RUSSIAN CHILDREN’S SCHOOL, AUSTIN – Our Texas – Russian Newspaper in Houston, Dallas, San-Antonio, Austin, Texas

“A teacher must be an artist, an artist passionately in love with his work,” wrote Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. And if you think there are no such professionals, you need to visit Austin Sunday School, which has been running for almost 15 years.

Two years ago we already wrote about her successes. During this time, a lot has changed in the educational institution and, of course, for the better. nine0003

The number of students is growing, there are already more than a hundred, new subjects have been added, the teaching staff has expanded, and it is time to move to a new house.

The modern layout of the Austin International School building, with a large auditorium surrounded by sunny classrooms, helped in a new approach to the organization of the educational process. All teachers of the school – experienced teachers with professional education – are sure that in order to educate a child living in a bilingual environment, it is necessary to develop his creative imagination, initiative and fantasy, and most importantly, to introduce him to Russian culture. “Our task is to create a basis for the practical use of the language with a clear assimilation of its elementary grammatical and lexical norms. We also draw attention to the importance of teaching disciplines that develop the child’s creative abilities,” says school teacher Irina Ryzhkova, who graduated from the Pedagogical Institute in Orenburg, and then she taught Russian in Russia and in America. nine0003

Kids 3-4 years old get acquainted with the Russian alphabet, of course, in a playful way, attend music lessons and go to classes with the telling name “Merry Fitness”.

At the Russian language lessons in high school, a lot of attention is paid to work on the spelling of parts of speech, phonetic analysis of words, word analysis by composition, analysis of various texts. We write essays, presentations and dictations. Much attention is paid to working on mistakes, so the guys have 2 Russian language notebooks: in one they work in the classroom, and the notebook with homework must be handed over to the teacher for verification. nine0003

Pupils, whose age range at school is from 3 to 13 years old, can attend several subjects at once: Russian, mathematics, reading, etc. For young children, lessons last 30 minutes, for schoolchildren of older groups – 45 minutes. Of course, parents can only take their children to one Russian lesson per week. But who can refuse such exciting activities as the dances of the peoples of the world, chess, ballet, drawing or theatrical skills? These items are very popular. In addition, a new subject has been introduced at the school – Ukrainian language lessons. “We have many parents from Ukraine who speak Russian and Ukrainian and want their children to have this opportunity too,” says Irina. nine0003

“The positive creative environment that has developed at the school stimulates the relationship between teachers and parents. We strongly encourage the involvement of parents in the educational process, when they bring their knowledge and skills to children. For example, parents can learn a poem with a child and speak at a holiday: the child sees how mom and dad are trying, and perceives the interest of the parents as their own, is fond of the creative task that has become an activity for the whole family, ”explains Irina. Parents also support in many other ways: they bring textbooks from Russia, help conduct classes in a theater studio, and prepare holidays for children. nine0003

School staff appreciate this help and give parents their due: so that moms and dads do not get bored while the children are studying, now classes for parents are also held at the Austin Russian School. The day off of fathers and mothers is not wasted in agonizing expectation: for, one might say, a symbolic fee of $ 5, parents attend painting classes or go in for sports (zumba, strength training). . Various excursions, joint holidays, even a T-shirt coloring contest – it seems that there is no time for a child to be bored at this school! In this friendly community, where there is an atmosphere of mutual understanding and support, new students and their parents are always welcome. nine0003
