Pentaschool students took part in the “(in) Place” project and developed interior design for schools in Kaluga and Vyksa. Let’s tell how it was.

“(in) the Place” is a new project whose participants renovate interiors in regional schools. Designers, teachers and children together change the school space, come up with interesting ideas, and carry out repairs. nine0003

Pentaschool also joined the project this year. Interior design students Olga Artamonova and Amalia Shakhmuradyan developed design projects for schools in the Nizhny Novgorod and Kaluga regions. About what tasks the students faced, why they decided to take part and what results they were able to achieve, read in the material.

About the project “(in) the Place”

The project “(in) the Place” is implemented by the New Teacher Charitable Foundation. Another program of the foundation is “A Teacher for Russia”: according to it, teachers leave for two years to work in the regions, where they actively participate in the renovation of schools and carry out initiatives. nine0003

The idea of ​​creating a program that will help solve the problem of the poor condition of school premises came from the participants of the Teacher for Russia project. Polina Uspehova, a graduate of Teacher for Russia, became the leader of “(in) the Place”. We talked to Polina about what motivated her to create the “(in) Place” project.

Please tell us how you came up with this idea?

— I worked in the Teacher for Russia project, I had many teacher colleagues who left to work in the regions. Unfortunately, regional schools have a common problem – the premises are not in the best condition, and the budget allocated for repairs is too small. If funds are still found, then children cannot become the initiators of any changes in their classes. And it turns out that the repair is carried out without taking into account what the students want and what they really need. nine0003

We started thinking about what we could do about it. This is how the “(in) Place” project was born – together with the children we become the initiators of changes in school premises, and teachers and administration are ready to help us.

How do children feel about the project idea? Are they interested in participating in the renovation of school premises?

— Children often do not believe that they can really change something. Sometimes they do not even imagine what school interiors can be like. Showing children that school premises can be different, that you can show your imagination in the interior, find a non-standard approach – this is a separate work that we carry out. nine0003

Many children want to have areas for themselves where they can sit and read. On the one hand, these are zones for solitude, on the other hand, a place for communication and games. It happens that children just want to have a normal bathroom at school. Or the wardrobe is very uncomfortable, but at the same time it is the only place for “hanging out”.

The main request from teachers is to change classrooms, and from students – to change the common space, although they are also actively involved in the work if we develop a project for their class. nine0003

How do teachers feel about your initiatives?

— Within the framework of the project, I mainly interact with teachers from Teachers for Russia, we have quite similar views on school interiors. We believe that this space should be modifiable – for example, an office should be made in such a way that it can quickly and easily move tables for different tasks.

What were the challenges faced by Pentaschool students?

All students of interior design courses at Pentaschool could join the project. But it was necessary to soberly assess their strengths, since the participants had to:

  • develop a design project according to the brief. To do this, you need to be well versed in all stages of interior design, understand how to make the space aesthetic, functional and comfortable at the same time;
  • fully package the project: create a mood board, a measurement plan, a furniture layout plan, a material map, a wall sweep, a concept board;
  • make an estimate. The school does not have the opportunity to allocate a large amount for repairs, so it is necessary to meet the minimum budget; nine0046
  • have time to finish the project by the deadline. There were clear deadlines, and they had to be observed.

Two trainees, Olga Artamonova and Amalia Shakhmuradyan, started working on the projects. They are just starting out in design and have no experience with public interiors.

Olga: I took part in the project because I was interested in designing a public space. I think it helps in professional development. I also wanted to try to develop an interior in which children would feel comfortable, it would be interesting for them to be in this space. It is very important to form good taste in children from an early age. nine0003

Amalia: Existence determines consciousness — if the school is neat, modern, comfortable, children will strive to go there. It is more pleasant to make friends there, discuss the latest news, take selfies for social networks. And that means it’s easier to learn.

Being in a comfortable environment, you feel safe, you trust teachers and the knowledge gained more. The desire to create such an environment in the school is the main reason for my participation in the project.

Olga was to develop a project for a recreation area at a school in the Nizhny Novgorod region, and Amalia was in charge of a dressing room at a school in Kaluga. Amalia Shakhmuradyan

Amalia: I was renovating the dressing room and entrance area at a school in Kaluga. It was necessary to organize the storage of outerwear, places for changing shoes, places for waiting for parents, storage of inventory. The children chose the loft style or something close to this style within the budget. I think it’s a good choice. Loft is a modern and durable style. For it, you can pick up inexpensive materials, order metal and wood products from local craftsmen. The budget was quite small (especially for modern conditions), so the design project is as simple as possible to implement. nine0003

I hope that the proposed ideas will be implemented and eventually cover the rest of the school premises.

Olga: I presented the design project of the recreation area of ​​school No. 6 in Vyksa. The main task was to create an atmosphere of comfort within a small budget – a comfortable, modern, interesting and aesthetic space in an eco-style. It is dominated by natural eco-friendly materials, which is very important, especially for children. nine0058

It was necessary to design the most functional room. Calm, neutral shades of gray and cream perfectly balanced the bright accent yellow in the interior. Furniture and functional decor are mostly made of wood. Also in the interior there are two slates on the walls and a magnetic marker board, on which you can draw with chalk or markers, attach some announcements. The interior has small tables, soft couches where you can relax comfortably. The concrete structure from one step was transformed into a wooden structure of two steps with carpet inserts (this creates additional seating). A bookcrossing zone has appeared, where students can exchange interesting books and read them during breaks. nine0058

Both listeners successfully coped with the task. The projects have been approved, and preparations are underway for repairs. At the school in Vyksa, renovation of the interior is planned for the autumn holidays, and the timing of the renovation at the Kaluga school will be known after the new director takes office.

How will the project develop further?

Now “(in) the Place” is actively developing: new schools are connected, work is underway with teachers and schoolchildren. In 2022, it is planned to implement 12 design projects. nine0003

Polina Uspehkova, Project Manager: This summer we tried different things – we gave lectures for teachers and explained how to make the school space more comfortable with a minimal budget. We worked out an elective in a camp for children from a temporary accommodation center – we changed the space with students in grades 1-4. Now we have plans to develop the program for the next year, to work more offline with the guys so that they try to draw and make furniture.

We plan to find permanent partners who will travel with us to the children, to do something with their hands. We are also looking for partners who will help with the materials. We want to assemble a big cool team inspired by our idea. nine0003
