He went to the elementary Fairfax campus, a smaller campus with spacious classrooms, and he has loved the bigger Selma campus too. The leadership works hard to create an accessible and friendly atmosphere for the students and parents so there is a strong sense of community. The admin is collaborative and value parent input. The teachers are nurturing and attentive and know when to give students more help or more of a challenge. There are many enrichment classes (art, music, gardening, sports teams, band), a social-emotional curriculum and clubs. Most kids eat the (optional) lunch prepared in the Fairfax kitchen and is SO good. At Selma, our child has delved deeper into academics and developed new interests like government and digital media in clubs.    Parent: My oldest transferred here in 3rd grade right before the pandemic hit – we left UCLA Lab School and have really loved the teachers, staff and leadership of the school. The SEL curriculum and Cool Tools reminds me a lot of UCLA Lab’s approach -but without the tuition. Last year my other son started kindergarten. He’s young for his grade so we decided to repeat kinder and got full support of the faculty and staff to do this – they really listened to us and allowed us to lead what we knew was best for our child.
   The Faculty is also very diverse which was important to us – we were looking for a school with strong BIPOC leadership and CWC is exactly that – amazing folks for my kids to look up to and aspire to be like – that look like them. One thing I wish there were more of, is the arts – but we are working on it – it’s a community with so much room to create and imagine a future.    Senior: As a current student who has attended Lake Balboa College Prep since 6th grade, I can say that this school is different from a typical high school. Starting off, the school starts from kindergarten and follows up to twelfth grade. I’ve attended this school since middle school, and now graduating from here next year. Lake Balboa has provided me with great opportunities. They offer college courses, Ap classes, clubs, and sports! Sure it’s a small school, therefore everyone knows each other which I love because it makes us feel like family. The community itself is welcoming and the staff is friendly. Teachers definitely care about their students and are in communication with their parents. Overall, some may argue that this school doesn’t offer much, but I disagree as I feel like this school has prepared me well enough to move on to the next chapter of my life which is college…. She was engaging and motivated the kids as if they were in class. The children were able to attend school during the last few weeks and they interacted with each other as if they’d been physically together the entire time. It’s a testament to the great job the school did during distance learning. He’s now attending in-person first grade and is thriving. He’s able to read, his writing and math are at grade level and his social skills are on point. All of this is due in great part to the dedication of the teacher at CWC Hollywood. The best endorsement of the school comes from my son who is always excited about going to school and loves his friends, teachers and administrators. 22. Works Here: I’ve been working at GEA for over a year, and it is easily one of the best schools I have ever been a part of. The staff are unbelievably talented educators, the parents are wonderfully involved and supportive, and the students are incredibly well behaved. While somethings are inescapable in a charter school (lower pay than public, healthcare, etc.), I couldn’t be happier with my choice of employment.     Parent: We have been at West Hollywood for 5 years and couldn’t be happier with the choice we made. Not only is it a rigorous academic curriculum, but it is a nice community school that has a very caring teaching staff that has provided a great well rounded education so far across the various subjects. There are a lot of extracurricular activities due to the active parent involvement that otherwise wouldn’t exist like theater, chorus, coding club, a library, PE, etc. Being in a diverse environment like West Hollywood really shapes and prepares the kids for the real word. Mentor Language Institute is located in the heart of Hollywood. Our campus is located on the famous Hollywood Boulevard! There are many interesting things to see in our area. Not far from our school is the Hollywood Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theater (where movie premieres are held), Dolby Theater (where the Oscars are held), Hollywood Wax Museum (where you can see your favorite celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Jackson) , the El Capitan Theater (where most Disney movie premieres take place), and many other museums, landmarks, and other attractions dedicated to Los Angeles’ entertainment heritage.
Within walking distance of our campus is the giant entertainment complex Hollywood & Highland with over 70 stores, over 25 restaurants and great nightlife including bowling, an arcade and a nightclub. We are also very close to the Hollywood/Highland subway station from where you can take a direct train to places like DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) and Universal Studios. I had never interacted with Asian Americans before, and all I heard about them from the Western media was that Asian guys have historically faced harassment based on Western notions of masculinity, which significantly influenced their success in their personal lives in America. Indeed, most of the Asian girls I knew in Los Angeles dated white guys, arguing that dating an Asian is like building a relationship with a brother. I was categorically not satisfied with such a label of “sister”, and in general this logic was not clear, because I always liked Asian guys. nine0005
