LASC Language Scholastics

Our job as ESL educators goes far beyond simply teaching English. Its one thing to teach a student English, but it is a completely different thing to teach them the experience of English. With a forward-thinking attitude, we are constantly striving to be at the forefront of the latest technology and learning methodologies in the industry. Our curriculum is structured on a blended learning model, one that is heavily e-based and fully corpora informed. In so doing, we are able to flip our classrooms, allowing our students to dictate their own education and interact with the language as they learn it. We strongly believe in providing an authentic education, one that simulates English in action, as it exists today. It is our goal as an institution to ensure that, upon completing our program, our students have reached levels of proficiency that meet or exceed CERF standards. More importantly, however, it is our goal to endow them with capability to practically apply those skills in pursuit of futures, whatever they may be. nine0005

ONLINE-ZINE. 2 release. Sweet taste of love

Come on! It’s so cool! How did you say? North Asia? Tell it to my friend!”

he looked at Alex. I went up to him and repeated the same thing as if in a geography lesson: “I am from Northern Asia. It’s in Siberia.” After that, we struck up a conversation, and I remember that at first it was quite difficult for me to understand his American English. It was very fast and modern: formed on the west coast, full of slang and abbreviated phrases. From the way he spoke, I immediately realized that he was younger than me, but it would be stupid to refuse to communicate with the only Asian guys at the party – I wanted to know more about them. I had never interacted with Asian Americans before, and all I heard about them from the Western media was that Asian guys have historically faced harassment based on Western notions of masculinity, which significantly influenced their success in their personal lives in America. Indeed, most of the Asian girls I knew in Los Angeles dated white guys, arguing that dating an Asian is like building a relationship with a brother. I was categorically not satisfied with such a label of “sister”, and in general this logic was not clear, because I always liked Asian guys. nine0005

Fortunately, these were all statistics covering people of my generation, children of the 90s, while Alex belonged to the generation of zero and his experience was free from similar American stereotypes already experienced. Also, his generation had not yet been so thoroughly analyzed in terms of cultural studies, and for me this was a kind of beautiful systemic error that I was very curious to understand. I didn’t know what to expect from Alex and that’s why everything about him seemed so amazing and new to me. The first thing I noticed was that he was very tactile, which was not very typical for people of Asian culture. In Asian families, it is not customary to show their feelings, let alone hug and stroke their children. And although my parents loved me madly, they rarely showed their tenderness, which is why, in adulthood, excessive tactility on the part of new people embarrassed me. Alex immediately began to make attempts to hug me, touch my hair, touch my jewelry. “What self-confident!” I thought. But something about Alex’s charisma and the way he looked at me made me stick around with him at the party. He asked me a lot of questions, as if he knew that I liked being listened to. I remember that I couldn’t stop, it was as if it had burst through me and I continued to talk endlessly about my academic interests, my big dream to go to graduate school in America, about where I grew up, about education in Korea and, of course, about Asian America, which resonated so well with me. nine0005

Alex was a great listener. I immediately noticed that for some reason it was with him that I immediately felt accepted, understood and absolutely “my own”. It was nice to finally feel the ease in communicating with the guy. It seemed to me that earlier in Russia I was always perceived as someone “foreign”. With Alex, there was a feeling that I no longer have roles, and I can be myself, because he sees in me not just an Asian, a Russian, an exotic body or an immigrant. Next to him, I felt free from all sorts of clichés. And this feeling was insanely attractive. Feeling free from stereotypes was my weak point. No matter how much I worked on myself and studied the problems of cultural identity, the outside world and society often returned me to the former dark jungle of internal racism. The opportunity to be myself and be heard, to see someone who is not at all like me, but still somehow painfully reminiscent of me, was so exciting in a new way. Perhaps this is what made me so attached to Alex from the very beginning. The feeling that someone who seemed to exist in a parallel reality all this time and finally found me settled in my heart that night. nine0005

We didn’t meet again until a month later, and I still remember our first conversation in his car.

– I hate living among white people, Alex said as he plotted a route to West Hollywood, where he then lived with his mother.

– Me too, Alex. I love the Korean area – I quickly agreed, not trying to hide my interest in this topic.

– Koreatown is my area, I grew up there. I plan to move there as soon as possible – he muttered.

– I want to move there too. I’m so tired of living among Russians and Armenians. I always felt that Koreatown is my place. nine0005

– So, it turns out that you are not Russian? So you don’t feel like that?

– Me? I have a Russian passport, but as you can see, I’m Asian. – I showed on my face and laughed nervously, not finding other arguments.

– I moved from Russia because of racism, it was not comfortable for me to exist where my problems are not considered important.
