    One of the Boroughs of New York . Staten Island is the third largest borough in New York, with an area of ​​151 sq. km. however, the least populated – the number of resident population living on Staten Island is only 471 thousand people, this is due to its considerable remoteness from the rest of the city.

    Staten Island is the area of ​​New York closest to the neighboring state of New Jersey – New Jersey, it became part of New York in 1898.

    The northern part of the island – the part that is oriented towards Manhattan – is the most urbanized.

    For a long time Staten Island was New York’s dumping ground. However, after the construction in 1964 of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge – which connected Brooklyn and Staten Island and is today one of the world’s largest suspension bridges with a main span – 1298 meters, the territory of the island was subjected to reclamation and began to be actively developed and urbanized.

    Due to its small population, Staten Island is completely different from the rest of the boroughs of New York.
