicable to any future job that I would have to do

It seemed that I was again making a previous career mistake – staying in a job that was not very suitable for me, longer than I should have. This mistake is more costly than people think. If you stay another 2 years in the job you want to leave, and do so in more than 5 companies in your life, you will just waste ten years of your life doing something you don’t want to do. I absolutely felt like I was wasting my time.

Nothing is more troubling than missed work messages.

My motivation was weakening, and with it my performance was also declining. I became less involved in meetings, minimized any work that was not directly related to the development of product management skills, and began to avoid communication. The only motivation in the end was to simply not get fired. It was a little sad to realize that the moment had come when my bar had fallen so low. And in doing so, I struggled to cross even that.

Unfortunately, my manager started to notice this. During a stormy performance review that lasted over two hours, he said that I should

1) be more involved in the platform migration;

2) be more sociable.

According to him, I had to improve in these areas “if I wanted to stay in the team.”

Reassessment of life priorities during COVID-19

The pandemic has become a wake-up call.

Watching millions of people die from COVID made me realize that tomorrow is not guaranteed. You can die from COVID before any of your dreams come true. And the longer you put it off, the higher the risk that it will never come true . Therefore, if there is something that you want, you need to decide on it right now.

No more “next time”. Right now.

A delayed dream is a dream abandoned. My favorite quote of all time.

I figured out the real price of the golden handcuffs. The price is your youth, your time and your life. People are not entirely accurate in estimating these costs, because a salary is a hard figure, while the value of youth is more intangible. But just because something is hard to measure doesn’t make it any less valuable than something quantifiable, like money. It’s hard to measure the value of a brand, mental health, or love, but we know it’s important.

Seeing people dying from COVID made me afraid that one day my tombstone would say:

“Here lies Michael. He spent his life doing jobs he never wanted to do. Then he caught COVID and died. Rest in peace”.

The longer I stayed at a job I didn’t like, the more likely it was that this inscription would end up on my tombstone. I knew I had to act now—I couldn’t keep postponing difficult career-related issues until later. I had to quit.

The Last Days

I saw a bad performance review and the threat of being fired as a way out. But I wanted to get severance pay first without being fired.

So I made a one-to-one offer to my manager a few weeks after we discussed severance pay.

I said something like, “My productivity is declining because my motivation is declining. I don’t see how to improve it, because the goals of the team are increasingly at odds with my career goals. What if we just discuss Netflix’s severance pay now instead of dragging it out? This way Netflix will save money, you can find a better specialist faster, and I can start doing what I want. A win-win solution for everyone.”

Release

After he discussed this with Human Resources, I had one last general meeting with them where they agreed to release me early and received my final severance pay. The golden handcuffs were done away with.

Life after Netflix

I thought that my life would end after leaving the corporation, but it turned out to be exactly the opposite. I was worried that I wouldn’t have a social life, but in fact, after I got fired, I met even more people – creators, entrepreneurs, and builders.

I saw an improvement in my mental health as the state of anxiety I had from constantly worrying about missing another email or message disappeared.

I now feel a deep peace within, an unshakable faith that everything will be fine, even if any future success is not guaranteed right now. The fact that I am typing this text on a Sunday evening means that I have no problem with weekend overtime. There is no better incentive than realizing the value of your own work.

Working only on projects that energize me, I realized the irony of fate, because I began to receive a much higher income, even in comparison with the previous place.

It has been eight months since I quit my job in May 2021. I took a break until the end of 2021. I lived in New York for several months, toured Utah and Arizona, where I just enjoyed life.

I decided to devote myself completely to working for myself. Although I’m just starting out and don’t have any real reliable sources of income, I believe that if I work on what energizes me, good things will happen.

I now truly believe that playing it safe is the riskiest choice you can make. When you play safely, you are also exposed to all dangers, except that you have no chance of a positive result. As Helen Keller once said:
