The Intergenerational Learning Center (ILC) is an award-winning child care program located within Providence Mount St. Vincent in West Seattle.

Both planned and spontaneous activities and programs for children take place throughout the building and campus which is also home to more than 400 older adults. Five days a week, the children and residents come together in a variety of planned activities such as music, dancing, art, lunch, storytelling or just visiting.

These activities result in mutual benefits for both generations. This enhances the opportunities for children and people of all ages to have frequent interaction and is an integral part of the Mount’s intergenerational community.

The ILC offers children opportunities:

• To learn about the normal aging process
• To accept people with disabilities
• To be involved with people who are two or three generations apart
• To become part of an extended family
• To help them reduce their fear of older adults
• To receive and give unconditional and unbounded love and attention

Residents and program participants benefit from:

• Frequent interaction with children throughout their day
• Physical activity in playing with the children
• Opportunities to play, laugh and enjoy the spirit and joy that children bring to their home environment
• A renewed sense of self-worth
• An opportunity to transfer knowledge
• The ability to serve as role models

In a problem-solving atmosphere, children are encouraged to think of solutions to problems that arise throughout their day, with their teachers acting as facilitators and guides.

When children are learning that they are capable of solving problems, the teacher is neither permissive nor authoritarian.

Children are trusted and encouraged by teachers to resolve problems that may occur in their environment, with materials and in their relationships. In addition, the children must take responsibility for their actions.

Adult to child ratio is 1:3. Our infant room is comprised of two spacious, light rooms that allow babies to freely explore and experience through their senses, sounds, textures, visual images and the use of their bodies to enhance all forms of development. Schedules are specific to the individual babies.

Babies, escorted by the teachers, visit residents often – clearly one of our most popular activities! Residents of the Mount are always welcome to visit and can be seen often in the baby room.

Adult to child ratio is 1:4. This group of 12 toddlers has ample opportunities to use emerging physical abilities like climbing, running, using manipulative skills, emptying out bags and purses, painting with sponges, playing with dolls and household items, looking at books, and splashing in water.

Young toddlers go on friendly visits throughout the Mount while riding in a large red wagon pulled by their teachers.

14 children with three full-time staff members. Located between nursing center neighborhoods, this classroom gives 2 year-old toddlers the opportunity to be very close to residents. This is a truly shared space between residents and children. Residents use this room for special activities as well as visiting toddlers.

14 children with three full-time staff members. The transition year from toddlerhood to childhood is full of opportunity to learn about oneself. Our children gain in their abilities to do things on their own, investigating a rich environment for their imaginations, cognitive abilities and physical development. They have both structured and unstructured time with residents. The older toddlers may have sing-a long-time, craft activities and friendly visits accompanied by their teachers as they go throughout the building.

Adult to child ratio is 1:7. Our two preschool rooms are large and spacious for groups averaging 20 children. Each group has regular activities with residents allowing everyone involved to enjoy time together, learn new skills, take part in interesting activities. They may do cooking, crafts, singing and art throughout the year. The children and residents also take part in a structured art studio and music activities, both led by specialists.

The children also go on field trips throughout the year. The curriculum flows from the needs and interests of children, teachers, families and others and is in accordance with the children’s developmental needs.

Each area has its own professional staff with the goal of facilitating relationships among the many generations who live, work, and are cared for at Providence Mount St. Vincent.

The Intergenerational Learning Center participates in The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) which is a
federal program that provides reimbursements for nutritious meals and snacks to participating child care centers. We
are required to adhere to the CACFP regulations for types and amounts of food served as well as maintaining accurate
records.

In accordance with federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and

The High Cost of Child Care in Washington State

Child care costs in Washington rose alongside the national average since the pandemic started. The state’s costs swelled 55%, making Washington child care costs almost unmanageable for families across the state. Across the state, 550,000 children don’t have access to child care. Despite over 60% of children living in homes where both parents work, many children are left out of child care because of lack of access.

What is the Average Child Care Cost in Washington?

State average costs have risen from $11,774 per child per year to $18,237 per year per child after COVID-19. The costs have led to a rise in Washington child care assistance, including applications for Working Connection Child Care (WCCC). The cost for child care in Washington, by age group, averaged the following pre-pandemic:

• Infant Care: Infant child care costs in Washington are the highest averaging $233 per week.
• 4-Year-Old Care: The cost for child care for a four-year-old averages $178 a week.
• School-Age Care: A school-age child will cost about $105 each week in child care.

The figures above are for pre-pandemic costs. If you adjust the costs for the 55% increase, the prices rise to $361 per week for an infant, $275 for a four-year-old and $162 for a school-age child. Costs fluctuate depending on the city, so let’s take a look at Washington’s major cities and what you can expect to pay for child care.

What is the Average Child Care Cost in Washington’s Major Cities?

Child care costs can also vary from city to city. The bigger the city, the higher the price (in most cases). So, what can parents expect to pay for child care in Washington’s biggest cities?

Seattle Child Care

Child care is costly in Seattle, where parents often have to sit on waiting lists for daycares and preschools. For many facilities, the price starts at around $800. Most parents will pay more than $1,000 for care.

Spokane Child Care

For a toddler, the average cost of child care in Spokane is about $700 per month, or around $8,600 per year. Infant care will cost approximately $10,000 per year, and preschooler care is about $7,800 each year.

Tacoma Child Care

In Tacoma, parents can expect to spend at least $600 per month on child care. Many daycare centers charge $200+ per week.

Vancouver Child Care

Vancouver’s child care costs are a little more affordable compared to other major cities. Costs average about $800-$850 per month.

Bellevue Child Care

In Bellevue, child care costs can range from $1,300 to $2,200+ Prices can vary greatly from one daycare center or preschool to the next.

How Does Washington State’s Child Care Costs Rank?

Washington ranks among the bottom 10 states across the board for the least affordable state for child care costs. According to Child Care Aware of Washington, the state’s rankings are as follows:

• 5th least affordable for toddlers
• 7th least affordable for a four-year-old
• 10th least affordable for care at a center

Other Costs to Consider

There’s no question that the cost of child care in Washington is astronomical. But that’s not the only cost you have to consider. Remember that the averages listed above are strictly for the care itself. Other costs can include:

Driving Back and Forth

Transporting your child to and from daycare will cost you time and money. In addition to the cost of gas, you have to consider vehicle maintenance and repairs. If the daycare or preschool is a fair distance from your home, daily trips can add significant wear and tear to your vehicle.

Formula or Snacks

Child care providers are required to feed the children in their care, but you may need to provide formula. If you have snacks or other foods that you would prefer your child to eat, then you will need to provide these as well.

Deposits or Annual Fees

Some child care facilities and preschools require deposits or annual fees that add to the overall cost of care. These fees are in addition to the regular monthly or weekly fees that they charge.

Child care cost in Washington is high, and low-income families can apply for programs, such as WCCC, to help cover some of the cost involved. Reducing costs requires a strategic approach, which involves shopping around for the lowest cost option.

If you have multiple children, many facilities will offer additional child discounts, making it more beneficial to place all of your children in the same center.

In the US, the idea of ​​uniting a kindergarten and a nursing home under one roof has become a popular and successful project.

In Seattle, part of a beautiful building, where the elderly have been living for many years, was allocated for a kindergarten. Parents bring their kids there in the morning and take them home in the evening. Moreover, everyone is happy: children, their mothers and the elderly, whose life, thanks to communication with the kids, sparkled with new colors.

Children spend several hours every day with the elderly. Immediately after breakfast, the kids go to their classes in an organized manner: together they draw, engage in creativity, sing, communicate, and have lunch. And after lunch, the kids go for a walk to their playground.

Such communication, as Americans admit, benefits everyone. The elderly can teach the younger generation a lot. They have the patience, experience, time and desire to do it. And the kids charge their grandparents with their positive and energy, do not let them feel lonely. Moreover, thanks to the kindergarten and the opportunity to teach children, the elderly again felt their demand in society.

“I saw with my own eyes how drooping old people cheered up, a smile appeared on their faces as soon as the children ran into their wing of the building in the morning,” TV journalist Evan Briggs, who was the first to talk about the house where children and old people live, shares his impressions. allowed me to see with different eyes how different generations, separated by the abyss of years, became one.”

In the US, they have come up with another positive pastime for the elderly. The Creature Teachers company brings exotic animals to nursing homes: turtles, raccoons, foxes, rare birds. Over the past 4 years, the company’s employees have already visited 90 homes and received many letters and words of gratitude. The oldest person they met was a 107 year old lady. She was completely delighted when she was able to stroke the raccoon and tickle the turtle under the chin.
